    • Depends on the location. Where I'm at any damages/theft of $1000+ is a 3rd degree felony. Anything under that is a petite larceny misdemeanor. But since it's not a "violent" crime, and the jails are packed as it is nothing much will come out of it. Probably just a fine and probation. Used to be $250 bucks or more is a felony. But now crime is out of control these days. The justice system can't keep up with all the thievery.

  • Dude, it looks like it's been abandoned for decades. You don't want your stuff stolen you have to take ownership of it and your property. Not saying it's right but if a place looks abandoned and people are able to just get in there unnoticed for what looks like years and years... I mean don't be surprised when things like this happen. Clean the place up, organize your stuff ("I didn't even know I left this here" and "I haven't been here in years") and make it look like someone actually cares about it and you'll mitigate this issue.

  • Very similar theft happended to me 2.5 years ago. I caught the guy red handed. He broke into my shop and lifted thousands of dollars worth of tools, parts, keepsakes, et al. The cops only charged him with "receiving stolen property",,, no charges for breaking & entering, trespassing, theft, etc. He was arrested but his grandmother posted bail within 8 hours. The DA took the case and it is currently pending grand jury trial. I suspect I'll never see restitution or justice. Meanwhile, the thief and his criminal enablers and family continue to trespass and flaunt their crimes. They went as far as to play the victim card because I reported the theft to the cops. My faith in this particular police force is nil; totally ineffective at best, possibly corrupt themselves. Good luck with pursuit of justice.

  • Feel your heartbreak and frustration. No excuse for stealing, even if he thought it was scrap (which he obviously did) . BUT, we live in 2024 and the world is not what it use to be. You must secure properly anything of value in a locked shed etc. Hard lesson to learn, but now is the time to go through all your junk yards etc., remove and securely store anything of value to you and scrap the rest. Huge job, but if you don't do it, somebody else will or it will rust away to nothing anyway. Again, not defending the thieves in any way, and I totally understand how you feel. Had my business broken into and cleaned out 3 times in 2 weeks many years ago. Heartbreaking and sent me to the wall. Do it now.

Reading through the comments, I was amazed to see how many people tried to justify the thief's actions based on the fact that the area "looked abandoned". No matter what it looks like, if stuff is on land you do not own, it is not free for the taking! A person would have to locate the property owner and get permission from them. Anything less than that is stealing, pure and simple. I wish I had something to say that would make you feel better, but I've been there too and know there is'nt any...

    • Add in the vandalized windows and grilles you can no longer buy new along with the value of those transmissions and the price goes up. There is an agricultural institute in my area that owns most of the land up in the flat-rock with a 100+ year old cabin on it they used for teaching students in the past. About 7 or 8 years ago someone smashed the picture window out of it to steal a desk that wasn't worth anything. The glass they smashed to steal the desk was worth far more money than the junk they were trying to steal. Morons like that are why we're slowly losing places to ride atv's and dirt bikes in my area.

Obviously it's so overgrown that you don't even know what you have out there. It's just a bit hard to feel sorry for ya on that one. Guy got away with a few hundred bucks worth of scrap if he's lucky, and I'm guessing that's how the courts will treat it.

    • If it doesn’t belong to you keep your fukkin hands off of it! The fact that there are cars on the on kept, overgrown, property shouldn’t give the person a clue that it belongs to somebody and he should be there. • Go back a couple of decades and there was no place the majority of people could comment on such things. Hear me out on why people always sucked, lol. My elderly mother says similar things about drugs, violence etc. because of what she hears on the "news" today. I know we're not talking about the cities, but certain news likes to push how bad they apparently are today, however they don't hold a candle to the heroin crisis and violence of the early-mid 70's. As for the country, it was the "wild west" and arguably more disturbing, and you know what I mean. I grew up hearing stories from family of the horrible things that happened to people "whose kind simply wasn't welcome". I guess who cares when you could get away with anything before fingerprints, right? I'm only in my late 30's and as a kid I had TV with foil covered rabbit ears (like 3 channels). News was very local, the world was tiny. Anyway as we age we all inevitably say - "Shows you the direction this world's in" Sorry about the rant.
