Here we look at how opponents reacted before and after fighting Mexico’s pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez.
Tonight we see him in action against Avni Yildirim, a showdown which many see as a preparation bout for Billy Joe Saunders. A slick southpaw who represents the latest and greatest of Eddie Hearn’s middleweight challengers.

  • When I see Canelo fight, I think of Mike Tyson in his prime:"they all have a plan, until they're in the ring". The best thing that happened to him was his loss to Floyd and facing Lara and GGG. If you can take a loss and learn from it, if you face a defensive master like Lara and edge him and if you can take a punch from GGG (yes, the last two are controversial wins) you can pretty much face anyone. He learned from Floyd to adjust to a fighter and Canelo has always been patient. His IQ in the ring matured and his own defense is better. He uses the uppercut and double hooks masterfully and is a great body and counter puncher. He loves to inflict pain which is why the only guy that hits with that mean streak like him is GGG. Only guys like Hagler, Leonard, a prime Roy Jones and Carlos Monzon would be the guys I would've put in the ring with him. You are witnessing the P4P King of this era until someone better comes along.

From his natural walking weight of 175-ish (at the time) all the way down to 151 in the span of a week (for the weigh-in) is every nutritionists and health doctor's worst nightmare. That bangs up your body on so many levels. In conclusion? Floyd drained a kid down to his limit for a tactical advantage. It's smart, but damn hell underhanded and dirty.

He could have had a much better chance of beating Jr had he attacked him more than try to out box him. No one out boxes Jr. Jose Luis Castillo showed tye world how to beat Jr but all of them after obviously didn't pay attention to that fight.

  • I remember where I was back during Canelo vs Cotto. A couple of Mexican friends and I were hanging out with some Puerto Rican friends who bought the fight and invited us over to watch it. Now, let me make it clear that everything was in good fun. Yes, we were Mexico vs Puerto Rico, and, yes, we were all rooting for our respective guy to win and dissing the other fighter, but we were all respectful to each other, and there was no ill will to anyone. In the beginning, the Puerto Rican friends started out loud and boisterous with one guy saying Cotto would dominate and could defeat Mayweather now that he had Roach with him (I guess he really bought what Cotto said). As the fight progressed and Canelo took over, the Mexican crowd grew very happy while Puerto Rican guys really got silent. I mean, they went from 100 to 0, and the looks on their faces was nothing but despair. Heck, one guy was even crying. After Canelo was announced as the winner, the Mexicans thought about going out to celebrate and invited the Puerto Ricans over, but they all just looked so depressed. They all just went home right after the fight, and the host even just locked himself in his room. It was quite the night.

That's why it's good to stay humble and polite before and after a fight and let your fists and technique do the talking for you That being said you can see how the success' changed Alvarez's usual quiet/polite pre fight attitude to being a little bit cockier than in is early days before gaining titles and notoriety
