A funny fact it's that most of the players and some new ones were on another matches a few times and the results were very close to what happened on that final.
Was in France during that whole WC. Anyone who remembers Brazil semis' performance vs the Netherlands would tell you that they were the huge favorites to win it all. So yes, there was something akwardly undescribable in how the Brazilian players moved on the pitch. They were all literally like "holding back" like a boxer does in a fixed fight. I had never seen this in my life...even in Serie A alledgedly "rigged" matches.

As someone who has epilepsy, if I had to play the most important football match of my career just 2 hours before kick off, and then I had a seizure, I would have volunteered to be left out of the starting 11, or the team advisors would go around a way to get me on the bench, just to give me enough time to recover. The mistake was putting Ronaldo back on the starting 11 rather than allowing him time to prepare. Having seizures at least twice a month is something I find unbearable to deal with, because it prevents me from going abroad without documentation proving I require medication for travel, some which are banned from being taken despite being prescribed from your chemist. I had another seizure 2 days ago and I don't remember sleeping on the stairs and waking up with blood on my shirt, or leaving my glasses and phone on my desk. I'd wake up confused and not concentrated for the big match. Ronaldo didn't feel up for it prior to kick off, and the mood in the Brazil dressing room wasn't filling with confidence after 2 goals conceded before half time, and anyone who went through what he did would feel the same, especially since he was the best player in the world at the time and it was his big moment. At least he got his revenge 4 years later.

Brazilian here, I still remember that World Cup. Here is what I know, and what I think: Theory #1: No, lol. Mario Zagallo personally told he chose to start the match with Ronaldo. "How would I leave the best player in the world out of a World Cup final?" said he in an interview. Doctor said he was good to play, no one thought he wouldn't be in full focus, apparently. Theory #2: Also no. Brazil was a pretty messed up team in 98. Absolutely zero tactics both in offense and defense. This team lost to Norway at group stage and barely beat Denmark and Netherlands (PK). They were lucky Ronaldo and Rivaldo were on fire, pretty much winning matches on their on. The weird thing is that even after the game against Argentina, FIFA officials said nothing of him being positive. To add to that, if Argentina had lost against Peru, there was a high chance of Argentina not making it into the 2018 World Cup. Peru had not lost one game since 2016 and was winning its last matches. Even during the game, there were controversial offside calls that never were offside. It was only after Peru qualified and Chile starting looking for a way of getting both Colombia and Peru disqualified that investigations started and FIFA officially came out to say that Guerrero had tested positive. This ended up with Guerrero serving a 6 month suspension, being the main striker that Peru uses so that even if he did make it into the World Cup, he would make it with very little play time. Is it a coincidence that Peru ended up in a group with France? or another coincidence that they could have faced Argentina if they advanced from their group?

So they went to pitch with all these things in their minds. They were not focused in the game as they should. And the squad was one man down, since R9 clearly couldn't have a good performance after all that. So Brazil lost.

Andy Walker, correct. I wouldn't go as far to say they stumbled to the Final. Their path wasn't smooth. They were the most solid unit defensively and each member of the squad played their part and stepped up when it mattered (sort of like Italy in 2006, Spain in 2010 and Germany in 2014). I have noticed that the team with the most solid defence usually wins the World Cup. Surely, Brazil, Holland and Argentina were much better attacking teams in 1998.
