It's strange how tree climbing is generally considered to be socially unacceptable once you reach the age of puberty, but rock climbing is considered a perfectly acceptable sport at any age.

@@pixelPantsuu Socially unacceptable, yes. As an adult, if you tell someone you're spending the afternoon rock climbing, it will barely raise an eyebrow; but tell them that you're going to climb trees and they'll think you've gone mental.
@@simontuffen8243 I don't think you know what the general public thinks of rock climbing. They won't raise an eyebrow if you tell them you're gym climbing but most people still associate outdoor climbing with a life or death sport and think you're insane. Hell I've even met gym climbers that think outdoor is insane.

@@AntonAdelson We're not meant to climb trees. Our legs are longer than our arms. It's counter intuitive. We're meant to to walk and run long distances. It's why we can up perfectly vertical with straight posture. It burns very little energy. Our anatomy is as perfect for the ground as the ape is for the trees.
@@rabbithole8592 While we are better suited to the ground we're still able to do the the same things as well or sometime even better than other animals and that's because the human body is able to adapt to just about everything and there's plenty of proof in the Book Of World Records to back these claims.

Except for walking up straight on two feet and running long distances. We're nowhere as fast as a cheetah. We're nowhere near as agile or strong as Apes. We can swim but nowhere near as well as Fish. And we definitely can't fly ! Without the aid of Airplanes/Jets/Helicopters. But we're talking about the Human Body. World Records are Human vs Human. Not Human vs Apes. Are you a Child!? lol

For people watching and wanting or thinking of doing the same, please do your research on tree physiology, signs and symptoms to look for in weakened, damaged or diseased trees or specific limbs on a tree. It is not about blind trust that the tree will not break, there are characteristic attributes which factor in. Tree species and time of year for example. I've worked in trees for a few years now and have climbed close to a thousand trees, I've had branches fail on me that I would never have even guessed due to internal wood inclusion that I have not spotted, In rope and harness luckily for me. However in beech trees (fagus) I will trust even standing on a 1&1/2 inch diameter branch (standing on the branch bark collar, ie - close to the main trunk) they're great trees for free climbing. I love Tarzan and Magnus but i feel Tarzan fails to properly articulate the dangers to look for in trees. Please be careful so you can keep creating content and living a long prosperous life :) -From a British Arborist
I must add. No critique to Tarzen, he's obviously a very competent and capable person, I just feel the risk management shouldn't just be "don't think about it" to a wider audience. It evidently works for him thus far.
As a fellow brit I agree, and oak trees being one of the worst trees for diseased and rotten branches.

Very good! I used to suck at pull-ups. Nowadays I train by doing 1 full motion pull up every minute for as long as I can. You can even add in 2 push ups to the minute to make it more active

You made me remember back when I had trouble doing a single pull-up. Today I can do several muscle-ups. You won't progress every day or week but when you do progress it feels great and pull-ups is a really nice exercise to do because you can progress both by becoming stronger and by losing fat.
You can see Magnus' increased comfort when he can use his upper body. Incredible work by both of you!

Nah, that jump across the branches near the end was one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen someone do, this guy is almost Honnold levels of wired differently. Amazing display of Magnus' confidence in his climbing skill too to do this stuff without prior direct experience.
Doing parkour and free soloing are very similar disciplines mentally. As someone who's been doing parkour for 14 years, I always say that Alex Honnold is a legitimate traceur and no one can convince me otherwise! XD
I suggest you watch Leo’s last video then, where he climbs a 60m tree in the Sumatra Jungle while bleeding from the feet after being eaten by leeches. He even meets a wild orang-outan family. He is crazy and incredible.
He mapped it out years ago and practised on the route don’t be fooled
The jump part was what most separates him from a rock climber: the confidence, mental focus, space awareness and rough foot skin needed for the task at that height with no safety gear is truly elite
Leo is obviously very talented and Maverick. But this collaboration is awesome: to see someone with Magnus's level struggle and bravely confront height and danger, see his skills challenged by fear and unusual environment is so inspiring.

Yes, especially after the Alex Honnold video. That was crazy and took huge balls. Magnus is always challenging himself but in a safe way.
Really need more of these. I want to see Magnus convert to a full time tree climber. These are literally my favorite videos he’s ever put out.

Having spent a fair amount of time in Indonesia and the Philippines - lots of local guys are awesome, effortless tree-climbers even in their older years, often carrying various tools depending on the purpose, or just climbing smooth bamboo structures of buildings balancing to repair the roof or wiring, without appearing to give it a second thought. So impressed with the sheer skill and nimbleness. I particularly remember an old gardener who climbed what looked to me like a 20-odd metre palm tree, swaying in the breeze, with no safety gear and carrying a big machete in one hand, to chop off dead leaves at the top and remove coconuts for safety. The safety of others it felt like, but he knew what he was doing I guess …

Climbing that big tree 12:50 was super cool, the strong bark made Magnus feel more in his element and it felt like a new wall climbing discipline had been discovered!

This video feels scarier than the free solo one. Though its not at the same scale, the video with alex felt more controlled, planned and safe. Both climbs still made my hands sweat buckets though lol

Thank you for all the great content, I just started climbing last week and I am loving it. I probably wouldn't have tried it if it wasn't for your videos.
Different levels of respect between the two. Rocks are obviously much different to trees when climbing. At least with rocks, they are way more sturdy than bark or branches. But, watching and listening to Leo, he's on a whole different level than Magnus. It's nice to see two professionals learning from each other, seeing where things do relate, and technique is king regardless of the similarities. I can't wait for more content of these two together.
I know you'll probably never read this, but of all the "out of your comfort zone climb" you've done, ice climbing seemed the most promising. I think you have serious potential in that discipline. Much love, and have a great life Magnus

Watching some world chase tag clips of Leo really shows how much better he is than most because of the training he does in nature, he just flows around like a leaf in the wind, going through the obstacles, it's crazy to watch.
You did amazing Magnus! Leo's jump at the end is something else. It's one of those things you wouldn't be afraid of if it was 5 ft off the ground, but up there it's absolutely wild.

definitely one of the most interesting climbers! i like how he takes inspiration from the professionals (our cousins the apes) and shows how effective their methods are in certain terrain; even teaching masters like magnus some tricks...
Watching Leo climb through trees felt a bit like looking into our distant history. What an amazing guy. Good on Magnus for trying out so much, its so interesting to see the differences in climbing styl and technique required. That jump at the end though 😮

Tarzan definitely follows the beat of his own drum, try not get caught up in his faith in his safety assessment. A fall from those heights could be fatal, and good lord that'd be a silly way to go

I've never seen a human move like that, running across the branches, but it looks so natural. Reminds you that we are a species of great ape, even if we're the most terrestrial of the bunch I have always wondered why tree-climbing, without equipment and for grown-ups, isn't a sport. It has so much potential and probably more connection to our past than rock climbing. I have to say it does look terrifying, but it's cool to see someone pursue it seriously and show what can be done

Homosapiens are the only hominin that still exists, but they are still their own category.

This guy's luck is gonna run out and a branch will snap. He grabs them on the long end, uses dead ones, etc. I get he knows what he's doing, but it only takes one mistake once and that's a wrap...

I watched a guy in thailand climbing trees like this picking coconuts as easy as if he was climbing a ladder. It was unreal. The trees were massive too, 60-70 feet easily.

Man, this is so beautiful. And Leo looks so happy. Love it.
The first video was great, but I kept thinking "this is all stuff I used to do as a kid" This video was another level entirely. I would never have climbed that far up a tree trunk if there were no branches to grab/land on if I fell. And when he just ran across the branches without using his hands at the end, I was blown away. I think he's a little bit of a mad man. This got me thinking back to my childhood and wondering how I survived past 10.

You hear a lot of people romanticising living in the wild, jumping from tree to tree and such, but this looks painful, miserable, and annoying. Frankly i'm glad we evolved to a point where we're now sitting in chairs fermenting in front of screens for our life's entirety.

He made it look so effortless… if not for Magnus tryiing it I wouldn't remember how wet a tree is especially in the morning when it's in the mountains right after the fog of dawn.
i from russia and too love climbing on the tree, especcially if is very wide and old high trees, i have 14 years practice. This guys is very good, but he should try to climb bear style
