  • TLDR: Nedved was incredible, especially for his first 2 years in Juve which was his absolute prime. But there have been all time great midfielders with similar stats who’ve had the same impact on their squad, similar stats, and in some cases, even more silverware. (Pirlo, Deco, Xavi, Bergkamp, Raul, Iniesta for example) and NEVER won the award. And Juventus nearly beat AC Milan in the final WITHOUT Nedved. Don’t forget, they also had Buffon, Del Piero, Trezeguet, Conte, Edgar Davids, they were NOT a bad team at all. What Henry did was just too big of a difference in individual stats AND historic enough to never be repeated even 20 years later.

    • Your point about Juventus almost beating Milan in the final without Nedved isn't actually the smoking gun that you think it is. If anything, it actually helps Nedved. Juventus played great purposeful football in the knockouts, and then were very drab and timid in the final. They beat Barcelona and Madrid with Nedved scoring decisive goals in both ties. They were considered the better team going into the final, as they had won Serie A and they had a much harder path to the final, compared to Milan who beat Ajax and Inter on away goals, a less challenging gauntlet than what Juve went through. So, saying they nearly beat AC Milan without him isn't really a strong point.

I can't state enough how influential Nedved was to that Juventus team. My father thought Zidane was irreplaceable, but when Nedved stepped up to replace him, even he conceded that Zidane may be more talented but Nedved was a total footballer, his consistency across 90m was unmatched, game after game. He didn't like that Henry was snubbed but he understood why it happened. The PL back then was mostly a two horse race with ManU & Arsenal leading the has beens, who were leading the rest. Italy by contrast was far more competitive. So many football legends are from that era of Serie A and Nedved stood out that season amongst them. I wish we had the stats we have now for ball recoveries, successful ball carry, passes into the box, tackles made etc... in that era, then perhaps the stats would tell people more of the story.

I think the Modric win is much more controversial since the only difference in team achievement between Ronaldo and Modric that year was that Croatia finished 2nd in the WC. Individually however, the gulf in impact was ridiculous. Ronaldo: - 1st player in history to score in all 6 group stage games of the CL. - 1st and only player to score in 11 consecutive CL matches - 15 goals & 3 assists in 13 UCL matches. - Directly involved in EVERY goal (scored or assisted) in the UCL Ro16 vs PSG. (Both legs) - Directly involved in EVERY goal (scored or assisted) in the UCL QF vs Juventus including the last minute winner (Both legs) - Scored the only 2 goals in the Club WC including a late winner in the final vs Gremio - Scored in the SuperCoppa win vs Barcelona - 26G & 5A in 27 La liga games - Saved Real Madrid's la liga season. Spent the first month without a goal and still managed to secure third place by the end of the season - most match points won by an individual player across Europe's top 5 leagues Ronaldo not winning was beyond a robbery...it killed the integrity of the award. (Messi also had a fantastic individual year and placed 5th. That whole ceremony was a shambles)

  • Nedved deserved it trust me... He took zidane's position in juve and he is criminally underrated.. Watch the games... Not just highlights.. Thats what these youtubers dont understand they just watch highlights and Wikipedia and chatgpt and dont watch full games... If u r analysing a player watch their full matches and when u watch them u ll know the impact of nedved in that season...

    • Yeah the ballon dor will always favor attacking players because goals and assists win games, but the difference in their individual production was just too high, its not like it was similar. And there have been midfielders who’ve had similar stats to Nedved with more trophies that didnt win the award (Iniesta, Deco, Bergkamp) just to name a few

    • @@RaymarFootballGoals and assists are just the easiest way to judge a ‘good player’. Goals win you games, but the way those goals are made are because of playmakers or a stable squad. For example, Sergio Ramos probably had the same individual influence on Real Madrid then let’s say Modrid had. You can’t really measure this, but maybe Sergio Ramos’ defensive presence won Real Madrid more games than Modric did with his goals and playmaking. The same can be said about Haaland. He scores a lot, but he also does because he plays in a well organised team were he receives the ball in the box. A player can change a team more than Haaland does and be the reason they win, but because he is the begin off the attack and not at the final stages, this doesn’t show up in the stats. If that makes sense. A player can always be at the end of the attack and finish the brilliance assists of his teammates, but when you check the stats it seems he is the absolute best player on the team and is the reason the team wins. When in fact, he ‘just’ finishes the brilliant plays of the teammates. How often do you see a goal where you think ‘wow, the goalscorer was just 1% of that goal. Brilliant assist’. Those assists do show up, but not the plays that were made during the earlier stages that made the goal possible. Again, you can’t measure this by numbers, so goals and assists are the easiest way to say ‘a player was the best’. The same reason why defensive players hardly ever win. Individually there are maybe better for their team than the winner, but the winner had a lot of goals and/or assists to show…

    • @@ielitecod933I love your take on this but it's unfortunate that these era is mostly all about goals and assists which is fine but there are key players in the team as well that make the team succeed just like you said. There are defenders and even the goal keepers and I think they underrate the impact of the goal keeper in his team and the defender as well. But it's what it is.
