How good was Lothar Matthaus actually? #GOAT
New video about one of the most controversial and naturally talented players we've seen over the 1990's in football. In this episode we take on Lothar Matthaus who played for Bayern, Borussia and Inter Milan for most of his career.
Matthaus parents were not from poland, his parents were from silesia which is current day poland however when they fled it was germany. Stalin changed the physical border of germany and poland. The name matthaus is certainly not polish and i doubt the player has any connections to poland
He looks unmistakably German too, like you said his name helps too.
I dont like frauds that use shit reasons to play for a different country hes not a fraud but imagine he was polish
@@eliteheister880 but he isn't. He's an ethnical german. I live in switzerland and we have a lot of germans from eastern germany like Brandenburg, Schlesien and Ostpreussen who came here as refugees at the end of WW II
@@HansFlamme ik i just said he's german all I said imagine he was polish and had a polish surname and all that
Lothar Matthaus did a DNA test which showed 24.7% German and 24.3% English.
Matthaus is arguably the Best in his position… Him and Rijkaard hardly get any recognition nowadays..
Matthaus often get but not so case with Rijkaard
@@Heman-kz6xr as a Milan fan Rijkaard will forever remain one of the greats imo
Dont forget Beckenbauer
For real Rijkaard is always forgotten.
True, clear by the lack of views in this video. People just seem to not care about him... Sad
Best midfielder of all time. Defend, tackle, run with the ball, great shot, scored goals, box to box all day, great attitude on the pitch, never gave up and was a winner
A complete player
How football should be played
Best defensive midfielder yeah
For his time he was even a technical player
Hail Mathaus ,!!!!⚽⚽⚽
Best defensive midfielder ever. The complete package he could do everything.
Facts
And the fact that he had such a devastating long-range shot, the dribbling of Michael Laudrup, and the vision of Totti
he was offensive midfield at inter and later sweeper at bayern
Matthäus played in all midfield positions. At the 1986 World Cup and Euro 1988, Matthäus played as a central midfielder. Already in his first spell at Bayern München, Borussia Mönchengladbach and in the 1990 World Cup, Matthäus played as a defensive midfielder and at Internazionale, he played as an attacking midfielder.

World definitely hasnt forgotten Matthaus. World of football that is. Only those twitter teen fans who have been watching football (CL, predominantly) since 2010 might not be aware of him. But they are not aware of any great legendary player from the past.
Yeah, kids only know Messi and Ronaldo nowadays.
In germany everybody knows him. Though that is less for his football skills than his skills in the English language. That and maybe his tendency to marry eastern European women under 20.
Klinsmann also won the World Cup in 1990 and the player that defended Maradonna in the final was Guido Buchwald(legend!). But great work, Lothar definatly deserves all the credits! I was born in 1987 East-Germany and everytime i touched the ball, as i was a kid, i wanted to play like him.
Incredible player, fantastic technically yet completely bereft of any flair whatsoever. I remember one of the Dutch players called him Germany's most German player.
lol
@@gandalf_thegrey Flair without substance gets you nowhere.
Interestingly, that description fits the German team of the 2010s-today even more accurately than it does for Matthaus.
My father named me after this guy for some reason lmao, he said that they already liked the name beforehand but watching this guy literally style on the WC made him decide.
This is awesome
Matthäus is also the name in German of The Apostle Matthew from the Bible.
Were you German Christian or Brazilian can explain how you got the name
@@user-yl6wr7dj1r im Brazilian of roman Catholic Italian descent from both parents, Matheus is a popular name in Brazil, when I asked my parents why they named me this, my mom wanted a biblical name, and my dad liked Matheus, so both agreed on it, bear in mind, although the spelling is different, pronunciation is pretty similar. My dad said his inspiration for the name came from watching lothar in the wc
That’s Cool!
If Arnold Schwarzenegger was 5"7, and became a footballer instead of a bodybuilder
they look so alike, hes just a skinny short version 💀
Klinsmann was also part of the German Squad that won the World Cup in 1990
He wasn't just part he scored at least three important goals. He was the main striker.
Yeah that was a weird thing to say, Klinsmann was key to the World Cup win

There was a big rivalry between Puma and Adidas workers in that village. As his parents worked for Puma, he obviously was a Puma guy. So when he joined Bayern Munich, who at that time had a contract with Adidas, he was the only player who was allowed to wear Puma.

I was at the 99 CL Final when Man Utd beat Bayern in injury time. I felt he controlled the game that day. Hitzfeld’s biggest mistake was bringing him off with about 13 minutes to go thinking they had won. Thankfully for us Utd fans he came off. Also - a very graceful and humble player.
Amazing video. Lothar Matthaus is definitely a football icon who deserves more recognition. Love the video. Thank you
Thanks!
The way this guy tells soccer stories is on another level
More than pressing the like button, this video made me a subscriber! I was still a child, younger than 10 the first time I saw Lothar Matthaus play, he's one of the reasons why even though I'm not German at all, I have always rooted for Germany in every single world cup since 1986. Sad his personal life overshadowed his greatness. He's an unforgettable footballer, a living legend.
He is to this day my favourite player. Loved watching him as a kid. His attitude on the pitch was incredible - immensely determined but still team oriented. He had basically everything. Always felt like dribbling doesnt feel efficient enough for him.
We share the same favourite player!
You finally did Matthaus! I sent you am email telling you to cover him, love your content bro
Thanks man! Did I reply to the email? I try to reply to most, maybe that was why I added him to my list
@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT Yeah you did reply, it was a nice reply too🙌🏾
The panzer was insane I remember when I was in Rome he played in Inter Milan and god he was good with Brehme and Klinsmann
italian league was top league at that time... inter had german trio of mattheus, brehme and klinsmmmann, while ac milan had the dutch trio of van basten, gullit and rijkaard
@@sebastiancovac7879and ac Milan had the best defence ever seen cough
Juve had Möller, Kohler and Reuter. All german national players and 97cl winners with Borussia Dortmund
So many people calling him a defensive midfielder. He did more of that as he got older, but he was an attacking machine in his prime as almost a goal every 3 games is testament to. Lightning quick and a foot like a traction engine, he scored some incredible goals!
He was a "Segundo Volante". It's a very Attacking "defensiv midfielder" Role.
The best I have ever seen...THE absolute Leader. Never again will we see a Libero, defensive 6 , dynamic 8 and offensive 10 in one person like Lothar Matthäus. I don't care about Messi, Ronaldo, Benzema, Lewandowski etc...for me Matthäus will always remain the best player. He encapsulated the absolute will to win...his time at Inter Milan and if course Bayern... incredible. His far distance passes were endlevel...only Diego Maradonna remains on his own Level.
I'm 55yrs old and I remember his career very very well, and Maradona. I remember Mattaus being held in very high regards in England and everywhere else? He was absolutely amazing and he ran the German team.
His performance at Euro 88 was an awakening for me (a young boy at that time) as to how to play as a box to box midfielder. His strong surging run against Spain leading to their 2nd goal was awe-inspiring for me. Thank you for making this video. Your channel rocks!
Klinsmann was a regular starter in the 1990 world cup squad so he definetly won the world cup.
Yes
He won also the euro in 1996 as captain
Klinsmann's role was even almost as decisive as Matthäus'. His performance against the Netherlands (maybe the most important game on the way to the cup) was incredible and the press lauded it as the "best performance of a German striker ever".
Exactly! They both won it Italia 90!
I really dont know how but my uncle knows him personally (he's a lawyer and a Bayern fan so maybe thats why) and him and Lothar can be considerd friends even got invited to Lothars 5th or so marriage. You dont have to believe but he showed me the pictures with him and told me some stories
It is possible bro. Matthaus isn't some god even my sibling is a good friend of Manuel Valls, former French PM.
Thank you so much Bro for this beautiful video on Lothar. He is one of my all time greats 🔥❤️
Man, I love these videos of yours that talked about legends that many had already forgotten. In the game of football, many were so brilliantly yet so easily being forgotten as new era come. Thanks for the video, I really appreciate it. Also, May I ask if you could do a video about Michael Ballack, the king of second place? He is my favorite player and I would absolutely love to hear about his story from your channel.
Moment of silence for Matthäus, who literally had his name misspelled at least 10 times in this video. 😩😂

Often overlooked as one of the greats , but Lothar certainly is
The epitome of underrated
he isn't overlooked. He has been voted into FIFAs all-time 11.
Seeing Maradona in the Bayern shirt at the end is so heartwarming
I'll summarize my journey into being a football fan. Was born in 1986, so Diego Maradona was the biggest star for the first few years of my life. Then the 94 World Cup came and Baggio is the reason I started watching football. Then by chance going through a video of the 1990 World Cup, there he was, Mattheus showcasing his brilliance, he's the reason I became a midfielder and would watch his videos over. Diego got me interested, Baggio got me watching and Lother got me playing the greatest game ever, FOOTBALL ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Probably the greatest defensive midfielder of all time. If you need anybody to man mark somebody and all play attacking football, Lothar Matthaus was second to none.
I think that one of the things that defined Matthäus in his prime and that gets barely touched on in this video is how he made everyone around him better. There was a clear difference between Bayern or the national team with him on the pitch vs. with him off the pitch, and I think that more than anything else, that makes him one of the all-time goats. He was, albeit a completely different type of player, the Xavi of his generation.
you are legendary thank you so much!!!! brilliant stuff!!!
Another great video by the way as you have educated me on one or two things there. So controversial it would seem , almost like The Dutch for instance. Keep them coming 👏👍
Great, Great Video ! Excellent Research and very passion narrative. Congrat's man ! keep posting! Regards from Brasil, ps : the Maradona video was outstanding !
Good view as usual. I watched Lothar play in every World Cup. One of the best Midfielders.
Thanks again for the videos ! Great work !
I should be the one thanking you guys, the support has been overwhelming
Yet again a brilliant video. Muito obrigado!
Great subject and great video, as always! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks!
Matthaus was underrated. People don’t give him credit. For me one of the greatest players of all time. Also when he won titles at Bayern. Bayern weren’t the dominant team in Germany as they are today. Plus inter winning the league title when napoli and AC were the dominant teams.
He is THEE most complete, box-to-box midfielder of all time.
The best player of 1990 world cup .
I never knew this side of mathaus..i grew up watching the end of his carreer, and only knew him as the legend that he is..but,much like keane (both of them),cantona, etc.,it's what also made him great..
He belongs to the top 20 footballers the world has seen so far
He does. Most complete, box-to-box midfielder of all time

Being German and growing up during the later part of his career. You still often forget how good he actually was because nowadays he just makes a fool of himself in the media most of the time sadly
How so? Is he some right wing loony!
Most of the time he tells things as they are and is an objective pundit but not very articulate. I like his objectivenes
Great video and moving career of Lothar. He was no less short tempered than any of his South American peers 😉
Great video as always bro!
He was my favourite player when I started following football in the 90s. Thanks dad!
my dad told me about matthaus he was such a great player he was gifted in everything a legend
Fascinating! I didn't know about his controversial side
Thanks for the great video. Being from Germany I adored him as a kid. Problem was that after his career he just wasn't that successful as a public person and football coach. And describing himself as a "legend" didn't help. Of course he was one of the greatest... yet others aged better. 👍

Best defensive midfielder ever, no one can deny that
Most complete player of all time.
One of the midfield goats but as a bayern fan i had to admit in 1999 he went off the pitch too early and this brought us the mother of all defeats.
When I was young I only saw his last years few years in Bayern Munich. Little did I know how much of a legend he actually was. The more sad is it to see how his controversial personal life overshadows his legacy (similiar to boris becker).
Becker is not even close...Loddar had a nice reality TV show on his domestic life! One big embarrassment!
I really love this channel.
I love you guys!
Watched him so many times play in the 90s in Munich for Bayern just an amazing player totally powerhorse for sure!

you need to make video about Henrik Larsson, most underrated player of all time, he deserve some respect and a video on your channel!

I've been meaning to for so long, what a legend
Matthäus wasn’t particularly liked as he felt he was his generation’s Beckenbauer and resented that he didn’t get the respect and admiration he thought he deserved. He also held his face into every camera, and presented one trophy wife after another, all of whom left him after extracting generous divorce settlements. Then Matthäus became a coach but no league 1 team wanted to hire him, which reinforced his sense of being disrespected. Things have turned around only in the past 10 years or so. Today Matthäus is a well respected and liked TV commentator and pundit. He finally has found a role that goes well with him, and age seems to made him wiser, calmer, more humble. He doesn’t take himself that seriously any more.
Exactly. Misunderstood character off pitch maybe. I like him more and more
Matthaus is alongside Seedorf the most complete player I have ever seen.
I'm putting Matthäus slightly above Seedorf.
He was a machine
He was an outstading player, I saw almost the end of his career at the 90's
Guido Buchwald was the German Player who guarded Maradona in the 1990 World Cup Final, not Matthaeus. Matthaeus played the key pass that was leading to the penalty.
