Especially an older veteran that hasn't had a lot of serious combat time recently that is using a longsword in an enclosed space. Of all the shit Game of Thrones did to hurt me, Barristan's death is pretty reasonable in comparison.

    • @@makeway3080 Not true. Sure a kid can shoot and kill a seasoned combat veteran, much like a kid could stab Barristan Selmy with a sword. You may think one is more unlikely than the other, but they're both equally unlikely if the seasoned veteran and Selmy are actually fighting the kid.

    • I loved these subtleties between warriors. Another of my favorites is when they bring the wight to Cersei. Jamie is sitting there with a smirk on his face because he's not taking the threat seriously - until he sees the fear on the Hound's face. Then his smile immediately melts away because he knows that if the Hound is afraid, they're all in deep shit.

Just her name and what she and her past stands for, already had so much value and affection. She was like the first person you would root for. He earned the nickname after he rescued the mad king after he had been captured and held during the Defiance of Duskendale. Following the defiance, Aerys II had the houses who were involved executed down to the last child, except for one who was spared at Barristan Selmy's request.

  • This was a good change from the books. In the book they don't realize who Selmy is until much much later. But in a movie, the audience can recognize the actor. • Danny had so much potential and they threw it out the window. Up until season 8 she was shown to be merciful and fair, saving the lives of innocents even if it didn’t benefit her. “How many slaves are there in Yunkai?” “200,000, if not more.” “Then we have 200,000 reasons to take the city.” Only for season 8 to roll in and have her burning thousands of screaming men women and children out of revenge on the people who did no harm to her. “Let it be fear.” They absolutely annihilated her character..

    • One thing. The men who earlier moderated her behavior were dead. That and it's my understanding - that what Happened when she burned King's Landing - was her inner ... tyrant ..... ?? ... coming out. I think a lot of her fans wanted she and Jon to get married and live happily ever after but they had decided that wasn't going to happen. So they had her happily burn Kings Landing and say she was going to do that to the rest of Westeros as well. .

It started with clearly evil slavers, then indiscriminate slavers, then slaves she thought were evil, then really anyone against her, even bringing back sport killing tournaments, and so on. • A pretty big theme of the books is that the generation in power is starting to age. Cersei feels threatened by Margaery, King Robert and Ned Stark focus more on politics than fighting in battles and tournaments, and in the books Jaime reminisces of Rhaegar Targaryen, Arthur Dayne and young Barristan and how all of them were greater knights than any young ones currently alive. I like it, personally - not every piece of fiction has to only star teenagers and twenty-somethings.

In fact, Robert respected Ser Barristan’s skill so much he pardoned him for his loyalty towards the Targaryens and even fighting alongside Rhaegar in the Battle of Trident AGAINST Robert himself. It reminds you of the fact it wasn’t the Targaryen ended the Blackfyre Rebellion (at least through the male line), it was young Ser Barristan, even before he became Kingsguard through Aerys, it was in Aerys’ father’s reign.

  • This scene is a classic device of introducing characters. At the beginning we are presented with two characters: A young girl and a mysterious man in a hood. The young girl looks innocent and the man looks threatening. At the end, we find out it was the exact opposite: The girl was the dangerous one and the man was the one who was trying to protect the character. A similar device of introduction of characters can be seen in Terminator 2. We're introduced to Arnold's character who we assume wants to kill Sarah because he did try to kill her in the previous movie, whereas the other character is even dressed as a Police man.... only to find out it's the other way around.

    • le krieg why would he put himself in that situations. Answer : D&D wanted to cut plot lines so instead of Barristan running the city they had Tyrion’s journey sped up so he ran it. It’s a dumb way to end his plotline would have been nice if he killed some assassin after her and died to poison or something. He’s still alive and well in the books

    • ***** Yeah it's because Essos is so boring and disconnected to the main plot at Westeros. When I reread the books I tend to skip her chapters too excluding the important ones (i.e. Viserys & Drogo's deaths, hatching the dragon eggs, House of Undying, conquering Astapor, etc). I do like Dany as a character though and it's going to be awesome when she finally hits Westeros.

Strictly speaking, it's kinda redundant since 'Commander' itself should be enough to know what that person's position is but I just love the sound of 'Lord Commander' too much.

    • @@Ethan-uo4fr - Actually, Martin had a very great influence on how the show turned out. It was D&D's job to adapt Martin's novels into a TV series lasting 7 seasons. Before Season 1 had gone into production, Martin had started writing Winds of Winter. Now, ten years later, the book still hasn't been finished, and the final book, A Dream of Spring, has not even started to be written. Most authors who take their writing careers seriously manage more than two books in a decade, and Martin couldn't finish ONE. It should have been a safe assumption that Martin would have delivered the sixth book and be nearly done with book seven by the time Season 6 would go into production. As it was Seasons 7 and 8 tackle the subject matter of what the final 2 books cover. It didn't matter that HBO was going to grant D&D 10 full seasons. At the time Season 8 went into production, AFTER taking a YEAR on hiatus, Martin had managed to miss yet another deadline... Considering how long he had already taken, it was no longer realistic to assume that the final book would be out before Season 10 would need to go into production. I can only speculate, but as disjointed as Season 7 was compared to the seasons that had come before, D&D likely only had detailed notes on the Winds of Winter content and only a list of Bullet Points for A Dream of Spring. It was they job to ADAPT Martin's story, not FINISH WRITING it for him. When the book content was exhausted, the writing of the show began to decline. There's a video here on KZhead where Martin and Stephen King appear together. Martin asks King how he can write so many books... He actually WRITES them.

    • It's different in the books. In the books he tried to pass himself off as a man named Arstan Whitebeard, a servant of Ilyrio (the rich guy in Pentos from Season One). Just as they are about to lay besiege Mereen, Jorah, out of jealousy of the favor "Arstan" is getting, outs him as Ser Barristan. And in return, Ser Barristan outs him as Robert's informer. Dany is furious with both of them, but Barristan begs her forgiveness while Jorah stubbornly insists that he was not in the wrong. So she feels she has no choice but to banish him. Hope this helps.

    • maximumhate666 The kingsguard serve for life, no matter which king sits the Iron Throne. It is not for them to judge who should be the king, only to serve and protect once a king has come forth. Aerys died, so he served Robert, Robert died so he served Joffrey. He got the boot so he went to serve Dany. There was no betrayal, he did what kingsguard do and then once he was kingsguard no longer he went to find someone else to fight for since it was all he knew.
