yep, amazing movie. Works on so many levels and touches most genres.
From what I can understand, this symbolism could mean the Beast's possible redemption: *prideful-turned-humble.*
Stephen Chow is the only Director I know who managed to put Action, Martial Arts, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Romance, Fantasy, Crime, in this film, usually movies are only able to fit around 3 different genres. It was way ahead of its time since 2004 even today, this was an absolute masterpiece.
Brotherhood of the Wolf will like a word as well.
Throughout the movie, Stephen Chow was portrayed as comedian but he transformed to a serious person in just 8 minutes. The fact that he didn't talk during this entire fight scene and managed to deliver a befitting reply in the end is awesome
It was a really excellent choice to have him not speak during the fight it makes him much more intimidating and stoic!
Aside from the begining where he just steps on everyones feet

Steven Chow. A true master of his trade. The story telling, the plot devices, the stunts, the wire work all masterfully executed. Kung-Fu Hustle is a perfect action comedy. Leung Siu-lung delivers a compelling performance as the Beast. The film would not have been the same without this legendary actor. It is my understanding that there were aspects of his character that he didn't like. Glad he had the patience and the wisdom to follow direction. The subplot of the Beast and the Star-Crossed Lovers is the hook that makes this film more than a silly comedy and elevates the film into the highest art. This movie never gets old. It is always funny. It is always exciting. And it always leaves you feeling edified.
Man, you said it best! I cannot recall any time a comment has captured my exact feelings more.
thaty guy is a genius
Love the way he's cast in shadow standing against the sun in the end. He's become something The Beast can't comprehend, a height he can't glimpse.
also the beasts strongest martial arts is imitating a frog. " a frog in the well knows nothing about the sea" aka be aware of your own limitations, which the beast wasnt.
The actor who played the Beast, Bruce Leung, was a famous martial art actor in the mid 70s to early 80s in Hong Kong. He was not as fortunate as Jacky Chan or Bruce Lee and retired to business after early 80s. Stephen Chow invited him to come out of retirement for this movie. However Leung in an interview mentioned that he was a bit upset that some mannerism in the movie is a bit humiliating ( like picking nose or ears ).
I definitely don't think he got the recognition he may have deserved. But Stephen Chow picked him to be in a comedic/martial arts film and I think he did so because he knew of his prestige but wanted to bring him back at the same time if that makes sense. I love Stephen Chow's movies and the actors he chooses because of their knowledge of martial arts and their ability to act with satire in their roles. (not disagreeing with you in anyway)
So the actor is a badass movie star coming out of retirement to play a badass Assassin coming out of "retirement". (We all know he could have easily gotten out if he wanted to.)
Funny thing was that it was the picking the nose and ears that grounded the character and made hime more realistic. Loved him as the Beast.
Also he has a habit of picking new stars to be in his movies and later have a relationship with them, example Athena Chu, Karen Mok and Cecilia Cheung 😂
The callouses on his hands tho . . . :O
" If you want to learn , I'll teach you " has such a profound meaning here . Beast's Kungfu philosophy is becoming #1 by defeating everyone in his path. Master show him, the essence of Kungfu is not killing but sharing.
He teach you but he has to charge
That's the power of Buddha, He was truly enlightened.
He just curious what technique to fly that thing

What's the essence of the UFC?
The lady and the lord projecting him as their son is the sweetest thing ever. I always almost cry when I watch them.
The part where Sing stomps on Beast's toes is absolutely hilarious! What makes it so funny is that Beast had previously dismissed the move as "kid's stuff". Now he gets hammered by it. A lovely piece of comedic irony!
The best part that makes me dying "I can even stop bull...... UWAAAAGGHHHHH" 🤣 Sing was like: okay, but can you stop my stomp??
This is the closest we'll ever get to a fully realised live action anime fight: The side characters that give commentary on everything MC does, the MC himself, the villain and the eventual surrender and change of heart, OP ass final/finishing move, the back and forth between MC and villain, the bottom to top story, the best friend who was there for everything. “If you want to learn, I’ll teach you.” I love that’s how he defeats the final boss. The toad guy never wanted to take over the world or destroy. The man was just bored with life thinking he achieved his strongest level. Having him kneel was the best way to defeat him without killing him or putting him back in prison.
He's a kung fu obsessive maniac willing to kill anyone so that he could find himself the entertainment that he needs. Only kneel cause he knows he'll lose and would most likely die if he retaliate. This is the same guy that punch and shattered the other dude face in the concrete 3 times just cause he hit him with a wood.
@@TheVermillion97 the entire concept of Buddhism is enlightenment. His enemy was completely without selfish motivation and seemingly has achieved nirvana. This fight doesn't only show how strong Sing (the protagonist) has become, but also how wise he is. He didn't use any fancy move to defeat the axe gang, only move that's necessary to defeat them. That's why the beast said it's "kid's stuff". Even against the beast, he still didn't use any big move. Only when he was brought to the corner, he use his powerful attack
One of the things I love about this scene was that the landlord couple mentioned about their late son who is "probably about (Sing's) age", hinting what might probably a heartbreaking story about how and why their son died. I hope the second movie is a prequel exploring this.

Beast and Sing are yin and yang. Both are martial artists who lost faith in the world. One after achieving immense power, the other after experiencing immense weakness. Sing is thrashed by Beast’s “power”, waking up his own inner potential, but the difference is Sing’s weakness allows him to see the bigger picture and show Beast mercy. Beast understands the lesson and is brought to his knees and Sing becomes his “master”, coming full circle and now the weakest is teaching the strongest about humility and inner peace. Such strong storyline woven into this whimsical film ❤

it's a coincidence due to translation at the start The Beast was making fun of Chow by saying "踩腳趾” which literally means stepping on one's toe. The intention of the translation is to show that The Beast was unimpressed, as seen in his next sentence which he claims that only kids will step on another's toe during a fight “細佬仔打交先至會嘖”。
Except for the second time was humbled
a change of tone, too, from unimpressed to completely dumbfound by how strong a move can be.
It's just a matter of translation, he actually said "toes"
Stephen Chow. Wow, not only acted in this movie but produced it. What a genius. Saw this movie years ago and have to come to conclusion that the writing/story makes this movie the greatest Kung Fu movie of all time. Has humor, romance, action, subtle subconscious 'Foreshadowing' throughout movie. The Subplot of the true nature of one's inner self which is the Buddhist quality of compassion and knowing one's true self when found. I wish Stephen Chow made more films like this and Shaolin Soccer. Blending Kung fu, eccentric characters, comedy, with Looney Tunes style antics.
What I find so fascinating about the final battle is when the Beast starts utilizing the Toad Style. It's like, up until this point, he's used zero actual moves, just punches and kicks. He never had to do anything else, since he is just that ridiculously strong and fast. Why pull out techniques when just brute strength wins the fight for him? It's only when he gets pushed fully to the ground and forced to recognize he's fighting someone strong enough to warrant it that he pulls out the real moves.

I hate it when the translations incorrect. It might not necessarily change message, but it's still annoying lol.
He said "I lost" because he always thought defeating others is what makes him stronger - that's his objective right from the start when he escaped from jail - to find a worthy opponent to beat. When the landlady couple almost beat him at the casino, he cheated and stabbed them both in the stomachs with the spikes. That's his worldview - defeating others is everything. In the final fight, Ah Sing almost crushed him with the Buddhist Palm from outer space, but he was forgiven him for the first time. Then he tried to stab Ah Sing with the spike but Ah Sing blew a hole in the building inches away from his face - that's the second time he was forgiven. When he asks Ah Sing what move that was, Ah Sing offers to teach him - that's him being forgiven for the third time. Ah Sing is offering to teach him the Buddhist Palm of kindness, forgiveness, and mercy. That's when he learned that defeating other doesn't make you strong. Kindness is what makes you strong - which is the central tenet in Buddhism (hence the Buddhist Palm move which the whole story is revolved around). That's when he realized that he lost because he's been wrong all his life.
Well "Master!" is a better line so who cares? IE they changed it to Master because it was better than a hollow "I was defeated" or "I lost".
@@alandgomez5905 It was a mistaken translation, I heard 'sifu' the first time instead of "my loss". the audio isn't good at that moment mixed with the increase in volume is what did it. Whoever was doing the translation is doing it by ear instead of reading the script.
Throughout the entire fight scene that Stephen Chow has directed, I feel that the entire conflict between The Beast and Sing is all about taming a wild animal. This movie never gets old for me. I never get tired of watching it over.
The first punch to the Beast really sets the mood for the fight 🙃
Years ago I accidentally stopped on a channel playing this movie.......the rest is history as they say. Always brings a smile to my face.
I miss when martial arts movies weren't so damn serious about themselves. Kungfu Theater was my fav show and this was one of my fav movies.
I loved this movie when I first saw it. I like how they introduce a stronger and stronger character with their own signature move throughout the movie with the last one being the best.
2:53 was awesome scene 🤣
6:14 Me dropping in Warzone.
I've watched this movie a hundred times and it never gets old. Stephen Chow needs to make more!
Nice
Absolutely love this movie!! Damn near every fight scene is epic!!
This is the type of escapism I'm looking for but not getting in today's movies. I miss this kind of stuff. What a great 8 minutes and 37 seconds!
The One Palm Man🤚
The One Stolen Comment 👎
I always love this scene and the one where the blind brothers are playing their instruments. This is that type of classic movie that makes you want open up plex and watch those two scenes on a Friday movie night.
Yeah 💪🏼💪🏼
He will forever be a legend. Absolutely love him even today.
still one of the most epic kung fu fight scenes of all time, no dought, badass🔥
This movie's insane. It's exactly what a spoof of 70s kung fu movies should be.
Still one of the most timeless movie. Come back to this every now and then
The little bit about "If he studied really hard he could become a doctor or a lawyer" is so good hahahaha. Love this movie.
