Lapphunds are excellent dogs and like you said, they're very friendly and loyal. The fur is a breed trait because Lappland is a really cold place where the sun doesn't rise for several months during winter and since these dogs herd reindeer, they need warmth. Source: I'm a Finn.

While I don't think both her parents were Lapphunds, I believe one of them was because she looks almost IDENTICAL to Ilo. That and every time my mom would brush her, she would shed off enough fur to make a second dog!

I have a finnish lapphund. When we got to our vaccinating appointment the doctor asked me: "did you resently bathe him?" I answered "yes, for the first time in five years about two months ago, because he started to smell like a dog". The doctor was amused and said that she imagined that my boy was washed yesterday. That is just how fancy and fresh finnish lapphunds are when the coat is rightly formed and you comb them ones in a while. :)
Well, if nothing else, it looks like you've got a good start on building your own Lapphund.

@@ollikoskiniemi6221 You saying that's not even his final form!?
@@terminallove3531 Yes! The dog doesn't get more cute, quite the opposite. It will still be cute, but as the dog reaches maturity, it starts to look more "noble" and "majestic" and rugged as opposed to cute. It will also look funnier in a good way. I'm just saying that these dogs are like human males. The older they get, the less cute and more respectable they look.
My grandma has a Swedish Lapphund named Lucky, and trust me, this amount of shedding is normal... They brush him every day, they bathe him once a week, they even go to a pet groomer once a month, and he's still leaving hair all around the house. They're great dogs- intelligent, playful and easygoing- but you can start a wool sweater production if you have one, they shed so much hair.

It would be honestly quite genius to start making yarn out of dog hair. A great way to re-use all that hair. It wouldn't suit people with dog allergies tho....

Hi Vanessa, I just wanted to thank you for showing the breed and Ilo for being such a lovely ambassador. Thanks to this video we got our own Finnish Lapphund, Freya - she just turned one year old. I now have my own little ball of fluff, his name is Ukulele, he is 6 months old and I would die for him. Thank you Vanessa for introducing me to this incredible breed !
Finnish animal breeds (dogs, horses, cows etc.) are all very friendly in general and have a great temperament. :) I'm glad you found the perfect match for your family! ❤
He is soooooo fluffy, so sweet and well educated that I simply want to hug him. What a wonderful dog!
I had a finnish lapphund a few years ago, literally the nicest dog ever you can own. They are such delight! As I am from northern Sweden, the finnish lapphund is quite common there alongside it's swedish cousin: the swedish lapphund. Mostly their coat color being the differentiating factor. The name lapphund means "sami dog", samis being one of the indigenous human populations in sweden (+ finland and norway). The lapphund was bred for multipurpose use, but mainly for herding and protecting rain deer. This makes them very smart dogs, able to learn and do anything. Their coat is so thick, allowing them to withstand essentially any amount of cold. Minus 30 celsius (-22F) is literally like a cool summer breeze for these dogs. The dog is also a very healthy breed, like most northern european spitz breeds they can easily grow to around 15 years old. Mine became 16 years old. The lapphund is also a perfect family dog, being so gentle and caring. They are able to relax so easily, but still really enjoying an active lifestyle. Some lapphund facts for you people :D Edit: I thought he wasn't a pure bred lapphund mostly because of his droopy ears, but I've been told below they can have droopy ears. But first time for me seeing one with it, droopy ears are definitely not common!
They're some fine doggos
As a sami person i would like to express that "lapp" is a derogatory term and we would rather not be called that, most fellow sami i have met agree, although some don't mind the word
So informative, thank you
@@ars10001 I assume that in SE+NO+FI there's a lot of historical hangover with the word "Lapp" though? i.e., we've always called them Lapphunds so we're not going to stop despite, etc.?
@@kaiwu2346 the comment was to bring light to the usage because they translated the name meaning "sami dogs" i just wanted to make sure no one started unasumingly using lapp meaning sami without thinking it through. I have come to peace that we cannot change some things...but please do not call the people "lapp" it's still as a slur today.

To anyone who thinks of getting such a dog: keep in mind that their breed is used to extremely cold temperatures. -30° to 15°C (-22° to 60°F) over the year. So it is not good for the dog to keep them anywhere south.
do you think the South of England / North or Center of France would be appropriate for such a dog ?
@@billy_romeo That area should still be good yes :) I believe I have seen a video from someone in southern UK with a Lapphund too
@@billy_romeo I would also like to say that during very wet rainy times you should take extra care to make sure their coat dries all the way since it can be so dense it takes a long time to dry and be dry to touch but still damp next to the skin(learned this during a very rainy summer). though if it doesn't get super cold they may grow less undercoat.
I live in Alberta, I'm good lol
@@billy_romeo Thats fine. As long as you don’t live in a super hot place you manage with it :) we had a super hot summer in finland, so i only went on short walks with my dog during the day and long one at night. My grandparents used to have a Finnish Lapphunds for like 40 years. I have very fond memories of getting licked in my face whenever visiting my grandparents when I was a kid. My grandparents are gone now, and so are the dogs. They had always had one, but the last one was the best dog. He was called Jaakko and he was the best dog ever, super smart, super obedient and such a nice dog all around. When he died of old age after a very happy life of farm work and being pampered to pieces my grand parents just never got a new dog, they were so fond of Jaakko. No dog could ever fill the void that he left. A few years after the passing of the dog, both of my grandparents died of natural causes (they were well in their eighties at this point so it's fine). I like to think that they are somehow together with the dog they and I loved so much.

That is, if the dog gets trained properly. I grew up with one and our dog was just like Ilo, big and fluffy and so well behaved. Fast forward to someone I dated for a couple of months; their family’s female Lapphund had absolutely no basic training, no self-confidence, and she was kept outside on a super short leash all year round. Her family didn’t even want to take her for walks because she was so problematic to handle. It broke my heart.
@@heppahullu pretty sure that goes for all dogs. A shitty owner can screw up any dog. Of course, the larger the dog the more of an issue it becomes generally.
I have a 15-year old Finnish Lapphund. I wish you could wash and brush him, because he absolutely hates brushing - the same reason as you said on the video. The undercoat is amazing.
