Walt Disney is an American icon. Through his characters, movies and theme parks, he strived to bring out that hope and inner child that every person needs. And in the process, he built one of the most successful and powerful companies in the world - worth an estimated $130 billion.
But before he was anywhere close to achieving success, he was homeless and only had $40 in his pocket.

  • Interesting fact about Walt: When delivering newspapers, he would occasionally sell them on trains bound for their destination (he would go a stop or two and switch back onto the next train home). He got bored of selling newspapers and in doing so, he started talking to folks on the trains - particularly older, Civil War vets. He was fascinated so much by their stories that he became intrigued with the whole time period. That's why he loved Lincoln as a president and wanted to incorporate American history into his parks. As a kid, he had the opportunity first-hand to hear from these vets from both sides of the war.

    • Not necessarily. Walt's real success came from being independent. Oswald was not his, and everything before that was (meant) to be funded by other distributors. But much of the time they fell through on what they agreed to pay Laugh-O-Gram. If he hadn't gone bankrupt, and if Mintz hadn't taken Oswald and most of Disney's animators, he never would have created Mickey. In the biography Disney's World, he vouched to his wife Lilian on the train ride home from New York that he would never work for anyone else, other than himself, again. If he had, we wouldn't know Walt Disney today. He might be some obscure name in entertainment history, but nothing to what he is and was.

  • Wait what, give me a second are you telling the big, evil, kid-friendly entertainment powerhouse came from a homeless Walt when he left his house at 16 and after that he made Laugh-O-Grams and Oswald and a year later made the one and only Mickey Mouse from 1928, I never heard that Walt left his home at 16? Rest was history.
