The Complete METROID Timeline Explained!

2024 ж. 28 Сәу.
918 100 Рет қаралды

The Metroid franchise has a sprawling timeline that weaves its sci-fi saga across 11 mainline games. But how does everything tie together?
Metroid Dread marks the conclusion of a story arc dating back 35 years, which takes in the original Metroid, Metroid 2: Return of Samus, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion. Hence, y’know, Metroid 5.
But that chronology doesn’t even take into account the Metroid Prime trilogy and its various handheld spin-offs, or even Metroid: Other M. So with Metroid Dread set to expand the canon and conclude Samus’ long-standing mission to exterminate the Metroids, what better time to recap the franchise’s entire story.
The above video breaks down the Metroid franchise's timeline from Samus' iconic confrontation with Mother Brain all the way through to Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread.
0:00 - Intro
1:15 - Samus' Origins
2:14 - Metroid Zero Mission
4:24 - Metroid Prime
6:50 - Metroid Prime Hunters
7:57 - Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
10:10 - Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
12:25 - Metroid Prime: Federation Force
13:57 - Metroid: Samus Returns
16:15 - Super Metroid
18:20 - Metroid: Other M
20:04 - Metroid Fusion
21:45 - Metroid Dread

Like saying that Samus Returns dropped the bombshell that the Chozo created the Metroids, which has been known since Fusion. • Adam, I would like to thank you immensely for doing this and doing it right. Metroid is literally the reason why I game since the first game have been around. I mean I was gaming before Metroid on Vic20, Atari, Commodore, PC, Amiga, but really Metroid is what incrusted my whole self into gaming. Not many people can tell the story rightfully but you sure did. Metroid has so much lore also that can still be developed, it's confusing indeed in some places regarding the timeline, I agree, but nonetheless, for the most part, it is fantastic sci-fi gaming and lore .And again, you deserve a zillion thanks for this. Much respect!

    • Other M deserves a lot of the flack it gets, but in the end it does give us some emotional attachment and understanding to Adam Malkovich. Sure, a lot of plot points are weak/re-used, and that shouldn't be ignored. However, it gave some "humanity" to Samus (if she's even human at all, but you get the point) and her past. Also, a lot of the manga is out of reach or unknown to the wider metroid audience, so I think it's ok to re-hash some of its plot in the games. EDIT: also the fusion story/backstory might have been lost to the newer part of the fan base, so Other M may have helped in that respect, even if it didn't do it the best it could have.

He doesn't joke around. He doesn't tolerate breaking protocol. He is a military leader, but he's still the only real role model that Samus had. But his hardness and Samus's hard headed essentially is what made her leave the Federation. Also, when he sacrifices himself, it's for no one but the mission. Yeah, he's not a kind man, but he's not evil. A man of duty, if you will

Also, the Little Birdie/Ridley maturation stuff was kind of important too. The Phantoom stuff even had a bit of credence because if you want to 100% the game, you have to do the end game item grabs and final boss fight, to get Adam's helmet. It is likely how we got the Adam AI in Fusion and Dread and how it has as much control of Samus as it does.

  • I was not aware that the events took place so close together. The whole series is like what two, at most two and a half, or three years old? No wonder she had a breakdown in Other M. Also there maybe an in lore explanation for every game that explains why Samus has to get her abilities back. The suit is genetically apart of her; it is literally apart of her body, or at least a super imposed piece. What if in those game, where it shows and tells you that she lost her powers, is just her getting injured, or suffering from a concussion? And she is slowing regenerating the abilities until a Chozo statue, or a recapture of the genetic material fixes the problem. Yeah, there are some games [Return of Samus] where the explanation is "Video Games", but in Fusion there is in an in world explanation; Samus suit can download data and transfer that into physical material (i.e. the bomb upgrades and health replenishes). So for the games where there is no explanation to her relearning her abilities again, those times can be seen like upgrades to said abilities. Anyway good video.
