  • I think what I've really learned from this is that it's illegal to make a Metroid game that doesn't end with samus's ship flying away from a huge explosion

    • It’s been a hallmark of the series since the beginning. The only games that don’t do this are Metroid 2 and its remake Samus Returns. In a sense, Prime 2 might count because only the realm of Dark Aethur implodes on itself, Samus leaves the planet of Aethur rejuvenated and saved. Hm, Metroid has a weird pattern of not exploding a planet in any game that has “2” in the title. It’s not a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened three times.

  • One personal theory I have about the X-Parasites is that they're a bioweapon. See, they're way, _way_ too fast, lethal and complex to be natural, and make literally _zero_ sense in the ecosystem. If the X-Parasites were some horrifying mistake of evolution (which I think is unlikely), they would've taken over the entirety of SR-388 long before the Chozo ever arrived; on ZDR, the X spread across the entire accessible map (and the entire _planet,_ if Raven Beak masquerading as ADAM can be believed) in a matter of minutes. Who or what created and unleashed it is unknown. In my mind, they're likely dead - maybe killed by their own creation, or maybe leaving the X-Parasites behind as a final spiteful act - but... the possibility that they aren't is a worry.

    @benjaminfinlay829@benjaminfinlay8292 жыл бұрын
    • So... the X parasite creators made a bioweapon that went on to become a menace, which were eventually stumbled upon by the Chozo, who decided the best way to get rid of them was a bioweapon that went on to become a menace.... guess we're lucky the federation decided to rely on Samus instead of creating a bioweapon to deal with the Metroids, eh?

    • I still don't think Raven Beak was talking to you the whole time. Maybe getting closer to the end of the game, yeah. But not right when she starts making her descent. I think that's what *they* want you to think, but I'm pretty sure it's ambiguous for that reason alone, to make ya think on it.

      @CLSharpman5000@CLSharpman50002 жыл бұрын
    • Honestly that's a great theory! Hell you can't even walk a few meters in the Metroid universe without stumbling across some ancient destructive supertech weapon. Although in my mind I always had the idea that the X-Parasites were some kind of early off shot of a planets' evolutionary tree. Kinda like the way that viruses don't fit into our evolutionary tree of life but still retain the ability to interact with out cellular protein structure. In our own DNA there's traces of all kinda of viral R/DNA I think that given enough time the organisms infected by X-Parasites evolved into their own species; then such that they became different enough to propagate new creatures that became immune or resisted the original Xs enough to flourish on the planet. As for how could the X-parasites survive that long? Well we already have living fossils species irl, this observation can be applied to the fictional setting. I hope to see the Xs in another future game. You know for a fact that blowing up a planet is never enough to kill a bio-weapon.

      @IammeoramI@IammeoramI2 жыл бұрын
    • That's one of the main reasons why the plot of Dread is ridiculous (among a bunch of others). There's no way an X mimicking a freaking CHOZO WARRIOR hadn't made sure of obliterating the whole planet in an extremely short time. And the game tells us that they were contained in a freaking dome? How was that possible? Who built it? The only explanation the game tries to give is Quiet Robe saying: "Raven Beak somehow managed to do it".

  • I, among a few others, believe that Exelion Star Corporation (the company that manufactured the EMMIs) is a business front for the Ringleaders or as I like to call them The Rogue Federation. The EMMIs had armor that was impervious to Samus' weapons and most of them held onto one of her abilities. They also had a probe that could instantly puncture her armor and take her DNA. It's no coincidence that they were this strong and formidable against her. After Samus was infected by the X and had sections of her suit removed, they took those parts to the BSL station and were able to research her technology and abilities. They sent the data to Rogue Federation scientists who were then able to reverse engineer her weapons to create robots that couldn't be killed by them. After the events of Fusion, the Rogue Federation was still determined to get their hands on Metroid DNA, but Samus was the only being that possessed it and she wasn't going to give it up because she knows the dangerous potential behind it. In order to get Metroid DNA, they had to set a trap for her. In the opening of Dread, notice the footage of the X parasite; it's out in the wild. As we progress through the game, we know that Raven Beak had all the X parasites quarantined in Elun until Samus was there, and then when they were out in the wild they infected the entire planet. From this, I conclude that the original footage was fake and made by the Rogue Federation to eventually lure Samus there. First send the EMMIs and pretend to lose contact, and then count on Samus to go there because of her good nature in protecting the galaxy. The Rogue Federation knew that there used to be a Chozo civilization there, but they thought they were all dead. They weren't counting on Raven Beak being there to mess with their plans. If you look at the Chozo archives, you have one image where RB beat the snot out of one of the EMMIs and was probably thinking "What is this thing?" He takes it to Quiet Robe for examination, which is where we see the other image of QR and RB looking at the EMMI's programming. They were commissioned by the Galactic Federation, built by Exelion Star Corporation, designed to gather Metroid DNA, and programmed to hunt down Samus Aran; they're durable material would ensure that she couldn't kill them by her typical means. This is how Raven Beak learns that Samus has Metroid DNA in her, so he hatches a plan. He orders QR to create the Central Control Units to take control of the EMMIs to hunt down Samus for his own purposes, and QR reluctantly obeys. Remember in Dread when you kill a Central Control Unit, the associated EMMI unit immediately goes ballistic to find Samus. I think the original plan that the Rogue Federation had for the EMMIs was to gang up on her and overwhelm her, but Raven Beak made them separate because he wanted Samus' Metroid DNA to continually take over her system over the course of the game. In summary, I think the Rogue Federation is still trying to get Metroid DNA, and the next series of 2D Metroid games will have her directly getting involved in removing the corruption from Galactic Federation leadership, even to the point where a civil war begins.

    @johnleonard9102@johnleonard91022 жыл бұрын
    • That's a theory that makes the most sense out of the poor plot of Metroid Dread. Samus confronting the corruption of the Federation should've been immediately tackled after Fusion (seeing what happened in that game and also in Other M). Bringing the X back wasn't the brightest writing decision (made even worse by the way it was handled in Dread).

  • You know, it's honestly amazing how much more palatable Other M is in the grand scheme of things when you remove the butchery of everyone's previously-established character and focus on what new things it brought to the Metroid timeline. Sure, Fusion executed its game gimmick better, but this bit about the faction of Federation Members trying to create Metroids feels like it's genuinely well-thought-out in terms of its place in the lore and how they worked it into the larger story as a whole. Unfortunately, "THE BABY" speaks louder.

If this was Samus' first encounter with Ridley since becoming a bounty hunter, her freezing would fit fine. If this was one of her first missions with Adam, her more emotional and less independent personality would fit a little better. It still wouldn't be perfect, but it would be far less of a regression.

  • I would like to sincerely thank you for addressing the often forgotten obfuscating element of translation error in Metroid lore discussions. In Other M and Fusion, especially, the choices made during localization caused the collective (Non-JP) fanbase's understanding of the state of the Galactic Federation, along with its relationship with Samus, to shift towards a mistaken notion that she was a fugitive. You addressed and clarified this beautifully and even handled the more contentious story beats of Other M in a respectful, careful manner that allows it its place in canon without causing too much of a clash with the rest of the series. I personally think that its original JP script-- while absolutely still not ideal in terms of tone and theme for Samus at that point in her career-- was a lot more in line with her character in general. Adam's character dynamic and the reason she didn't mind being called "Lady" by him is also a lot more consistent with what she says in Fusion in the JP script too. I still would call it easily the weak link in terms of storytelling, and I can totally see how people think it butchers Samus's character; it certainly doesn't do itself any favors with how it framed scenes like the PTSD episode when she sees Ridley again. (Which the subtext for in Japanese is actually pretty different than how it read in the game we got in the west, but again, it's hard to get that difference when it is conveyed visually as a PTSD episode.) All in all, this is the best Metroid lore summary video on KZhead as of the time of typing this. Bar none. I don't think you got a single thing outright wrong. I cannot wait to see whatever is coming next in Metroid Prime 4!

  • The most charitable interpretation of Other M’s story bits is that Samus was not gelling well with the Federation command structure and human culture in general, and she has undergone severe trauma with what happened with her parents and Zebes. The one-two punch of childhood trauma nearly destroying her psyche and coming back to a government that doubted her abilities left her adrift emotionally. Hence, the decreased maturity and the struggle to prove herself to the Federation. And when that fell apart, she eventually realized she didn’t need to prove anything: she was herself, and the Chozo were the Chozo, and the Federation was the Federation. This helped her process the trauma of her past, but it also left lingering scars on her psyche; scars that raised their ugly head multiple times, only to finally be confronted and laid permanently to rest.

  • I couldn't have asked for a better video on the Metroid Timeline. You didn't bullshit around, you were straightforward and broke everything down very very well. You didnt even end with a lengthy outro shilling your stuff, and I very much appreciate that. My only 2 curiosities are that you didn't mention Federation Force, granted I'm not really sure if its actually cannon or not. But also, that Kraid was in Dread. I know it was pretty much just for fanservice, but still woulda been neat to hear what your speculation would have been to his reasoning for being there. Also, your choice in music was fantastic. I loved the soundtracks from Hollow Knight, other Metroid games, and even Devil May Cry. Every track you chose was a near perfect fit for each segment of the story. My only complaint is how abruptly the music would cut into the next track, but it very obviously didnt take away from anything. I cant imagine the time you took writing and recording the script for this video, so bravo dude. Good fuckin' job.

    • Super Metroid having a smaller version of Kraid pretty much proves to me that Kraid isn't an individual but a species. The Federation sent Samus there after one of their vessels disappeared. - The ing did not steal the components to control the light energy, rather they had some of the energy itself along with clones of all the energy controllers, then they later stole the mew transfer module and by it the majority of the remaining energy.

  • Much respect, sir, to compile this massive collection of lore in one place. Though I would like to add maybe not a correction but a “food for thought” conversation to your lore regarding the Metroid Prime. The Chozo sealed the impact crater with a temple having no way in or out. Rather than giving the explanation of a Metroid just happened to phase in and become a mutated version of itself, perhaps there was a creature within considered a grave threat which guarded the core. After all, Metroid may be the species name, but the Metroid was created to invoke the ferocity of its namesake; Metroid meaning “ultimate warrior”. Thus a Metroid Prime would be a different species with that namesake explaining why it’s not just called “mutated”, “Corrupted”, “phazon”, or other such type of Metroid. Because it is a being capable of beating even their greatest weapon, their Metroids, they gave it a name to supplant the previous creature of the title of Metroid without confusing its name with that of the species name. (Also, different versions of Prime such as the PAL and trilogy have different data entries for certain entities and things which you may wish to look into if you haven’t already.)
