Battle of Berlin 1945 - Nazi Germany vs Soviet Union [HD]

The Battle of Berlin, designated the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation by the Soviet Union, was the final major offensive of the European theatre of World War II.
When the Soviet offensive resumed on 16 April, two Soviet fronts (army groups) attacked Berlin from the east and south, while a third overran German forces positioned north of Berlin. Before the main battle in Berlin commenced, the Red Army encircled the city after successful battles of the Seelow Heights and Halbe. On 20 April 1945, the 1st Belorussian Front led by Marshal Georgy Zhukov started shelling Berlin's city centre, while Marshal Ivan Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front had pushed from the south through the last formations of Army Group Centre. Concurrently, Hitler called for the activation of Operation Clausewitz on the same date. Defenses in Berlin's city center were mainly led by General Helmuth Weidling. These units consisted of several depleted and disorganized Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS divisions, along with poorly trained Volkssturm and Hitler Youth members. Within the next few days, the Red Army reached the city centre where close-quarters combat raged.
Before the battle was over, German Führer Adolf Hitler and many other major officials of the Nazi regime committed suicide. The city's garrison surrendered on 2 May, but fighting continued to the north-west, west, and south-west of the city until the end of the war in Europe on 8 May (9 May in the Soviet Union) as German units fought westward so that they could surrender to the Western Allies rather than to the Soviets.

    • Mind of these people, or minds of people today, it is the same formula.. Human nature, in combination with self-preservation instinct and mass manipulation and lack of empathy for some people far away. Germans after 1918 and in hard life of 1920s economy wanted a strong leader who will bring order and prosperity.. and when more bad things and signs started to show, more dictatorship and more violence and oppression and war propaganda, most people tried to see it as protecting "our own interest and benefit", and of course, there were thousands of Germans who protested Nazi regime and war and they ended up in concentration camps, or killed, either by Gestapo or when sent to war.. Today Russian people who mostly are good and normal humans, also are in the same situation.. This is always the problem when normal people lose influence and power over their leaders or governments... and of course, these normal people again suffer the most..

  • Not every war can create a demographic abyss. My two grandfathers went through the entire war, from beginning to end. Even the Winter and Japanese wars passed. Most of us have no one left who could tell us about the horror of those days... when the world was drowning in blood and tears. Each of the soldiers was someone’s son, brother, husband, father... but not only men, but also women, children, old, disabled were subjected to bayonets... every ruin was a home for someone, a sacred place... memories, their value accumulates over the years. And to destroy it, it only takes a second... it hurts me to look into the faces of the soldiers. I understand that almost none of them returned. I want to cry, I want to scream as hard as I can, my heart aches at the thought of what kind of torment he went through... and he just smiles at me, as if saying, “Don’t see me off with tears. I’m fighting so that you don’t have to, for that so that you don’t cry, for the peaceful sky above your head, for the happiness of you and your loved ones.” I still can’t believe it, that such a war took place... we ourselves did this to each other! Wars can be started for any reason. And the result is always the same - devastation, death, hunger and grief.
