MANOR LORDS | EP06 - NO PAIN NO GRAIN (Early Access Let's Play - Medieval City Builder)

2024 ж. 16 Сәу.
23 191 Рет қаралды

Manor Lords has been my most anticipated city builder since I first stumbled across it in 2020 - the medieval city builder with RTS combat elements, and an economic system that integrates the two closely... what more could I ask for? This series will showcase Manor Lords gameplay while highlighting how to play Manor Lords, providing explanations for various mechanics and gameplay systems. If you like city builders, if you like medieval settings, and if you like tactical battles, I think you might like this series.

  • On the smaller farmfields in this time period. This is true. As there where no pesticides, these fields rely on natural insect balance. The hedges around the fields are the habitats for the predatory insects. These hunters have a limited territory. If the fields get to big these predators won't reach the center of the fields, creating in essence a sanctuary for the crop eating species which in turn will destroy the crops from the center outwards.

    • @@lrmunro Somewhere in the late 90ties i came across this nugget of information. There was an experiment in Great Brittain to prove the possibility to farm without pesticides by scaling down farms. Can't recall all the details, but it blew my mind at the time. Wondering why this simple reality didn't completely transform farming. Mind i was a young wildling at that point not fully versed in the intricacies of capitalism ;)

  • If you have at least 3 fields using crop rotation, you can have at least one fallow field a year and set the sheep to use the fallow field instead of a dedicated pasture for them. This helps the field re-vitalize without wasting space just as an animal pasture.

  • Another comment suggested "eisen", but that's not really how village names work in germany. Frequently there is a toponym at the end. Like -berg (mountain), -hut (-hut is for a village/town that serves as a protective outpost. It's also the name for a sturdy hat/cap), -bach (stream), -ach (river), -dorf (village), -au (-au is a riverbank meadow), -bühl (hill), -hammer (hammer), -graben (trench), +fels (rock), -hain (grove) etc. I'm going to suggest Eisenhut, which is also the german name for a kettle hat (a popular, and cheap, type of helmet).

  • Long time fan, first time commenter PE. The more I see of this game the more I fall in love with the environments, music, animations and overall aesthetic. There is so much potential here, are there bodies of water in the game yet? Would be so cool to see ice fishing in winter, or fishing boats during other seasons. Potentially water mills along rivers/creeks? The only thing that could make your little village more picturesque here would be seeing it's reflection off a calm mountain lake. :)

  • Don't forget to actually activate crop rotation. You can select the three-year-rotation for every field! (very cool feature btw.) And concerning your iron mines: Iron ore is very heavy. It would probably be logical to create tools and weapons from it locally and ship finished products instead of ore. But then again: The know-how for producing weapons and high quality tools was concentrated in regional centers and cities, so both things work. But maybe your new village is a bit like Solingen in Germany and has become an iron-working center? Maybe they attracted a lot of specialists from elsewhere through subsidies?

  • Darn - roads galore! A real village of up to about 200 houses would be along one road, or if it was at a junction, 3-400 houses! I live in one with over a thousand inhabitants and exactly three roads. The church is on the least significant one, right at the edge of the village, with the four pubs (one developed into an inn) spread along the most significant road. People build houses - and especially those they want to trade from - on roads out of preference and only add more roads when the distances become really onerous, or to place a windmill on high ground, which existing roads tend to skirt around. Taverns or pubs were originally one room added to the brewery owner's house, with maybe one in the village becoming an inn, with rooms or even just beds to rent to travellers. The scaling just seems to be off in this, with all the buildings taking up way too much space, and the distance across each territory only being large enough for a village to fill, with no heathland, forest or field space around it. Nearly all mills back when this is set would have been watermills, so villages were on or very close to rivers and streams. Windmills are harder to build and much more expensive to operate, as they had to be able to turn into the wind and had to be away from the watercourse the village would have been sited on, for a water supply and hopefully some fish. So supplying water or ale to the miller and his family was very difficult.

Otherwise you won't have alleys and crossroads and end up with blocky clumps of buildings like on the bottom left housing section. On another note you might want to place army roads that help you speed to the edges of your region

  • IF I'm correct those development points apply individually to each land you control, so the land you're about to claim will have none of that and you can focus on what you want for that land spoecificly. So you can have an apiary and other tipes of tech in other specialized lands as you conquer and grow them. On another topic, I think I saw a tech where you can raise sheep on your fallow fields to increase you fertility and it's something I think is pretty cool now that you actually have fields...

Imagine having to walk from the town to the mining pit, then come bringing all that iron by foot to the town... No. Definetly, put a handful of families with a place to store all that iron... Maybe you put the blacksmith there, but that, I think, is a bit too much. It's a faraway colony and it is very unsafe. You don't want top lose your blacksmith if it gets attacked, right? (I know that won't happen at least until the end of the game but thinking about it in roleplay terms...

Is that true? I do sometimes think you have a lot of houses and families and I'm constantly surprised with how little workforce you have when you need it. IDK, maybe take a look to see if it's true, I'm not sure.

  • Name Suggestion: The new region should be called Raudkaev. Story Time: Some of the settlers to the new territory came from the east. Many did not speak the tongue and one spoke for many. When the lord asked why they came so far they all stated the same reason, raudkaev. The towns name was ultimately decided by this new blood from the east. Raudkaev is Estonian for Iron Pit (Note: I used Google Translate for this so if you find a more accurate translation use that instead).

I'd argue they would use poor soil for other things, like housing, storage, etc. In fact I'd argue it's us that ignore such things these days, with our big machines made for efficiency of human time rather than micromanaging the terrain. Plus we use fertilisers, insecticides, and pesticides to get around fertility issues.

    • I mean more about "extremely hard lines" - we definitely would have a general sense of "these things grow here, these things grow there", but I don't think the hard lines should dictate the boundaries of the fields for the sake of what would probably realistically be "blurred lines"

      @PartyElite@PartyElite29 күн бұрын
    • @@PartyElite I think it comes down to how we're imagining it. If we're thinking the infertile areas have different coloured soil, going uphill out of a fertile floodplain, straying closer towards a rocky outcropping, etc. Compared to if we're imagining it as all looking pretty much the same without clear transitions. But your argument certainly does make sense.
