Massive Elephant vs 3 Baby Hippos

Elephants can be grumpy at the best of times and these hippos soon learned that this Ellie was not interested in visitors on his turf…
This footage was taken by Evan Malsbury in the Umfolozi River in South Africa.
Evan told Latestsightings.com: “We were part of an organized tour group that had arranged for a river cruise. There were several other boats on the river, nothing too unusual prior to this sighting, just many hippo groups grazing along the river.
According to the boat driver and the tour director, seeing elephants along the river as part of this cruise was extremely unusual, so everyone on board was jockeying for a better view. This was then that we saw an elephant close to the water’s edge. The elephant was alone for a while before the trio of hippos appeared and this was when the drama was taken up a notch. The hungry the hippos were no match for the elephant but thankfully no one but the tree was hurt.
Apparently, this was rare even for the tour director/cruise driver, it was the most unusual thing seen during our 14 day trip to South Africa. The tour director proposed that the hippos were younger and that they were learning about how to interact with elephants, and that the elephants were just trying to cross the river. It all seemed like a territorial standoff to me though.”

    • The elephant may have been a bit scared of the hippos itself. It may not have seen hippos on land before, so was not sure if they presented a danger or not. Elephants can be very skittish about strange things, hence the common idea of them being afraid of mice. When I was doing elephant rides at a zoo one time a trio of guinea fowl were threatening the ride elephant, which had children on her back. I think the fowl had their nest near by. They got to about ten feet from the elephant and wouldn't stop squawking and rustling their feathers. The elephant was balking and starting to turn away from her path, so I had to chase the fowl off or the kids on the elephant's back could have been in danger of falling off or being on a runaway elephant. Once an elephant starts running away she's pretty hard to stop.

  • Amazes me at the power of elephants, especially those massive bulls. Used to watch live safaris here on KZhead and they'd easily knock over trees a big bulldozer or excavator couldn't budge. Amazing and beautiful beings.

    • @Nicholas Smith what kind of whale? Sperm Whale? You're going to have get chewed up before you enter the stomach. Blue Whale? You'll have to go through stomach after stomach, first stomach will already have you looking like you're inbred. Killer Whale? Not exactly a whale but an Orca.

      @allninelivez7631@allninelivez76313 жыл бұрын
