Super Bowl XLII is widely regarded as one of greatest upsets in NFL history. The Patriots set numerous offensive records while going undefeated throughout the season, whereas the Giants were 10-6 and looked like a team marked with inconsistency. However, the Giants elite pass rush and uncanny play from quarterback Eli Manning would prove to be enough to defeat the Patriots in one of the most memorable Super Bowls of all time.

  • My Uncle was murdered on December 5th 2007, he was such a huge Giants fan that we buried him with his Eli Jersey in his casket. I'll always remember my Grandmother saying a few days later that she felt the Giants were gonna make it to the super bowl and win because they had an angel with them. I'm not a Giants fan (SKOL Vikings!) But on this night it was one of the greatest sports moments in my life and I'll always be thankful to this team for the joy they brought my family during our hard time.

All the build-up, all the focus on the Patriots trying to complete the 'perfect' 19-0 season, the Giants being huge underdogs although I had a feeling they could at least make things interesting perhaps and not get run over like some 'experts' were predicting. It was a low-scoring defensive struggle but they saved the best for last. The back-n'-forth momentum in the 4th quarter, the Patriots almost looking like they HAD completed the season of perfection, but then the miraculous catch by Tyree that kept their final drive intact, & then the Giants' D making the final stop to complete the upset. To this DAY I still get goosebumps watching these replays again.

Sure, later in his career he struggled, but yet you still expected him to lead the team just because of his previous successes. And NOBODY can take away those SB rings or the SB MVPs from Eli. Two other teams went 18-1 before the 2007 New England Patriots in the 1984 San Francisco 49ers and the 1985 Chicago Bears. • This is the game where the Patriots put the Miami Dolphins undefeated talk to rest. After this game majority of those Dolphins stopped celebrating including Coach Shula, that they were the only undefeated team. Just a couple still celebrate, those few just can’t face the truth. The Patriots went on still to reach the point of 18-0 passing the Dolphins 17-0. The Patriots had to play 2 more games than the Dolphins did and still passed them. The Patriots are now the only NFL team to reach a 18-0 record. Pats lost the Super Bowl but it took a miracle catch to finally beat them and for Patriot Nation that’s fine. That it took a miracle to beat them. “ it is what it is” The Patriots would go one to 6 more Super Bowls and winning 3 of them. Cementing the NFLs only 20yr DYNASTY. Most dynasty’s during the SB ERA last just about 5yrs. The Patriots from 2001 to 2019 went to 9 Super Bowls and winning 6 of them. The averages going to a SB every other year.

  • Talk about a team that had tons of grit. The 07 Giants are easily one of the grittiest teams to ever win a Super Bowl. Just the path to here for them was epic: They got into the playoffs via the Wild Card because of their 10-6 record, they had to play the Bucs in Tampa for the WC, then they had to face the Cowboys in Dallas in the divisional round to advance, then they had to play the Packers in Green Bay for the NFC Championship game, in what turned into the second coldest NFL game in history (the 1967 ‘Ice Bowl’ was colder) that went into overtime, mind you! And they still weren’t done. Then they had to face that juggernaut 18-0 Patriots team in the Super Bowl. And they beat them! This game alone is why Eli Manning, Michael Strahan, and David Tyree should be a lock for the Hall Of Fame.

  • Bradys career is truly indescribable. The sequence of events that had to take place for him to lose this might rival lottery odds. The barely first down on 4th by Jacobs, the missed interceptin by Samuel. The near sack of Eli a couple times on the Tyree catch then the Tyree catch itself, then the 3rd and 11 to smith, then the TD by Plaxico, then stopping Brady. Almost a decade later, Brady made this Giants sequence of events look probable compared to the 28-3 comeback against Atlanta in which literally like fifteen 50/50 plays in a row had to fall the Pats way for them to win. Its like Brady loses sb he is supposed to win and wins the ones he is suposed to lose. What a career

    @mellis9729@mellis97292 жыл бұрын
    • How about the sequence of events that put him in a position to win??? Giants driving for another score in the first half, Eli throws a pass right to Smith, it bounces off his hands and winds up in Harrisons hands?? Took a minimum of 3 points off the board for the Giants. Then after the Giant D stops the Pats with Giants leading 10-7 Eli has Plaxico wide open with not a Pat within 10 yards and overthrows him? Took time and a first down off the board and maybe another score? Finally Giants force a punt, then stupidly don't get all their players off the field and resulting penalty gives the ball back to the Pats? Both teams got breaks that day, Pat fans just want everyone to focus on the ones that went Giants way. Giants completely outplayed the Pats that day, that's why they won.

    • MrBaddog7676 Actually, not as what you might think. Although that was a big 3rd down to convert, giants were in a situation in which many people call "4 down territory" which means you have 4 downs because you have to go for the score. That's why 3rd downs lose there importance on game winning drive where you have to score.

      @russelllee4627@russelllee46277 жыл бұрын
    • yeah but do you really want to see Eli and the Giants have to convert on a 4th and 11 against that Patriots defense? It becomes one single long shot play for all the marbles. We know the 3rd and 11 wasn't do or die, it was just closing in on do-or-die. 3rd and 11 is still tough. Plus, the Giants had no timeouts by then, so the fact that Smith got the 1st down and then got out of bounds, ASAP is huge. If he catches it inbounds, the Giants have to race to the line to stop the clock or run a play and lose precious seconds/downs.

However, I think it would be fair to say Eli Manning was lucky on that last drive. It wasnt just 1 or 2 things,and it wasnt just the Tyree catch (which isnt made on 8 out of 10 times) and it wasnt just Eli escaping a sack (not 1 of Eli's strengths)- it was also that he should have been picked twice on that drive, and 2 other passes should/could have been picked. (and in addition to those 6, throw in as a cherry on the top the no holding called on the Tyree play, and Eli scrambles in that last drive, gets tackled from behind and though the ball is loose, he somehow doesnt fumble)😎

    • Trust me, I was the happiest during this Super Bowl. It was bitter-sweet considering that our division rival had to win, but it was more sweet considering that the Giants prevented the bastards from going to an undeserving undefeated season.

  • People saying skip to 4th quarter, Why? I saw a beast defense after that first allowed TD by Pats. 4 quarters of pure hell unleashed to who some consider the best offense of all time. Giants brought there A game that day, when it all mattered.

    • Veron Budhia can't be the best offense ever when only 1 lineman was a pro bowler. Brady was godly that year but Maroney, Kyle Brady, Steve Neal, Nick Kaczur, and Dan Koppen were all subpar players starting on that team.

    • also brady had many opportunities to hit open receivers all game, but he couldnt make the throws he's used to because he was worried of the pressure.

    • The o-line having a bunch of pro bowlers doesnt determine whether or not the team is great offensively.They had Brady,Moss and Welker and set all kinds of offensive records that year. The Pats were arguably the greatest offensive team ever and the Giants defeated them. Giants get all the props!!

    • You Pats fans should know from experience that nothing matters if you can't win the last game of the year. Like the Rams' Adam Timmerman said after their upset in Super Bowl 36, "doesn't matter what we did earlier, our entire season was a waste."

  • Bill Belichek had a chance to show some class by staying on the field through the last play and then walking over to Tom Coughlin and shaking his hand. Instead. he went into the tunnel before the game ended.
