10 Rare Diseases That Turn People Into Superheroes

People tend to associate an illness with something unpleasant and often dangerous, and they have their reasons to think so. But there are some diseases which, unlike a common cold, look like superpowers. At least at first sight.
In this video, you will get acquainted with some of them. These rare diseases not only leave scientists confused but also make their carriers similar to superheroes!
Have you caught a cold? Oh, how unlucky! All these nasty symptoms again: a runny nose, non-stop coughing, and also, it hurts to eat! But you know what? Quit nagging! Your illness will pass in (about) a week. But imagine the life of those who suffer from chronic diseases!
TIMESTAMPS
Super memory 1:06
Insensibility to pain 2:28
Abilities to literally anything 3:47
Insensitivity to cold 5:01
The complete absence of fear 5:58

Stone Man Syndrome 9:38
Werewolf Syndrome 10:20
Foreign accent syndrome 11:21
SUMMARY
- This condition is called hyperthymesia - a disruption of memory which causes a person to remember all the events of their life down to every last detail. There are just about 60 people in the world who have been diagnosed with such a unique disease.
- In-born analgesia - that's a scientific name of the condition when a person doesn't feel pain. Like, at all. There is a surprising fact to think about: despite the rareness of this disease, as many as 40 cases of it have been registered in one of the villages in Sweden.
- Savant syndrome is a rare condition which might be typical for people with developmental disorders, such as autism or Asperger's syndrome. Patients with such condition are extremely talented in music, drawing and painting, calculations, cartography, and constructing 3D models.
- Besides people who don't react to pain, there are those who are indifferent to cold. A vivid example is Wim Hof - a man from the Netherlands who brought doctors to their wit's end. The thing is Wim is able to stand very low temperatures. He managed to spend 120 minutes in a pipe with freezing water and ice, has climbed to the top of Mont Blanc wearing shorts (and his pen), and even swims under the ice of frozen lakes and rivers.
- Urbach-Wiethe disease is a rare genetic disorder which leads to the complete lack of fear. Only 300 cases are known, and a quarter of them have been registered in South Africa.
- Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia. People suffering from this condition frequently have eerily pointed teeth, therefore, looking similar to the legendary blood-feeding creatures from horror films. People with more prominent symptoms of this illness are extremely thin and pale; their eyes are outlined with dark circles.
- Polymelia is a strange disorder. People suffering from it are born with an unusual number of limbs. In some cases, these limbs are pretty useful, in others they are non-functioning.
- This syndrome is genetic, what is more, it progresses throughout life. People with such a disease have the soft tissues of their bodies turning into bone. The mutation of the ACVR1 gene responsible for the development of different tissues of the human body leads to terrible consequences.
- The hair growth of such people is abnormal. All their bodies are covered with thick hair, it grows, long and lush, even on their faces. The reason for this condition which has gained the nickname "werewolf syndrome" is most likely to be the genetic mutation.
- Foreign accent syndrome. The most common reason for this condition is a head injury or a stroke. The person with this condition changes the way they place their tongue during speaking. The most effective treatment, in this case, is the speech therapy.
Which disease have you found the most shocking? Have you ever met anybody with the conditions described in the video?

  • Apparently my brother has hyperthymesia. He just recounted the family vacation from 1973 including the day we left, the day we arrived home, what we saw, where we went, who was there, and even that dad mistook someone's driveway for the road on the way home at 3am and he had to back out the camper. If anyone is interested in speaking with him leave me a comment and I will put you in contact with him.

Sources like these exaggerates the condition but it's more of a curse...As it doesn't really help in memory storage by will but rather, it's autobiographical.. which doesn't help the person per se unless to recall moments!

Could post sources if you want but people with Hyperthymesia could only recall dates and events to the detail but can't really memorise what they try to learn by will and it's random! You can't force your brain to memorize as far as Hyperthymesia is concerned tbh...the videos like these exaggerates the potential of this condition! It's more of a curse than a Bane....

  • Hyperthymesia person in a fanfic I have in my headcannon: “I can quote verbatim the dictionary definition of the word ‘forget’ in every English dictionary I’ve ever read, and I’ve read most of them. But I still don’t _understand_ the word, because I’ve never actually _experienced_ it. It’s like a color-blind person knowing that the _words_ ‘red’ and ‘green’ _exist,_ but not what it’s like to _see_ them as drastically different colors. I don’t know what it’s _like_ to _forget_ something, and I never will unless I get Alzheimer’s or some such. The idea of _forgetting_ something frankly _terrifies_ me. How do non-hyperthymesia people deal with having _holes_ in their memories? Holes in their very *lives!?”*

    • I only fit two of them, but pretty sure if tested they would agree. I do the accent thing which sucks because I feel like I'm mocking them. Savant as I can pick up any instrument and be playing along to just about anything within the first few hours at most. Mainly due to the fact I've never tried playing with bows. Within two year's I had learned over 50 separate instruments. Took so long since I had to find them and save to buy them. It all started in middle School after a concussion. I decided to play trumpet, was made first chair, and then any time they need someone for a different instrument it was usually left to me unless I didn't want to as it gets too much to carry when you're playing 5 different things, and even switching throughout. Personally I wish I had the memory one. I've got a pretty good one but I wish it were better, or organized better. I forget things completely until someone will say something the triggers things, but normally it's not important things I can immediately recall, like what someone was talking about, wearing, or whatever from the first time I met them back to before kindergarten.

  • Hi! My name is January. I am in middle school, and I love theater. I have a disorder called “spd” it causes me to have basically, extra senses. I have only 5 senses, just like everyone else, but mine are stronger. It might sound like a superpower, and you might be jealous, but it’s actually not. Because my senses are so strong, I get a sensory overload, in which case my ears ring, I can’t see, and every touch feels like a knife. Because of this, I have to wear headphones and sometimes sunglasses, so this doesn’t happen. I hope this story brings light to sensory-processing-disorder. Edit: it’s chronic. also, it causes no health problems that would be fatal. it can’t cause me any kind of serious problems, but it’s hard to live with.

    @mrsmamalove@mrsmamalove4 жыл бұрын

      @poison213@poison2134 жыл бұрын
    • @@poison213 Well some people are jealous because of superpowers, it is like they want to have a special ability like they watch on some movies but some people might affect their health having this diseases just like headaches. Yet so many comments say “I can pull off a good French accent, so I must have it” And I love how someone can remember a couple of songs by heart and immediately think they have a syndrome that lets them remember anything. Yet they can’t even remember that self-diagnosis does not mean you have it.

  • I have a friend who has hyperthymesia, or, supermemory. You're right, he doesn't like having this because in KZhead he has seen scary videos and facts that are actually true, and hes trying to talk to me to forget it, but he can never forget about this and is LITERALLY BEGGING to get this disease removed. He even remembers things like his first word he ever said in multiple places, the partial lunar eclipse he saw a while ago [like around he was born] and even remembers ALL the questions people asked him. He can recgonise strangers faces he saw, and he remembers so much more, thats the postitve thing he said about this disease.

But because of his ADHD, he doesn't do stuff like normal humans, like, he is scared of when people ask him questions, so he won't answer. So you can see how that might reflect his relationships with people. But, he can act very intelligent. People don't always notice that he is absolutely incredibly talented.
