SUMMARY:
- Never start your request with the words "Could you..." It can cause the other person to subconsciously assume that this is a theoretical question
- If you ever want someone to feel uncomfortable, look at the middle of their forehead during the conversation.
- If someone you're talking to is trying to avoid answering a question, just make a pause in the conversation while still keeping eye contact.
- When asking a question that you want an affirmative answer to, try to nod subtly as you make your request. This trick is often used by restaurants employees to make guests buy more food, and it’s pretty effective!
- If a person is really concentrated on a task (let's say they're in the middle of a serious phone conversation), you can extend your hand to them and get anything they’re holding at the moment.
- If you want somebody to do something for you, casually say how they probably wouldn’t even be able to do it. Most people will try really hard to prove someone wrong when it comes to doubting their capabilities.
- Here’s a good one for negotiations. If you like a person's offer in general but would like to get better conditions, pretend to be a little bit disappointed.
- As soon as your alarm clock goes off, sit up, make two fists, and yell "Yeah!" as if you’re a soccer player who's just scored a goal. It sounds bizarre, but it really does help you easily get out of bed feeling refreshed.
- If a person tries to pull you into an argument or some drama, say something nice to them. The ol’ “kill ‘em with kindness” trick really does stop them in their tracks.
- If you have that one lazy person on your team that slows the whole work process down, don't give them tasks by saying "Do this." It’s better to say "Start with this."
- If someone is staring at you in the subway (happens all-too often, right?), just look at their shoes. Don't give up, keep gazing! It’ll drive them crazy!
- If someone has done something wrong, but you don’t wanna sound too accusing, change the way you construct your sentences.
- If you didn't get a good night's sleep, tell yourself that you did. I know, it sounds like nonsense, but it does work 100% if you say it with meaning!
- People are better at remembering what happened at the beginning and end of the day. As for anything that went on in between, it gets blurry.

    • @Pallavi Dalvi the thing that I said? I was in sales for a large furniture company like 6 years ago and they told us to tell customers “thank you for your patience” instead of “sorry I’m late. “ also why are you typing in all caps and thirsty for likes? I have no interest in thumbs up or thumbs down. My comment was just to pass along what I was taught.

Subconsciously they will quiet down their voice and speak more softly as they attempt to listen to your words. It's like when you turn the volume down on the radio in your car when you are trying to find an address or see something important infront of you. Try it...It Actually Works!

  • Growing up the youngest in my family, I was often ignored, and sadly still am. Whenever I had something I thought was important, but nobody was paying me attention, I would loudly yell 'fine! I won't say it!'. That always got them begging me to say what it was. I would resist for a minute, enjoying the power I suddenly had over their curiosity, then tell them. Worked every time growing up.

  • When you need someone to do something, especially if you have a complaint, in a polite tone, start the conversation with “I have a problem. Can you help me?” This works wonders at the customer service counter. Those poor people are so accustomed to yelling and demands that a polite request for help makes them inclined to give you more than you are entitled to. I did this at an airline counter and got $50 in drink coupons when the only thing I was entitled to was an apology.

  • One of my biggest issues is initiating a conversion with a boss or people that have made me feel uncomfortable in the past. If they come to me...I have no problem talking and usually we both feel better like, why was I even hesitant to talk in the first place. Still working on getting better at this but one thing is for sure... I know I have to keep pushing myself towards those "uncomfortable situations" for me to really grow past this irrational fear many of us have.

  • Another basic psychological technique is, not using the word forget, when asking someone to do something. Instead, say 'remember' to hit that like and subscribe button. The same technique is applied when someone is carrying something with liquid in. They say 'don't spill it'. The word spill is now in their mind. Instead, say, keep it steady, this makes them focus on the steady part.

      @BRIGHTSIDEOFFICIAL@BRIGHTSIDEOFFICIAL5 жыл бұрын
    • I dunno about the "forget" part but I kinda agree with the "spill" thing, if someone told me not to spill something I directly imagine myself spilling it and thus get shaky nerves like I might spill it anytime eventho I have a good grip in it, which sometimes ends up in me taking longer to do something which has a chance of me actually spilling the thing, with the keep "steady" part, I never experienced getting told that when I handle liquids but I have been instructed so for other stuff, and yes, there's still the pressure of actually being steady but I was able to focus on the task more than imagining other stuff

    • There's a similar principle in training. Don't tell employees what not to do, tell them what to do. We avoid saying "no" words. So instead of saying "Don't put the cables on the side of the truck" we say "put the cables on the wall hook." This is also, of course, so they know what TO DO as well. If you were to say "*Don't* put the brushes in the sink" you really haven't told them what to do with the brushes. So they'll probably end up on top of the cabinet. Lol. Similar principle I imagine, though. Maybe.

  • When I’m calling a business, I first introduce myself, then ask, “How are you today?” I normally get a slight pause like, “Did she really just ask me that?” Then, they ask the same in return. I also say their name before I get to the business of the call. It normally makes the rest of the conversation go well. People in customer service deal with rudeness regularly; I like to remind them that they are important and appreciated. This also works in public, especially in places where they wear name tags and you can greet them by their name.

    • Worked in restaurants for 20 yrs. I always told new servers that's the #1 rule to getting better tips. Never say I'm sorry, say I'm on it. Example, I know your food is late. I'm headed back to the kitchen now. If they don't have it ready I'll cook it myself.

      @bdemaree@bdemaree5 жыл бұрын
    • I don't agree with that, by saying "sorry" it acknowledges that you are in the wrong, which is what people want to hear when they're tirelessly waiting for you. Saying "thank you" feels like you are taking and profiting something from them, like their time.

  • If someone is staring at you look away. If they continue, look away again in a more dramatic fashion. You can tell the level of a person’s sensitivity by observing their reaction or lack of it. (IMO) If they are really callous, maybe, you should find a way to move as far away from them as possible. Also, in subways I would find the largest most dependable person to stand near. Sometimes people will think you are together, and leave you alone or be more cautious. Much of this really can thwart stranger danger.

It doesn't really make sense but it usually makes enough sense to get them thinking and you'll have bought yourself a moment to find your footing for an exit--restroom, phone call, etc.

  • I used to get embarrassed when I could see someone staring at me out of my peripheral. I eventually got to the point of where I would stare back and not back down, even if minutes go by, I would stare. Whenever they’d break, I’d continue to stare for a few moments longer, non verbally letting them know that two can play at that game. Sometimes they’ll eventually get a puzzled look on their face and ask me why I’m staring at them, and I’ll normally respond with “You started staring at me first, I assume you have a reason for that.”

  • If you want something from someone else, start bargaining with more then what you want. For example: you need one day off from your job. You ask your boss two days off. He might refuse. You then ask 'how about one day then'? He will be more likely to accept. This is due to the tendency in humans to give something back in return when they are given something. You 'give' your boss one day and he feels like he should give something back., in this case one day off instead of two.

However, two of them could never speak to me without staring directly at my chest, which would rattle me. One guy was bald and the other had a big belly. My much older and wiser girlfriend told me to stare directly at the bald head or the big belly whenever either of these guys talked to me. It worked!!!!! I rattled THEM.......soon they would shift their eyes to mine and within a week or two I had trained them to look at my face and not my chest while speaking to me. It was so liberating and it also resolved this issue without firing a shot.
