Being in competition with two other very sharp individuals and managing to come out on top $80K+ in prize money doesn’t happen by accident or luck. I said she was a fierce competitor, meaning she is self-aware, thinks ahead, maintains focus, and didn’t care about social graces - she was in it to win it. And she did.

I agree with you. It seems stupid to reward someone with a million dollars just for lucking out and picking the right case; a monkey could do that. But you have to know your stuff to be on Jeopardy. You don't win by luck alone...it actually requires much knowledge about various categories. I quit watching Deal or No Deal when it was on the first time around because it's not as interesting (for me anyway) as some other shows, and there are just too darn many commercials on DOND. That show could be made into a 15-minute show without the commercials and delay tactics. I like Howie Mandel, but I'm not a fan of the show. Jeopardy is so much more interesting, but I seldom watch that because I'm not a fan of Alex Trebek because he has a way of trying to make people look stupid when they give a wrong answer. I liked the original host of Jeopardy, Art Fleming, much better. He wasn't overbearing. Alex wants everyone to think he's super smart when he says what the correct answer should be, but anyone can look like that with the answer right in front of his face.

WorshipInTruth Her point was that jeopardy is an unnecessary stickler for perfection. Family Feud for example will accept the answer "hamburger" when "food" is what appears on the board. Any human being who can manage to utter the words "Zelda" (the most common phrasing of the game) clearly knows the answer to the question.

DickJohnson3434 Well, family feud makes no sense at all with some of the stuff they accept. Jeopardy is obviously a lot more academic and demanding, family feud is just for fun. "Zelda" is just one character in the game (not even the main character) the name of the game is not "Zelda".... just as you would not say "Yoshi" when the name of the game is "Yoshi's Island" (as just one example). Sure, they may know the answer, but did they give the answer properly?

I said she was a fierce competitor, meaning she is self-aware, thinks ahead, maintains focus, and didn’t care about social graces - she was in it to win it. And she did.

I agree with you. It seems stupid to reward someone with a million dollars just for lucking out and picking the right case; a monkey could do that. But you have to know your stuff to be on Jeopardy. You don't win by luck alone...it actually requires much knowledge about various categories. I quit watching Deal or No Deal when it was on the first time around because it's not as interesting (for me anyway) as some other shows, and there are just too darn many commercials on DOND. That show could be made into a 15-minute show without the commercials and delay tactics. I like Howie Mandel, but I'm not a fan of the show. Jeopardy is so much more interesting, but I seldom watch that because I'm not a fan of Alex Trebek because he has a way of trying to make people look stupid when they give a wrong answer. I liked the original host of Jeopardy, Art Fleming, much better. He wasn't overbearing. Alex wants everyone to think he's super smart when he says what the correct answer should be, but anyone can look like that with the answer right in front of his face.

WorshipInTruth Her point was that jeopardy is an unnecessary stickler for perfection. Family Feud for example will accept the answer "hamburger" when "food" is what appears on the board. Any human being who can manage to utter the words "Zelda" (the most common phrasing of the game) clearly knows the answer to the question.
DickJohnson3434 Well, family feud makes no sense at all with some of the stuff they accept. Jeopardy is obviously a lot more academic and demanding, family feud is just for fun. "Zelda" is just one character in the game (not even the main character) the name of the game is not "Zelda".... just as you would not say "Yoshi" when the name of the game is "Yoshi's Island" (as just one example). Sure, they may know the answer, but did they give the answer properly?
