State Zero - post apocalyptic short by Andrée Wallin

2015 ж. 3 Мам.
12 936 550 Рет қаралды

In the near future, the capital of Sweden has turned into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. We join four soldiers on a routine mission in ‘Zone 3’, with the assignment to investigate an old surveillance tower that just went offline. That’s the setting in first-time director Andrée Wallin’s short film, who also wrote and production designed it.
Produced by Claire Fleming, the film was shot in London with an international cast, while all exteriors were shot in Stockholm. The VFX is done by Goodbye Kansas (goodbyekansas.com)

  • Thank you everyone for all your comments, support and feedback! It means a lot to us as we continue our jorney with State Zero. When it comes to the lights on their suits - as these soldiers are not facing human enemies they do not need traditional camouflage. Keeping small LED lights on the suits is important for other soldiers to quickly be able to spot their human colleagues if they get attacked. This short film was done on a shoestring budget by a very passionate team and was meant to hopefully spark interest among people online and within the industry and your support so far has been incredible. We believe that there's always more room for immersive post-apocalyptic stories and we're working hard to bring you more State Zero. So stay tuned and once again - thank you for watching!

This spoke moreso I Am Legend and Division to me because of the general thematic elements (a quarantine zone, trained spec ops soldiers with bright orange being a central part of their character, and zombie-esque humanoids that avoid the light and are a result of human experimentation). It isn't because The Division and I Am Legend are "newer" additions to the fiction theatre.

  • The first scene was of an injured or deceased citizen, John Ericsson(Subject #25) being revived and subjected to the “Transformation Protocol” by scientists sanctioned by the State, which was apparently seeking to create either a class of enhanced proles, facile laborers without the intellectual ability to object to heavy or repetitive labor, or a sub-human class, possibly useful as soldiers, who would blindly follow the orders of the State. John Ericsson is dressed in street clothes, and is shown a picture of himself with a woman he is close to. He appears to have been injured and his clothes are disheveled. Because of the posting of photograph of the couple in front of him, it is implied that he was responsible for some harm that has befallen her, perhaps her death, but we aren’t told explicitly. However, the “punishment” is non-judicial, quick and extreme. Whether the other subjects were deceased, or grabbed off the streets or arrested for some social transgression, the end result for them is the Transformation Protocol. We are supposed to assume that some of the surviving subjects of these experiments escaped, joined together and revolted against the State. The State says they are non-human invaders to be eradicated like rats. The soldiers believe this. The returning of the I.D. Bracelet to the surviving soldier was the sending of the message that the “enemy” are basically human, that the State had lied about the origin and nature of the problem, and that the transformation experiments had worked better than the State anticipated. The subjects had gained increased physical strength and sense enhancements, while retaining their basic humanity and their abilities to think, plan and organize. Very well done. Hope we will see more of these. To the producers of State Zero - Watch out for the continuity errors pointed out by others; those errors will diminish the perceived or “internal” credibility of the movies. After all, successful fiction relies on the willing suspension of disbelief (according to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, ca. 1817).

    • I don't think so, I think they put subject #25 into the infected population with control over his mind, yet still infected. He is changing the others. They showed him the picture while injecting him to make his human side trigger his mind to stay intact while the injection took over his body. When confronted he gave the bracelet back to the soldier so that when he reports this situation they will know their vaccine is working.

Probably more so than they were before they were changed...hence the last soldier not being eviscerated and set free. Is it really that hard to be more creative? There must be ways to explore new territory.

They used every tired military-movie cliché in the book, and it _ruined_ this short for me overall. I hope all of the artists move on to excellent creative new products. I hope the writers consider alternate careers.

    • Jeremy Rice Agree in everything except it didn't ruin it for me. Its a budget short, I am willing to look past such things. But yeah next time around don't: -talk about mission briefing at the last sec. Audience doesn't need that much info and its utterly unrealistic. Reads like a video game mission briefing or very clumsy screenwriting. -don't point guns at each others -don't use flashlights and night vision -give the dudes a little edge, cut some eyebrows fame acne scars - something - these pretty boys didn't look like they had seen much. -avoid the cliches like rookie hazing when on a mission or sergeant smoking a cigar (I know he didn't here) This unsolicited bitching aside - a great piece and congrats to everyone involved!

      @axelerat3d@axelerat3d9 жыл бұрын
    • Jeremy Rice Have you ever considered that sometimes the writers just don't want to present some super twist and just want to make a nice simple action sequence? If every writer tried to create the next big twist then shit will get tiring fast. Sometimes you just want to watch a nice simple movie about soldiers fighting monsters and relax. Sometimes you just do not want your brain fucked up.

People loved the stuff. The college I attended had an excellent film department but I folded to pressure and pursued another course. I think about this all the time. You made this 7 years ago and it is incredible; I hope you are still doing it. Ex-military had a few minor issues with tactical stuff but most of their comments about the short itself were very positive. You have a gift, and I hope you are continuing on this path. The Anti Viral shots, the dropping of decoy canisters, the seismic sensor placement... all on a ROUTINE mission. The conflict and resolution are not due to stupid soldiers making a crap ton of mistakes, but due to being simply outmaneuvered by something unexpected. Keep up the solid writing!
