RUIN - An animated short set in a post-apocalyptic universe. It's only a tiny sliver of a much larger story. An Original Project we're developing. it's a big fun sci-fi adventure with a very cool story.

  • Now that's some heavy work, the screenplay, chase, climax, everything was extraordinary, hats off to the director.

    • This isn’t the stuff of full-length movies - or not good ones. The animation work is very good, but the storytelling is very tropey. Life after people, the pursuit, third time’s the charm (with the bombs), stabbing the beast in the brain... it’s all okay, but there’s nothing we haven’t seen in a hundred action films. Short movies should be an opportunity to showcase new ideas, not to play it safe with comfortable and well-worn themes. But oh well, nice visuals.

    • Perhaps, but only to answer the questions it raises. Does Our Hero actually have active nenotech/bloodstream compute? Did it compromise his ability to think about how much more likely that fractured handglass computer would not have been broken if he hadn't kicked the box off a 50-story building instead of just opening the box first? (Or using his superSayen sword to open it?) How long has he had it? Where did he get it? How does he service it? Where does he sleep? What does he eat? Are there more like him? How long ago did catastrophe befall Mankind that put the world in this state, and yet has answers for the previous questions that make sense? Where did he get that ICE bike, and where does he actually get fuel for it? (Abandoned petrol stations would have been looted to extinction shortly after anything other than an engineered bioweapon.) Does anyone (*ANYONE*) actually think that a machine intelligence equipped with PDE cruise missiles and miniguns would miss on its first bullet? Or its second? Or its 300th? Or did anyone misunderstand the homage of the "Cameron Freeway" sign (4:01)? This is a Terminator scenario. (Though in fairness, The Terminator was inspiredby/stolen from the Outer Limits episode "Demon with the Glass Hand.") 30 stories, or so they say.

  • If you freeze-frame the shot in which the transparent tablet computer is displaying records from the Haven NanoSystems event logs, you can read three of the messages. I transcribed them. Here's what they say: --- [Message 211] SUBJECT: VIRUS IMPLANTED PROJECT: GLOVE VIRUS STRAIN SEEMS TO HAVE GRAFTED TO SENSORY SYSTEM. SOME ANOMOLIES [sic] ARE SHOWING. RESOLUTION IS EXCELLENT. SUBJECT APPEARS TO BE HEALING RAPIDLY, SUGGESTING VIRUS IS WORKING AS DESIGNED. [Attached are two photos. One is a close-up of the back of a human hand, with three parallel lines over the knuckles that appear to be incisions. The other is a microscope view of whitish blob that could be a virus.] --- [Message 212] SUBJECT: TEST SUBJECT DECEASED/VIRUS THRIVING ALERT: CONTAINMENT IS NECESSARY SUBJECT'S INFECTION SPREAD TO NERVOUS SYSTEM. VIRUS OVERTAKING LIVING TISSUE. BIO-BALANCE NOT ACHIEVED. ALTHOUGH SUBJECT IS NO LONGER LIVING, VIRUS REMAINS ALIVE. SMALL EXPOSURE TO MEDICAL STAFF. CONTAINMENT IS UNDER WAY. [One photo, showing several people in hazmat suits.] --- [Message 213] SUBJECT: VIRUS CONTAINMENT INEFFECTIVE ALERT: QUARANTINE PUT INTO AFFECT [sic] HAVEN RESEARCH FACILITY IS SHUT DOWN. 20 MILE RADIUS QUARANTINED. CAUSE OF VIRUS SPREAD UNKNOWN. LOCATION OF FACILITY REMOVED FROM ALL DATABASES. SECURITY CLEARANCE 9 ONLY HAVE LONG/LAT COORDINATES. DO NOT APPROACH WITHOUT PROPER HAZMAT. [One image, with caption reading HAVEN FACILTY [sic] B UNDER QUARANTINE. The image is not a photo, but a map showing lakes and roads. A location is marked with a red dot, surrounded by a much larger pink circle (the quarantine zone?)] --- After Message 213, the computer displays the following information: HAVEN RESEARCH FACILITY B UNDER QUARANTINE LATITUDE: 29.473677 LONGITUDE: -81.581383 I checked Google Maps, and that location is in the middle of Como Lake, which is near Pomona Park, Florida. The map displayed with Message 213 appears to match that area, although the red dot is actually in a smaller lake about half a mile northwest of Como Lake. The display switches rapidly from one message to the next, but a box in the upper right corner remains static. The information there is hard to make out, but it appears to read as follows: BAT: 0% LINK: NONE MEM: 87% COMM: RUIN AD DT: 10/28/80 ID: 0P0881JB Pomona Park is a small rural town with a population of about 900 people. Google Street View shows no multistory buildings at all -- certainly not the skyscrapers shown in the opening shots of the film. However, the DT: 10/28/80 suggests that the film takes place no earlier than the year 2080, and possibly much later. The opening shots may depict a city that doesn't even exist today. Alternate theory: The event logs refer to Haven Facility B. Perhaps the skyscraper in the city ruins is Haven Facility A, and Haven Facility B is a lab located near Pomona Park, Florida. The missiles shown in the film appear to be based on the Lockheed Martin Multiple Kill Vehicle. kzhead.info/sun/f6dyZ9uciIGjmYE/bejne.html UPDATE: One of the other commenters accused me of making all of this up. I only wish I were that creative, but it's all there in the video. In case someone else has doubts, I've captured the frames in question. You can see them here: imgur.com/a/deaZnLR UPDATE 2: It's now October 2021. Over two years have passed since I posted my analysis. This week, my phone notified me that I had missed a call from Pomona Park, Florida. (Screen capture: imgur.com/a/SwphARh ) The caller did not leave voicemail, and they didn't call back. I assume that they were trying to sell me an extended warranty for my car, but I suppose it could have been a warning from someone at Haven Nanosystems. I guess I'll never know for sure.

  • I am writing this while watching: Right off the bat, the animation is stunning, the way you portray the ruined city is top rate. I also like how the main character is behaving in such a way as to make the view truly believe that this world he is in is real and he has had to deal with it for a long time. Great work on the weapons, I like how that one grenade from the character failed to work the first time he tried to activate it, like faulty machinery; the contrast of the machine`s weapons working perfectly really set this whole scene on fire! On a scale of one to ten: 9 1⁄2

It's clear that he's been enhanced, genetically or with technological implants. Perhaps he can see in the dark. That would be a useful survival trait in this post-apocalyptic world.

For some reason they can't hit him when they fire their weapons. Big drone can follow him anywhere, but the incredibly simple programming it would take to actually hit him with one bullet, much less a few hundred tries was apparently just left out for no reason at all.

  • Just having some fun with the story: Now, let's see if there's something I can trade for food in the village, he thought. But the first thing to catch his eye wasn't something the folks back home would consider worth anything, just some piece of that damn technology that brought mankind to the edge of extinction. There hadn't been a single successful birth in the last fifteen years... Something made him pick up the device that had miraculously survived the fall. It was one of those InfoPads that were so common before the downfall. He hesitaded before activating it, knowing it would attract a Guard Drone. His curiosity was larger than his fear of some rusty old drones though. He felt the tingling sensation as the NeuroNet activated, which in turn triggered the startup sequence of the Pad. Once the decryption was complete, all he could see was that name: "HAVEN RESEARCH FACILITY B". Oh, the NeuroNet of course pulled the rest of the info off the Pad and into his brain as usual, but he _consciously_ only noticed the name of that place, that everybody said was just a stupid tale to keep people's hopes up. Suddenly he could sense something, or maybe it was the active NeuroNet reacting to the approaching remains of technology as it had been. He rushed to his bike, an almost ancient classic he had found in a museum somewhere. The monstrous engine still looked like the old V2 it had been, but since Controlled Explosion Engines had been forbidden for half a century, some creative museum tech had modified the internals to more modern standards, thus making it usable in parades and such. Too bad the sound module was damaged and stuck in I4 mode... not that it mattered, the engine itself was fully functional. He jumped onto his bike and took off into the labyrinth of flood canals in an attempt to shake off that drone. Haven Research Facility B. This was important. This could save not only his village, but mankind as a whole. They could take back control of those nanobots. They could start reproduce. They could start inhabit the cities again. ...And we could disable those pesky drones, he thought, as it launched its "rattlers".
