  • The line "Devils Never Cry" isn't a remark on Dante's stoicness (at least, in anywhere not DMC3) or how one must be tough, but a statement on the compassion of people, on how it's okay to cry. A person without remorse, or a "devil," would not cry- Therefore, Dante is still human. Or, at least, that's the interpretation I've gone on it. Granted, there could be a lot of ways to read it!

    • It's a fine interpretation, but I'm sure what ABI is getting at is that much of the series post-DMC3 and retroactively didn't quite follow through on that chosen theme on the writer's part. At best, the theme carries over to DMC4 Nero who cries with as much depth and subtlety as a shonen anime protagonist (they knew exactly what they were doing casting JYB as him as well as Stephanie Sheh's Kyrie), even if it's somewhat appropriate for the scenario.

I'll say though, I'm a little sad you didn't go in depth on his different designs through the games, as well as his animations, how good/bad they are, and how they portray his personality and fighting style.

  • It's small, but I do want to point something out here. Dante's guns are generally awful unless using the Gunslinger style. Styles are demonic power. Even the basic act of shooting Ebony & Ivory in Gunslinger turns into a hailstorm of bullets that shreds through healthbars lightning fast. Furthermore, almost every single demon enemy in the entire series is portrayed with a severe lack of skill. Look at every sword wielding enemy that is not either a human or made from a human or someone with human characteristics. Berial, for example, may wield a sword, but uses it with all the finesse of a club, while Credo in the same game has a very rapid, fluid, and graceful style to it. Even Nero, the brute of the playable characters, is shown using his weapon in novel and inventive ways, while Urizen, who is literally inheriting all of Vergil's power, is brutish and relies entirely on overwhelming power with no true grasp of how to use it, which is best shown in his fast, but clumsy melee attacks in the final fight. Attacks that could be utterly devastating if he understood how to thread them together in the same way that Credo, Cavalier Angelo, and Vergil did. Dante's design is that of a human wielding demonic power. Even in 5, his Sin Devil Trigger, while intensely powerful, is prone to leaving him completely open to attack and needs to be managed very carefully lest you get killed for using it. His guns are at their best when he is using them as a conduit for demonic power, and his blades are at their best with the skill and finesse that the demons of the series lack entirely. Even back in 1, the frescos and such showed knights battling demons, showing it had been going on long before Sparda switched sides, and that humanity held its own in spite of the weakness shown physically all through the series. And Sparda himself chose to live basically as a human. Dante's design is the apotheosis of power in the setting, and stands in stark contrast not just to his surroundings, but to the very beliefs of the villains. Vergil wanted power and rejected his humanity, and it only made him weaker in the end. Arkham believed humans were weak, and ended up dead at Lady's hand. And Trish only became more powerful and more capable as the series progressed, and yet is constantly displayed with twin handguns, human weapons, in spite of being purely demonic in nature.

      @lukethespaceman3231@lukethespaceman32312 жыл бұрын
    • Something I saw pointed out on TVTropes that runs parallel to this: particularly in DMC V, but throughout the series, human blood is often used to augment or power demonic rituals and magic. As someone with both human AND demon blood, Dante and Vergil are theoretically all the more powerful BECAUSE they have the power of the human blood in their veins that they can tap into and augment with their demon halves. The fact that they have humanity to tap into literally makes them more powerful, which is further illustrated by how Dante handily beats Urizen even after he eats the qliphoth apple, but fights to a stalemate later when Vergil is whole once again. Hell, Nero who has MORE human blood inside of him, is quite possibly more powerful than Dante by the end of Devil May Cry 5, seeing that he actually beats Vergil and is able to hold back both brothers, who, it should be noted, are in their souped up devil trigger forms at the time, with his new standard-power devil trigger. So, in the world of Devil May Cry, being more in touch with your humanity makes you all the more powerful.

    • It's a pretty consistent thread, yeah. DMC5 makes this clear even in Vergil's theme: "Bury the Light" is a reference to how he believes he must suppress or discard his humanity to obtain power, which of course is also illustrated by him splitting himself into V and Urizen. Contrast with Nero's theme: the line "embrace the darkness that's within me" refers to him accepting his demonic side that he'd been hiding before 4's story kicked off, but he doesn't feel the need to reject his human side in the process. Nero finds power in accepting all of himself, a lesson Vergil is slower to learn.

  • 14:50 - maybe it was exactly _because_ he met Nero. Dante said in DMC5 that he had a suspicion that Nero is Vergil's son when he first saw him. Note that before Nero's Devil Bringer was revealed Dante was *_silent_* and acted more like his DMC1 and 2 self except that little "sword wroom wroom" joke. After that, and especially after seeing _repared_ Yamato in Nero's hand, he returned to his "wacky woohoo" style. Canonically, Demons can sense other demon including the Sparda Bloodline, and that applies to Dante as shown in the Anime. To clear it up for DMC4 Intro:Saw Nero fighting Demons singlehandedly which interested him. Church fight: Testing Nero after seeing his Intro fight, Dante senses Demon power on Nero and curious why he wasn't using it Church fight 2: Dante become curious once Nero shows his Devil Bringer. Ala familiar "stench". Dante Boss fight: Affirmation of his Hunches once he enters with Yamato in hand and resonating with him perfectly. • Also, visually, Vergil adopts V's colors far more in 5 and has a ton of subtle touches to his design through the fight that suggest that he's changed as a person in very significant ways. Even his facial expressions differ between the fight with Dante and Vergil. His expressions are much more pained when fighting Nero even when doing the exact same attacks. With Dante, he's clearly complete absorbed in the fight, to the point where he blurts things out without even thinking only to realize what was said later. Against Nero though, every part of his dialogue suggests he's taking it in the moment, and the fight makes him extremely uncomfortable. And in the end, he loses to someone who grew up as a human, only just acquired the power they had as teenagers, and he is clearly shown as being more skilled than Nero (The buster shows that Vergil can effortlessly open Nero's defense up in a straight clash), and yet Nero can endure an injury that brought Dante to his knees and brings Vergil to his, at least long enough to return the favor. Reading into the visuals and how Vergil reacts, it suggests he finally has some grasp on what's important in the series. Family and humanity.

    • AnemoneMeer You don’t even have to look that deep to see that he’s changed. For one, he no longer wears the permanent icy glare on his face that he’s so known for. He can be seen smirking, smiling, and even chuckling, which you would never catch the old Vergil doing. His general demeanor is also much more relaxed and less uptight than before. He still has a superior air about him, but now he‘s doing things reflecting on the fateful day that Eva was killed, speaking less formally that he usually does (he tells Dante “we got plenty of time), and he even gives Nero one of the only things that he truly cherishes. He’s most definitely not the same Vergil we knew before.

  • Something awesome about the start of DMC 4 is that before the main event of the game even starts, we see Dante looking at Nero who is killing demons in his way to the church, Dante is already interested in this kid, he seems to see something in him, later when the fight in the church starts, Dante is in full DMC 2/Anime mode, killing and doing his job in a souless even brutal way, until Nero challenges him to a fight, after a small skirmish with guns, Dante starts to behave like his DMC 1 version, mocking Nero without saying anything, just small things like reving Rebellion, almost as if just like in DMC 1, Dante is having fun, but doesn't want to fully open up, afraid of getting hurt again, at the end of the fight, when Nero continuisly punches him in the face, Dante starts to Devil Trigger (almost like in the first Vergil fight of DMC 3) and finishes this encounter with Nero being the woohoo pizza funny guy that we know and love, he goes trough a very important personality arc, by fighting with Nero, his nephew, by finding Vergil's son, not only does Dante find out he still has a family, he finds out he has a second chance to do things right, and is only after seeing Nero use the Yamato (meaning that he really is Vergil's son) that Dante goes absolutly insante, being even more woohoo pizza man than before, until at the end of the game, after finally digesting this huge discovery, Dante leaves Fortuna leaving the Yamato to Nero, more chill, and more happy than before, knowing for the first time, all is good in his world. I also love that the first time we hear Dante brake the "Hero that doesn't use bad words rule", is when for the firt time since the dead of his mother, he returns to his childhood home, and finds it in ruins, by the action of his brother

That was until a weaponsmith designed guns that can handle the bullet's full capacity. Thus came Ebony & Ivory. So, in a way, they're both sort of devil arms AND just regular guns (Especially since Dante is capable of just one shotting demons weaker than him with them)

In DMC5 there's a secret photo after S ranking the mission where you have to fight Griffon, Shadow and Nightmare and it's their "final flight" and Dante says his farewells. The image depicts Dante eating a strawberry sundae again, alone and looking pretty depressed. DMC anime Dante was probably where his depression began after losing Vergil, his only remaining family member, again. There's a video on KZhead that's a theory on anime Dante being depressed, and it's very interesting. Spending time alone in bars, his change in attitude, the point towards alchohol in the ending, his attitude and of course the ending itself is weirdly somber for an anime about DMC. So the sundaes could be his coping mechanism whenever he feels down.

In Onimusha Warlords, there was a glitch that was fixed during development that allowed the player to constantly juggle an enemy. Or, perhaps both are right, and OW's glitch was what lead to the Resident Evil with a stylish hero idea having been conceived.

  • The number of people who completely misunderstand the Dino VS Mundus talking scene is infuriating, and I HATE DmC. Thankfully I already wrote a Gamefaqs post about this. - Don't make me do this again because I really don't like DmC. The entire scene was Dante trying to get Mundus angry enough to let his guard down because it was part of Vergil's plan. At first Mundus asks "Why'd you kill my child". Dante goes with silence. Mundus gets up and asks again, clearly annoyed. Dante says "Because you killed my mother". Mundus goes "Oh, revenge" in a tone suggesting "yeahokay, I can see that". Dante sees that it's not working so he quickly jumps to "And it was for freedom", which pisses Mundus off more. Then Mundus goes off on his monologue (which was full of good points I'll add). It literally takes Vergil going "Come on Dante, piss him off" for Dante to drop the "It was for freedom" angle and double down on the Revenge aspect, which he plays up as hard as he can by basically going "I KILLED YOUR KID BECAUSE I COULD AND IT WAS FUN" because he's feeling pressed for time. And thus Mundus gets real mad and the plan continues. TL:DR: He actually TRIED twice to troll Mundus more lowkey in that scene. It didn't work, and he really needed him to go off, so when he failed the first two times (and with some motivation from Vergil) he went "fuck it" and went as extreme as possible. - That Dante actually does fight for freedom though. It's the reason he goes against Vergil at the end of the game, because he thinks people should be free to live their lives the way they want. It's a legitimate core value he has. Pulling that one scene out of context to dump on Dino is a bad look IMO, but now I'm done being pissy over a game I hate, the rest of the video was great.

  • This was a neat character analysis for sure. It's so funny and cool that even after so much time has passed, Dante is still so beloved and iconic. And also nice to see that people by and large didn't discard him for "Dino", he's just way too lovable to let fade away into such a mess of a redesign. Like someone else mentioned, it's clear that with the original Dante, they really wanted to make him standout with genuine character and not just some flashy edgy gimmick which is the downfall of "Dino". Though I still feel like had Dino just been his own character starting his own new series as a spiritual successor towards Devil May Cry, even if he still was an edgelord, we'd have more time to grow to like him if he got a sequel game. The game series could've been called something like "Heaven Against Hell" or something cheesy like that and it could've been Deno's own story to tell. Perhaps I'm being too generous towards him but the design of him wasn't that bad, he just really needed to be his own character. Aside from that though, it's just nice that Dante will forever go down in history as "that" action hero of the 6th generation and hopefully his legacy lives on till the end of the time with the likes of Mario, Pac-Man, and the other icons before him.

He is allegedly a being that's in no way related to humans, so he does not care about them for the majority of the time...that is until the forced ending in which he suddenly finds that he cares and that he will protect humanity from Vergil's tyranny because...the girl? reasons? the plot requires him to? I always thought that the half-human part of Dante was what connected him to the player and pushed him to do good, show empathy and care for his loved ones, whilst Vergil was more in touch with his demonic side, choosing to push everyone away get the strength to both protect himself and never suffer loss again as he did with both his parent.

Their focus might be gameplay, their stories might be crap, but they put a LOT of effort in making their characters charismatic and unique, sometimes to the point of accidentally striking gold. I'm 100% sure that Dante's development was unintentional, but that does not mean they didn't cared for him either, and that already goes a long way to appeal to fans.

Story wise while Dante and Lady's guns aren't overpowered in both in-game text and cutscenes they are shown to be able to take out weak demons in a few shots. Lady moreso than Dante. Ebony and Ivory as also very interesting story wise because with Nell Goldstein being canon they represent a weapon passed to him by a parental figure he looked up too during his early demon hunting years as Tony Redgrave, similar to Rebellion. They are also specially made for him. One is modded for great accuracy and the other for rapid fire. This is because, in the novels which seem to be taken as canon until contradictory to the main games, Dante would tend to break standard fire arms as he could literally fire pistols as if they were full automatic with great precision. The guns are made to further those skills as well as keep up. Moreso they seemed to have been modified further by Dante as in-game text says he can feed some of his demonic power (during his DT) into the bullets. comparing Lady's weapons they seem to be on par if a little standard compared to Dante. Lady is only human and is slower than Dante in firing but makes up in her quantity. None the less she can take out most lesser and standard Demons with little struggle. Presumably guns can reasonably damage most demons as long as the weilder is agile enough to keep up with a Demon.

Cobra is a space pirate, an adventure seeker, flirts with women and most importantly he is classy. He always act classy even in rage. He mostly taunts his enemies to death but never uses swearing. Dante exactly captures that attitude. Even Trish mostly based on Bounty Hunter Jane character from same anime. • 27:09 He was prompted. Mundus asked Dante why he killed his child. And after Dante says freedom Mundus replies with "You seem to have all the freedom you need" causing Dante to reply with "Not my freedom". I understand why people don't like DmC Devil May Cry but that's no excuse to be unfair and deliberately leave out context. That's something CinemaSins would do. I really wish that the video on DmC Devil May Cry we're separate from the rest of the content of the video so I could enjoy it. It wouldn't even be that bad if there weren't so many disingenuous pot shots. If anyone's interested in an actual fair critique of DmC Devil May Cry check out Foxcade's channel. If you have no love for DmC Devil May Cry I believe you'll like his two-part video series on it, which is an extension of his Devil May Cry retrospective series, and if you're a fan of DmC Devil May Cry like I am I believe you'll like it as well.

    • I mean, I just dont see this person caring about other people and their freedom. He can proclaim it all he wants, it doesnt seem to be supported by his actions. He doesnt really interact much with those who's freedom he claims to protect. Feel free to throw at me any clips disproving this, I dont claim to know and remember DmC perfectly.

    • Вад Чернов As much as I like DmC, there are some problems I have with it. But the only humans he really interacts with are either antagonistic towards him (i.e., Soldiers working for Mundus or that bouncer at Devil's Dalliance) or early in the game back when he's still a complete asshole. The scene that really made me realize that he truly has begun caring about others is when Vorgil shoots Lilith. Even thought that was the spawn of Mundus and a potential future enemy, Dante was disgusted that Vergil would kill a child like that, when Dante in the beginning of the game wouldn't have batted an eye. Thought, what this guy is saying is my personal gripe at people taking potshots at DMC with out-of-context scenes. Hell, the infamous "And I've got a bigger dick" line was said by Vorgil, not Dante. But yeah, I would highly recommend Foxcade's DmC Retrospective.

    • @@VadBlackwood While I fully admit that Dante was completely unlikable at the beginning of the game he does change throughout it. The biggest catalyst for that change is his relationship with Kat. After the beginning of the game his standoffish tough guy persona starts to crumble due to his interactions with her. He begins to trust her as they work together and when she reveals her traumatic past of being abused by her adoptive father who was a demon disguised as a human his resolve to free humanity strengthened.

      @Brandon_Powell@Brandon_Powell4 жыл бұрын
    • @@BootsThaRareBirb I think the scene where Vergil shoots Lilith was more about the outcome rather than the act itself. Dante's interactions with Phineas made him understand that there would be consequences to their actions. While he took it seriously Vergil did not. At that point in the story it was becoming clear that Dante actually did want to save humanity while Vergil decided that the means justify the ends which actually makes him more like the original Vergil than people realize. In Devil May Cry 3 Vergil was perfectly willing to subject humanity to the wrath of the demons to further his pursuit of power.

  • if you want, you can still add Dino to that metaphore and talk about how sometimes we get become a version of ourselves we'd never want to be, how we try to change just to appease to people, and how much doing that can corrupt and hurt us, but that, eventually, we get things figure out, no matter how many years pass, you can still get in touch with your true self, and start climbing the road to success again

  • I think that i know where Dante changed from his 1/2/anime self to his 3/4/5 self - It's when he meets nero for the first time, specifically it's the moment when dante sees nero's sword and immitates his bike handle thing with the rebellion. throughout the whole cutscene he was silent, stoic and calculative but i think if anything nero reminded him of virgil (with the whole reflecting each-other's bullets thing) and he finally starts having fun again. oh yeah in that same cutscene he realises that nero's a demon which imo was enough for dante to see him as a mentor to him.
