In this video, we're going to discuss some of the problems that have been reported with the Audi TT. From oil-drinking problems to boot space and gas mileage, there are a lot of things to consider when living with this car.
Despite being known for its performance and reliability, the Audi TT may not be the best choice for everyone. This video is a great way to learn about the problems that people have been reported with this car and decide if it's the right fit for you.
I own the 8J and the 8S. the 8j is a roadster. I've been driving it for 7 years, flawlessly. the 8S for half a year, everything is great. the best cars I've ever had. and there were a few different manufacturers. Absolute purchase recommendation for people who also care for and love their cars...

You are absolutely right. My 2011 burns oil, though not as much as yours, probably 1 litre every 800 miles and it’s got a very good service history. Also, the rear sub frames definitely rust, mine has a hole in one of the rear arms which you can see from the rear of the car if you look underneath - will cost around £750 to fix. There is no real cure for the oil consumption though as quite often the bores get scarred and new piston rings won’t solve it. Very difficult to check when buying a car though.

My mk1 1.8t engine is rock solid, been remapped and at 19 years old it drives amazingly for its age.
The 1.8T is usually really reliable but the mk1 is not the most beautiful car ever to me. Just my own opinion
I've had my 8J for some time now and so far its super reliable as long as you take care of it. Check the usual common faults and do preventative maintenance and you're fine. Only annoying thing is the Auto gearbox, at slow traffic speeds it changes gears at the wrong time usually.
Hi mate thanks for watching! Didn't know about the auto mine is a manual. Yes I did all the preventative maintanance work when I bought the car because it absolutely needed it. Next thing to do is changing the thermostat because it's stuck open and car doesn't get to temperature.
TT maintenance can be very expensive indeed :/. I noticed you used 5w30 oil. Try to use 5w40 it will improve the oil burning problem. My TT has 420.000 km's and barely burns any oil (I did rebuild the engine tho haha)
Hi, thanks for watching. I am using 5-40W from Valvoline but Inused 5-30 this time because I ran out of 5-40 and had that handy since it was sunday everything is closed and the oil level was on the absolute minimum. Is the 420k kms on a petrol or diesel?

@@nagarage13 around 330. New pistons, rings, valves, headgasket, bearings, timing chain and tensioner + belt and waterpump 😅 These engines last a long time if you do the maintenance properly, if you dont, stuff breaks. And it usually gets pretty expensive 🥲

I have this car 2010 8J model. I did 2 things: preventive maintenance + use only 10-60w engine oil. No issue. (Only some light bulbs need replavement now and then)
How often did your bulbs go out?
Don't forget about carbon build up. I did cleaning for mine TT and it was really dirty. Some say it needs to be done every 60k km.

Pistons rings goes out due to lack of maintenance and too long oil change intervals. So if you get good maintained example, all bee good. Mine has 270km on clock and need to add only 400ml oil every 5 thousand kilometres. Change oil every 10k km and all will be good.
I do change it every 10k kms and the car has been maintained regularly so maybe they just go out by nature 💁🏼♂️
A top overhaul should solve the oil consumption issue. Have you considered it?
Of course I have but since It's my daily driver and only car I can't afford to not have it for a day.
Nice car! Can I have a question for you? With 5w40 oil, the oil consumption is the same as 5w30 oil?

How much oil consumption do you have on 5w40 because I want to buy a tt from 2007 and I am worried about oil consumption?
@alinm.2495 right now around half a litre per 2.5k kms but I do push my car before it was a litre per 1k kms. Be prepared to spend some money on maintanance otherwise car was very reliable since Im the owner for 1 year now.

I have a 1.8 and the engine oil is a issue that does frustrate me
Yeah it really gets on my nerves as well never had to open the hood so many time on any car I have owned haha
For clarity, this appears to be a Mk2. As the latest (and final) are Mk4 and yours would need to be about 10 years old, a car that age often has problems, regardless of the make and model.

There is no mk4 TT. There is only mk1, 2, and 3. I think they kind of ruined the looks with the mk3. The 8J (mk2) is the best, especially if you get the RS, in manual. 😉
@@thomasolson8417 I used Mk4 to describe the revisions in 2019. Yes, it was still a Mk3 but its styling did receive noticeable tweaks. As the TT is rumoured to follow the R8 as an electric version, there may still be more of the story to be written. Personally, the Mk3 is my favourite, but each to their own.
@@DarthFectious mk3 never came in a manual. Dealbreaker for me. 😂 I have a 600awhp 2013 TT RS so I'm biased. But I prefer the look of the mk2 because I feel the squared off elements on the mk3 kind of conflict with the body lines.

Anyone considering one of TT or TTS 8J get the TTRS. To replace the thermostat or water pump on these requires disassembly of the drive train.
What do you mean. On a quattro? Or on a fwd?
@@nagarage13 The TT and TTS components are more labor intensive given the design. A good mechanic could maybe replace the thermostat in an hour as it requires removal of the intake air box, alternator, radiator cowl, throttle body assembly, coolant tubes and front coolant pipe. TTRS is a 15 min job. The same goes for the water pump. It requires fewer specialized tools. Moreover you don't have to deal with the mechatronic unit and the multi-clutch in a TTRS. Of course if one invests in the expensive tools needed to lift the car, lift the engine for say the water pump, timing belt on a TT, TTS and they are a DIY those cars make sense. TTRS is the best way to go otherwise given it's less labor intensive especially if one is paying a mechanic to do the work and they plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time.
@mightymulatto3000 yeah but a TTRS also costs 4x more on average than the regular TT so there is this expense.
@@nagarage13 Correct it does indeed cost more; this is exactly why people get rid of them so frequently as they age. Adding $6K for a multi clutch replacement and $4K for the water pump the costs are more than saved when dealing with an honest mechanic on the TTRS platform.
@mightymulatto3000 yeah my water pump plus housing is 40€+labour so not that expensive. I got a manual just because of the mechatronics problems they have.
I’ve got one of the oldest mk1 TT and I’ve had it for over 6yrs and to be truthful it’s been the most reliable car I’ve had and I’ve had a lot, of course you have to service and replace worn parts like any other car. Maybe your model is not as good or you have bad luck with cars and brought a bad one.

You must've purchased a poorly maintained car. I've owned mine for 15 years and the car has been very solid. If you purchased used, some of those issues you experienced may have been things that were not addressed by the previous owner. Overall, it didn't seem like you had any major issues. As for the tires, mine seem to last a very long time and I'm a spirited driver. Also, the car doesn't burn oil like that. Can the TT be pricey to maintain, yes, but the car rarely sees a mechanic. Regular oil changes and the car runs like a champ.

@@nagarage13, I don't think it's common. I've had mine for 15 years. I even did a Stage 1 tune and it doesn't drink oil. I haven't heard other owners mention it either.
@davidfuller7442 I was reading TT and gti forums mk5gti BWA engines have this problem. You might have a different engine in yours.
@@nagarage13 , that's a possibility. I noticed you had an aftermarket air filter. Maybe some mods were done that's causing the oil increase.
@davidfuller7442 the oil consumption was already present when the car was completely stock I just did a stage 1 and intake using 5-40W now instead of 5-30W and it is much better. Audi started recommending 5-40 with these engines now beacuse of this issue.
I own one no issues ,flawless,love it. Still service it at Audi .

Your oil consumption is not usual and suggests you should replace your engine.

@@nagarage13 Probably cheaper to get a used replacement with warranty rather than rebuilding an existing one which may be damaged.
