  • Sounds like he’s taken advantage of your trusting nature, Matt! Sorry to hear this! Once I drove 120 miles to see an E34 525i that was in ‘very good condition’ during the test drive the passenger window dropped into the door, despite the owner trying desperately to hold it in place. Then I went over a speed bump and the boot flung open, the owner got out and tried to lock it closed with the ignition key, which then snapped off, leaving me to walk back to my car! Definitely a lucky escape. A few years later I wanted to buy a 14 year old 170k mile Passat from a dealer. I rang him and said ok it’s 14 years old. What’s broken? And he said the air con, and a rear passenger door doesn’t open/close and the wing is a bit rusty. I turned up, it was exactly as described, it drove nicely and I bought it, and it was my daily for the next 6 years. Why can’t people just be honest?

  • I’m also a MK1 TT owner and looked at a lot of rough examples before buying the one I have. I think the problem is they’ve reached a price bracket where anyone can afford to buy one but then they’re often not maintained like a 20 year car should be and run into the ground. For what’s it’s worth the sills are bolt on and you can get still get them, there are plenty of second hand exhaust systems out there and all of the suspension bushes are relatively cheap. Airbag light are sometimes a result of the connector under the seat being disturbed and may clear with a battery disconnect or a VAG aware diagnostic like VCDS. Maybe you can sell the car on to someone who wants a project and doesn’t mind the time and effort sourcing the parts and then the weekends fitting them. I suspect the previous owner was also aware of these issues and it’s out of order that they didn’t describe the car as it was. Genuinely gutted for you mate as you’re decent honest bloke and you can see this in your videos you post.

    • Agree with your assessment. Another ex-TT owner here (my lovely wee absolutely mint roadster was recently T-boned and killed) it's a shame he picked a wrong 'un, but apart from the paint which is, to be fair, a biggie, I'd be keen to know if he saw any photos before purchase? Dud pixels on the instrument panel - absolutely standard issue and always one to look for, exhaust - it doesn't hang right in the piece (21:25) so an easy spot, suspension - it's a Golf so not difficult to fix (and I'd always put a new one together anyway) one key? not a problem really. Getting hold of parts for a TT is a piece of cake. I know, I've bought most of them! The TT is cheap for a reason, but if you get a decent base unit then it can be made as new fairly easily. I suppose I'm still in the grief stage as mine was a labour of love!

It will cost more in legal steps to get that than actually do the minimum fixes and sell it and take the loss.

He or she may have not known it has been painted from the video the paint looks shiny the wheels were done poorly. Cambelt was done sticker on engine. But did not see the mileage stamp there not about age it'd mileage that matters with cambelts. And no mention of water pump being changed. Changing a waterpump with a camblelt is like changing a role watch battery with the 5th pin of of the strap. With a item that is of lower quality than the original.

  • About 5 years ago I bought my partner an immaculate 2001 1.8T 220 roadster in red with only 40K on the clock. It was always going to do a tiny mileage (we had a "proper" car) anyhow, and it came from a private enthusiast in a smart house with 2 more in the garage. Paid absolutely top whack (can't recall) but it seemed exceptional. In the 2 years we had it, both differential and turbo completely failed along with a bunch of other stuff. I worked out I'd paid £16 per mile in repairs. I said it had to go, and just before we put it up for sale, some little smeg ran a knife up both sides (and it had ALL original paintwork, which looked incredible). Lost thousands on the resale. I wouldn't touch one again with a bargepole no matter how cute they are. Oh, and that respray is laughably awful.

Double shame that it involves a dodgy mk1 Audi TT...I absolutely love this generation - for all its faults and foibles. Unfortunately the majority of mk1's have been thrashed and there are few that are worthy of conserving. This type of car really demands personal inspection/examination, before purchase, however I do believe they will become an iconic classic, so hopefully you can feature one that wasn't a disappointment in the future. • I feel for you Matt. I bought an S40 during lockdown from a dealer, who quite frankly took advantage of the fact it was my first car purchase and sold me a car with a dodgy MOT and didn’t know much about the source of some issues. I spent £2000+ to get the “mystery issues” fixed, and yet never went back to complain to him, felt pointless by then. I took it as lesson learned and I will be as truthful as I can when it comes to time to sell it privately or as part ex. Actually feel sorry for people like this. It has to be a sad life.

    @GregStoneMusic@GregStoneMusic8 ай бұрын
    • So sorry to hear you got stung on your first car purchase. The sad truth is that you need to assess the condition and history of every car you buy, regardless of who you buy it from. Actually I like buying from dealers, they rarely stupidly overprice cars and dealers who make a habit of selling good cars will rarely suddenly sell a dog, it’s less hassle for a quality dealer to either not get involved in dodgy stock or just move them on In the trade if they find they have one. My top tip is to totally avoid any dealer with the word “trade” anywhere in their business name, and never buy from a trader masquerading as a private seller. A private seller will have their name and address on the V5. Remember dodgy people and dodgy cars go together, as do decent cars and decent people.
