  • My cousin and I once visited a friend who raised bees. As we walked by the hives, one stung her on the arm. Our friend took a bottle of ammonia and put it on the sting. She went from tears to smiles almost instantly. And when I lived in AZ and told a neighbor about it, she said that's why they always keep ammonia on hand not only for bees, but also for scorpions.

  • in short: the stinger is a part of their body, and when they sting you, the stinger will stay in and they’ll pretty much fall apart. I pretty much think wasps are immune for this.

  • The most painful sting I ever had was when I was clearing a rubble pile on a farm. I pulled out an old rusty gate from the pile of bricks and concrete and broke open a wasps hive. Instantly the air was filled with angry buzzing yellow and black flying devil's, all intent on inflicting as much pain on me as possible. Instinct took over and I ran like I'd never run before, but this was not fast enough and within seconds I felt the 1st shot of pain on my arm (it was summer and I was wearing just shorts and a t-shirt), I headed for my car and had only suffered half a dozen stings by the time I had my door open. I flung myself in and slammed the door behind me, but 1 last wasp made it onto my flesh. It landed in the waistband of my shorts and got trapped, stinging me over and over at the top of my buttocks, I jumped like I'd been hit with a lightning bolt and crushed the little b@stard to death, but the damage was done. My arse swelled like an over inflated balloon and turned the colour of a ripe cherry. The pain was excruciating, it throbbed and burned and nothing I did would ease it, for hours I couldn't move without almost crying, and for days I couldn't sit properly or sleep on my back. I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone, and steer clear of any situation that could result in a replay of one of the worst times of my life.

  • I find it hard to believe that bees only sting you when you’re threatening them. The first and only time I got stung by a bee I was at a water park with my family and, when I was waiting to go down a slide, my hand was on this plastic wheel behind me. Little did I know a bee had climbed onto my hand and promptly stung me. Suicide? We’ll never know (before you say it was a wasp, the stinger was stuck in my hand afterwards).

    • It could've been a wasp aswell. They seem to be much more hostile at least around where i live. They get angry during the summer and can sting even if you do nothing. Bees however are usually calm as long as you don't do anything to them

  • Wasps are menaces. I remember when I was about 7 years old I was playing in one of those old foldable pools in the front-yard by myself in summer and I will never forget the moment my naive joy was stopped by the sight of the wasp floating right above the water In front of me. At first I tried to go under the water to avoid it but after a while I couldn’t hold my breath anymore so I went up again and the bastard was still there. Then after nearly drowning myself I decided to make a last ditch effort for freedom and run; only for my other foot to get caught on the side of the pool, I skinned my knee. But the worst part was that after all that mental torture the wasp just left me there… it didn’t even sting me. And I’ve never forgotten that day.

  • Congratulations this is a terrific video. Thank you. I’m a relatively new bee keeper. I frequently get stung. Just one or two stings at a time. When you get stung remove the sting by flicking it out with a stiff leaf, a fingernail or a blade for example. That way you don’t accidentally squeeze the venom into yourself. If bees are acting defensively ( some call it aggressively) stay as calm as possible, don’t wave or flap your hands around, walk away from the hive asap. I start singing, it calms me and the bees although I sing badly. Fortunately we don’t have Africanised bees here and my bees have been bred for their gentle natures.

On a funny sidestory, after a visit from a friend where we shared a few glasses of sodas in the yard, I was getting ready to clean up after he left. When I got closer to the table though, I saw tens of bees swarming the glasses. They were likely collecting the sugar from the sodas and didn't leave for a few hours at least.

I was at a park in a pavilion which wasn't full of bees, but as it got hotter and the more sugary stuff melt in the trash cans, the more bees came out. I was just sitting, but moved to cross my legs, not realizing a bee had decided to make my inner thighs his new seat. So, as I closed my legs, the fucker stung me. I mangaged to get down benadryl and we went to the hospital. But after we got home hours later, I had a rebound reaction. *After* the usual time. So I had to go back for a longer monitoring 🤣

  • I’ve been stung by yellowjackets a few times, but never bees. I’ve even picked up wild bees with my bare hands a few times to move them if they were in water or in a spot they’d be stepped on. My parents are first year beekeepers this year, and they have italian honeybees. Their bees are incredibly gentle, to the point where if we’re not opening a hive (which would obviously stress them out without smoke), we can sit right next to the hives with no gear without them getting angry. They just go about their business and we get a close look at them. I’ve even had young worker bees land on my finger and hang out for a little while before buzzing off to get back to work. The only thing they might do is bump into your head if you cross the flight path they use to enter the hive. I’ve done that a couple of times by accident, and apologized to the bee each time lol. Some of Our pets have been stung because they are dumbasses who try to eat the bees, and my mom got stung once because she accidentally stepped on one that was in the grass. I love bees, and its so sad that they die when they sting mammals. Especially now knowing that they have no idea it will kill them :(

  • Years ago, I had a house out in the country in Argyle, Tx, near Denton. There was a tree in my back yard about 20 feet tall that had become overgrown by a wisteria plant. Every Spring, the huge and fragrant purple flowers would attract swarms of massive carpenter bees! While big and scary looking with black, shiny, round abdomens, these bees were completely harmless, so I used to stand right in the midst of the branches of this tree just to feel the creepy feeling of being surrounded by bees flying around me and past my ears with their huge buzzing sound, like little prop engine planes flying by! From childhood I had learned to be terrified by that huge stinging insect sound, so this was kind of an interesting experience to know I was safe but have the feeling of a need to run like hell. I called this the Bee Tree. It was fun also because I was training some video camera operators using the bees. For some reason, one bee would always hover for several seconds right in front of the back door, then it would suddenly fly up over the roof, only to return to that hovering position seconds later. I would have the operators place their cameras in manual focus mode and try to get an in-focus shot of the bee before it could fly up and out of view. Nature's little video trainers!!! It was a lot of fun.

I was terrified and always ran. She told me I should be calm. In my first experience I was, but inside I was dying. I felt a Heat inside of me, because I was struggling so hard to calm. The came close, but did nothing, another time they landed on me, but I stayed very calm. Before even when a Butterfly would land on me I would run for my life. Then I missed my Chance to get a Butterfly sit on me and I was angry and dissapointed after.

I had to walk for approximately 1h with the stinger in my foot (we walked quite far on the shore and had to walk back to our hotel). I caught cellulitis (which started manifesting itself days after the sting) and sprained my ankle for a second time (due to the limping). I will never walk barefoot on a beach again.

After a few seconds it still was hovering there and my poor mom tried to swat it away from me but the wasp thought it was me who swatted at it so it began trying to sting me. I ran down the sidewalk and bolted across the street and I looked behind me while still bolting and it was STILL chasing me. It was persistent like it was determined to sting me but after running for another few seconds it gave up and flew away. My mom said afterwards that she saw the wasp chasing me down the street. • I’m deathly allergic to bees. My husband of 20 years is an amateur bee keeper…we have a running joke about how if we were to ever divorce, at least he wouldn’t lose his hives, lol. The good part about having bees so close is that I’ve learned a great deal about bee behaviour & over time it’s assisted in my learning to NOT be so phobic of them, which in turn keeps me much calmer around them and far less likely to be stung. I HAVE asked to be allowed to accompany him whenever he goes to do a hive check, but the answer is always no. For both our safety - and he’s not wrong…if I was to suddenly panic, we’d both end up in deep trouble so I do get his point.

  • I’ve only ever been stung once, by a dead wasp (yes, you read that right.) because it was “wasp season” where I lived and a few of them had found their way into the house. I was about five at the time, and we had a carpet floor. So, as most children with carpet floors did, I ran around the house barefoot- can you see where this is going? All the wasps that had gotten into the house had died, however one in the living room fell onto the floor after it’s death, with the stinger facing up. So, my tiny little feed ran across the house, and right onto the dead wasp- which was hidden in the carpet. Also, once again, I was five, I wasn’t looking where I was going anyways. But the stinger went right into my heel and my mom had to dig it out, it took about an hour because I was screaming, crying, and moving way too much. And ever since then I’ve had a intense fear of wasps. And I’m chill with bees as long as they are about a foot away from me. I just saw some others sharing their sting stories, so I thought I’d join! Edit: before anyone asks, it was a Yellowjacket….wasps are demons

  • When I was 12, my cousins, my brother, I were playing in the trees, behind our house. My oldest cousin pushed me down & I fell on a rotten log that had a bee hive in it. They attacked & I got stung several times. Ever since then I have been extremely allergic not only to be stings, but to honey. I have come close to dying from anaphylaxis close to 10 times. I have got to be very careful with food, anything that has any amount of honey in it could kill me. It's been over 15 years since my last attack. I've always had an EpiPen & they've saved me on more than 1 occassion. The last time I had a reaction, it was caused by 3 bites of a honey ham sandwich. I went fishing with friends that made lunch, ham sandwiches. I took a few bites & my eyes started to itch, almost always the first symptom of a reaction. I asked if the Ham was honey cured, they didn't know. By the time we got to the doctor I was having difficulty breathing. But I was OK. Latter found out, it was honey cured ham. One of the worst things about this allergy is that I used to love honey. One of my favorite breakfasts, as a kid was toast with honey on it. Since then I've been very careful. In 01, I got stung, when I picked up a can of pop & didn't see the bee sitting on it. Same thing happened & my arm swelled up. This is one thing that I hate about summer. At least in the winter I don't have to deal with bugs.

  • I've only been stung by the plague known as wasps, honey bees don't seem to get bothered by me working in the garden near them or even gently picking them up and putting them in a nearby tree.

    • I died medically sue to a stupid wasp. It stung the inside of my mouth, I died in the air ambulance chopper and was thankfully brought back. I now know I'm really allergic to wasps. And I tend to run from them.

  • A honey bees stinger is made up of two barbed lancets, meaning when they sting, the stinger cannot be pulled out again. The stinger is attached to the bees digestive tract, so subsequently the entire digestive system, muscles, and nerves are pulled out, which is what causes the death of the bee. I just explained a whole 19 minute video now like this comment so others can see it

  • The one and hopefully only time I've been stung by a bee was absolutely not my fault! I was in the swimming pool and coming up for air. Reached my hand up and on the concrete edge of the pool while the rest of me was still under the water. Burning pain on my hand. I pulled my hand back in the water immediately, sure enough there was a disembodied bee butt on the webbing between my thumb and pointer finger.

  • 5:03 actually, there is a safe location because the colder it is the less number of bees (just head north)
