Massive wave hits Taxi Boat
Tow-in à Teahupoo. Extreme surf
Teahupoo the most dangerous wave in the world
Spot de surf mythique situé à Tahiti en Polynésie française.
C'est ici que se déroulera l'épreuve de surf pour les Jeux Olympiques de 2024
Tim McKenna was on the boat. You can read his version of what happened on his facebook. / timmckennaphotography
This dude has been doing this for several years. It's only a matter of time before he gets someone killed. It's also dangerous to surfers exiting the barrel at full speed while blinded by the spit. You don't always exit the wave in complete control every time. Give us some space out there so we don't have to dodge boats while navigating one of the most dangerous waves in the world.
no joke! boats get the heck outta the way!
That makes sense that he's done this before, because he was oddly unpanicked after that first wave. Who on earth wouldn't gun it for the horizon after that??? Crazy.
Rude arrogant pricks
@@wrybread a journalist was in that boat and wrote a piece on it for msws Instagram. Apparently there was a jet ski blocking him from gunning it and a guy had almost fallen off on the first wave 🤷
Fucking yes! Absurd dragging around in the exit zones which is very dangerous for collisions. Ain’t good
After reading hundreds of the comments I must put my 2 cents in "that guy piloting that boat is no captain by any stretch of the imagination"
If I put my crew in that position, I'd be ashamed of myself.

Good thing yall stay home and do this activity through KZhead
@@kap1526 Sure about that champ? A lot of us make our living off the ocean. All conditions, crew and vessel comes first. Maybe you don't know about the ocean and what it is to be a skipper?

they are so lucky there wasn't one behind them. I kept watching out back, waiting for them to get pounded. terrifying.
Done. Okay, now ponder lettuce and shrimp 🥬🍤
They would’ve been FUCKED
That's not an accident, that's negligence.
Those jet ski drivers are absolute HEROES!!!
they helped without giving a second thought! true heroes
heroes ? hmmm so what's above?
I’d agree with you buuuuuuuuut the set was over 🤷♂️
I'm glad someone thought to immediately pause the wave machine too or is it automatic for things like that?
Ian garner: getting in the way of the boat from moving to the right of the second set so its nearly thrown over backwards?? Ohh year so stunning brave heroics.. clearly some are in the way and so are the boats, I'm surprised surfers haven't plowed into the jet skies and boats coming out of the barrel
Unfortunately a fatal accident is bound to happen the way things are going. There needs to be more safety requirements and limited taxi boats out there
Thank you Karen
@@robertbiolsi9815 Pointing out a safety concern in pumping Teahupoo with people in the water at all times does not make you a Karen... It makes you logical. Anyone with experience in heavy conditions knows that this is unacceptable, I take it from your mindset that you have no experience.
@@joeboonmusic4004 well said
making people wear life jackets would be a start
yeah bro, let's get politicians involved in literally every human i interaction.
The boat traffic at this place makes humans look like a bunch of fools. There's no way they should be that close to the breaking surf especially at that place!
The Mount Everest of the surfing world... just takes some cash and the right sherpa
The captain of that boat is reckless. No reason to put his passengers in danger like that. They came very close to flipping and had that happened someone could have died. Your number one priority as a captain is the safety of those on board. This captain failed at that and fortunately no one was hurt. Hope this fellow learned a lesson.
So much perspective from someone who wasn't there! Don't know how you do it mate, amazing!
@@simontalbot5879 Someone got ejected from the boat goof.
@@powerboatguy2308 You even know the full story? The captain is a very well known captain, he even puts together the entire safety team of Tahiti. He is one of the most respected guys out there. His job for the last decade is getting sport photographers and sponsors as close to the wave as possible. After the first wave in his video, some one got caught with the wave. He didn;t had his safetyclip on, which you should and have been told to do so. He was trying to figgure out if they could get him. but it was too late. after that he matched the speed of the wave perfectly and put his boat in the right angle. That is why the boat didn't flip over. These photographers want to gget as close as possible and they come there for the danger. once in a while something can go wrong. Deal with it and go sit back on your sofa and let them do their jobs and surf.
@@POLPO_WOOD Yeah, I know someone got thrown out of the boat, others could have gotten seriously injured. There are a lot "cautious" captains at the bottom of the sea out there. Quit trying to rationalize this, guy did not know what he was doing.
@@powerboatguy2308 he has been doing this for 30 years. Most respected shipper out there. KZhead guy says: “he has no idea what he is doing”…… stop talking
The guy driving that boat always insists on sitting too close for some reason. He's not very smart. Eventually someone is going to get hurt or worse.
I can only think how beautiful was everyone going in to help, not thinking in helping, just helping without thinking. Kudos to everyone involved and a little bit more attention for the captain.
Well, I can only think how stupid were the people PAYING to put themselves in that position. I’d have let them drown thereby strengthening the gene pool.
Beyond lucky there was no follow up wave, that would of been a nightmare with how shallow that reef is. What a fuck wit
The reef is hardly an issue for the people on the boat, they couldn't survive the hold down of ONE of those waves.
That's not a taxi boat. Those boats (they are at least 3 on the video) offer rides for tourists so they can take a picture from a surfers perspective. The orange boat has the prime spot other two had to settle for a secondary location. And that's why he doesn't get out of the way for the final wave he is going for the same angle he got @0:09 (and is hard to focus when you eating a fish burrito like the captain of the boat was)
That Boat Driver Definitely Not Paying attention!! This is a Deadly Wave especially at this Size! Its a Miracle No one was injured!
I was literally thinking a few days ago while watching Nathan Florence’s latest video how close all the boats where and how entangled they all are , even if you wanted to move you’d be crashing into another boat. a few photos isn’t worth a 30 foot drop onto the reef when those boats back flip over the falls
I watched that too
Same, love Nate🌈
I was waiting for the footage of this in his vid! MAybe it's in the next one
Crazy at :23 seconds. Looks like the guy on the back of the boat jumps right into the propellers. Also RIP to le baguette.

"Load a boat with 20 other people and do a 90 degrees manouver pointing the sun? Ok, doable, lets go for it!"
What I react to is that those on board the boat do not wear life jackets!
That whole scene is so sad on every level
The slow-motion video of the ride over the 2nd wave was amazing. It was very close to vertical. Don't know how anyone stayed in the boat at that angle.
2 guys in the back dove out before the wave hit
@@knoz5688 I think the guy who is in the back that jumps just before the wave hits was swept by the wave, there is no sign of him after.
@@halim42 Yoooo I saw that he tried to jump through. bro mustve gone over the falls!! fucking terrifying that wave was monstrous
It almost fell backwards. If that happened, people could have died or suffered severe injuries.
@@halim42 Dude diving out the back is lucky not to get hit by propellers.
That was awesome of everybody getting in there and grabbing folks that fell out! Sometimes these types of things don’t always work out! It might be hard to tell from the video but that’s a pretty good size boat pack full of people.
I counted 10- before they went overboard. If he’s not over capacity he’s right at it. I’ve had my kids bounced around on boats by some reckless captains. Sometimes the crew needs to speak up. That should never be ‘business as usual’. Apparently he flirts with disaster regularly. With a charter. It’s one thing of you’re solo. Being responsible for a full charter is another thing entirely. Sometimes ‘experience’ just means you’ve done the wrong thing over and over again.
I am surprised this doesn’t happen more often with so many taxis, boats, and onlookers crowding the shoulder region.
Same here this surfing spot they all sit in same spot at end of wave break just hanging out and this wave isn't Amy ordinary wave it basically breaks with a wall of ocean water ontop heaviest wave there is I dunno how ppl even wipe out and survive being thrown under that amount of water
@@patricklaurojr7427 nah u have to exit chope earlier than the boats cus of shallow west reef, so they're bailing before all the boats anyways
With no regard for the safety and well-being of his crew and passengers, and not immediately attending to the aid of those that went overboard thereafter, regardless of the lull after that 2nd wave, and thank God for that because this clear shows that captain’s incapacitated ability to perform any significance in a really dangerous situation. He looked like a deer frozen in headlights going up the wall of that wave and then coming down from it not knowing what to do next. Good teamwork on the fleet of jet skis to the rescue! 🙏

Whoever was driving that boat was negligent at best!
Eric, fisherman by trade, is the most respected, experienced waterman at Teahupoo and the Fenua Aihere area. His positioning, understanding of the Teahupoo channel and the way the wave breaks is unparalleled. Most of the photos and footage that has been seen worldwide has been shot thanks to Eric’s expertise. He is Teahupoo’s version of Fred North and his helicopter, Brian Keaulana and his jet ski, etc

Bear in mind that this boat is in Tahiti--an inboard from the 70s or 80s with a motor that may well be cobbled together with inumerable miracles and found objects. This driver may also spend every waking hour for the last 20 years on this boat. Easy on the judgement of driver skills. extremely unlikely unless someone tries something like this deeper, boats always sit in the channel and the surfers pull out right before it closes out on the inside usually

Half the dudes in the boat are pro surfers.. sure they have had their fair share of tpoo beat downs :D
I'm in complete disbelief of the level of unawareness of Mr. Captain KOOK . Whoever is trying to spread false information about how he was put in that position is completely and absoultely blind! Knowing the day's conditions, those were 2 inside double up waves, which can even be more dangerous than set waves; usually unrideable, closing out. If this KOOK has been doing this for years, as stated by many surfers and crew alike; you can also look at a couple more videos from years back and see for yourself.. Anyways, this guy was absolutely in the worst spot by choice, having had the chance TGTFO after he was awfully close to that first wave [camera boat is awfully close, too] and the KOOK makes it!! then you can see his true intentions when he didnt even care to assess passenger situation before 2nd wave hits. He then gave a tiny fuck about his F sandwich flying out. Then even after that, he had no intention of picking anyone up from the water 🙄 and the people falling out also preferred the jetskies over the AH that just nearly killed them. The only dude semi stoked was the guy who was able to duckdive successfully on that massive wall. Hate aside, the famous red jet ski gets out the way with visibly enough time for this guy to be able to make it. Jet ski was probably getting ready to rescue some peeps if he knows CapnKook. Also, there was one guy who was apparently taken by the waves lip into the closeout explosion, did anyone else catch that?
Well to be fair he was on the razor edge of going over the falls. The best thing for him to do is blast out of there. It's better for the jet ski guys to grab the guys that fell over. Of course, he shouldn't park a boat in the impact zone either. That's extremely dangerous for everyone there.
I would just like to make one correction to your assessment which is spot on. That guy piloting that boat is not a captain but a fool with others lives in his hands.
It's possibile to work there and don't see a set is coming??
Noticed that i single person had a life jacket. Next time, you might not get this lucky....
The boaters over there are always pushing the limits on that wave...I would have bailed off that thing..
that dude was lucky that the boat recovered after allmost turning backwards with catastrofic consequences. stay away from the incoming set timing is crucial
How that BOAT didn't CAPSIZED is beyond me! That thing went straight VERTICAL!
As long as the folks on the boat signed the waiver I guess it’s ok to get that close. Capsizing would have been painful regardless.
Imagine if there was another wave in that set.
One of these days something bad is gonna happen there
I'm wondering how a fully loaded boat hasnt gone over the falls already, a miracle.
You men someone will be hurt o f killed?
Talk about a life changing moment. Thank God for surf patrol!! I'm glad they're safe. Beefsteak sicker!!
Nice footage
Maybe they’re gonna have to regulate how many spectators can be out there on huge days. It’s a matter of time when one of these boats full of people goes over the falls or gets stuck in the impact zone.
Let's be honest... That's the footage we're all waiting for.

These boats and spectators are way too close. Surfers always having to dodge them when they pull out after a ride. They need to fekk off seriously.
Seems like there are more boats at Teahupoo than surfers these days.
That looks like fun! I wanna be on a small boat and get thrown overboard by a killer wave.

I’ve been dismissed as a crank when I’ve expressed my disbelief about these chaotic boats in the Channel at Teahpoo. They’re going to have to define a safe area. Cameras can zoom in and rubber necks don’t need to be that close.
I can’t believe they don’t already have something in place as far as where boats should or shouldn’t be. Hell the wave is scary enough u don’t need to add dodging boats to the list.
Nothing has happened, its safe and fun
From a photography point of view, that's not correct. A zoom in isn't the same photo. The closer you get, the wider the angle of the lens you can use. Due to how perspective works, you don't get the same photo when zooming in. It will be much less impressive, as longer lenses compress everything ...

It won't belong before one of those boats gets caught inside of a sneaker set. This is when the second wave is running really close to the first wave but the sneaky wave is way bigger and this wave catches all the boats on the inside. I hope all the passengers have their life vest on.

Surprised to see many of them don’t wear any life vest. You are on a boat at one of the most dangerous surfing spots in the world, even if you are an olympic swimmer, you should wear one here.
On thé slow motion we see that someone at the back was thrown out and fallen inside the wave! Had he survived?
Yes, he's ok
Do you have to pay extra to go vertical!?
Just jungle rot in the captain's brain..
You are the captain of your vessel and responsible for its safe operation at all times. Your crew and passengers look to you for your good judgment as to their safety. You should have your ticket taken, and never be allowed to pilot a vessel again.
Never be able to drive a boat again? I think you've gone "overboard" haha
This guy has been driving surfers and surf photographers out to this break for years. They dont get any more experienced than this guy. Apparently the reason he got caught out was a ski blocking him from gunning it further into the channel. Least he didnt panic. could have been alot worse
