Plus when he jumped off the engine turned off.

  • Can anybody with good surfing experience tell me how dangerous is riding such big waves? And what do they once they caught in the tunnel / wave?

    @goandriy@goandriy6 жыл бұрын
    • Well, if you haven't drowned yourself yet, I can fill you in. Big wave surfing can kill you. Even extremely fit, talented, experienced surfers & watermen have paddled out & never come back in. Add to that the size, speed, & wave, the bottom, depth the wave is breaking in, risk of sharks at some breaks, and crowds of inexperienced surfers (kooks) & it gets even more dangerous. There are many safety tools available today & that didn't exist when I learned in the 70's. There are helmets, pads, co2 cartridge life vests, jet ski's, wetsuits - plus gloves, hoods & booties. But just because you have all that, it doesn't mean nothing can happen to you. Paddling into waves & being towed into them are two completely different ways of riding the wave & even different size boards are used. Towing in just gives you more speed and places you onto the wave in spots without having to paddle for it and stand up. I suggest learning to surf, at a sand bottom beach break, that isn't crowded at first. After you're comfortable going out, by yourself, and getting in safely you can try larger & larger waves. You will wipeout while learning, and that's an important part of the process. If you aren't laughing after a good wipeout, you are in over your head. Tube riding is only one part of surfing. Changing your foot placement & weight distribution makes you go faster/slower and turn left & right. Every wave breaks differently, so you need to be able to estimate what the wave is about to do, while standing and riding. You choose a "line" that gets you safely to the end of the wave but you must adjust as the wave changes. And even if you get all that down, and have a ton of experience, the best board, local knowledge, a great crew of friends out with you and you do everything right........well, sometimes Mother Nature reminds you she's in charge & wipes you out. I wanted to surf since I was a little kid, At 16, I bought my first board & the first day I wiped out & caught 16 stitches in my face & eyelid. I asked the Doc, "When can I go back in the ocean??" I don't want to scare you away from surfing, I love it more than almost anything. It's a lifestyle, not just a sport. If you have access to the ocean, see if there is anyone there that can teach you how. A surf school, or lessons maybe. But leave the tow-in Tasmanian sickness to those with a little more experience. Most of all respect the ocean, beach, & your fellow surfers & you will have more fun.
