Three astronomers go in search of a meteorite that fell somewhere in the British wilderness. Soon they find out that the visitor from outer space is not a meteorite, but an alien ship and a harbinger of an alien invasion. Friends find themselves in the epicenter of hostilities, where on the one hand - the Earth troops, and on the other - the fighting machines of the Martians.

  • This really is a near-exact retelling of the original novel "War of the Worlds", and like with that, Ben informs them that the military has been completely exterminated in mere *days* at most; they could only put up a measily few days combat before they were completely eradicated in the course of the battle. In short, their entire nation's collapsed completely, any government officers who have survived have committed cowardice; those that fulfilled their duty are long-dead, or simply eaten by the Martians; and the ones who resist the aliens will inevitably meet the same fate... they have never had any chance from the start.

    • The tripods from the radio play and original book didn't have shields either - consider that Welles wrote the book between 1895 and 1897, but the first mention of a forcefield or similar device didn't occur until 1931. Instead, the aliens relied on a much more understandable _(for the general public of the day)_ form of protection: Armour. Consider how destructive a 20mm cannon was against a big tank in WWII _(AArghh! Tony's head just turned in to pink mist, there's a fist sized hole where Dave's face should be, and we're on fire!)_ compared to what that same cannon shout would do to a slab of Chobham _(fcuk sake, I've repainted the turret twice this month already, someone else can do it this time)._ The grenade thing is glaringly obvious: go and get two balloons, make sure they're identical, and lay them flat on your desk, uninflated. Pick one up, and destroy it by blowing _in to the inside_ of it, count how many puffs it takes you. Now destroy the other one by blowing _on the outside_ of it, and count how many puffs _that_ takes, and compare the two.

  • It's good to see that H.G. Wells' classic SF story is still inspiring folk to adapt it. Without seeing the whole thing, I don't know the details, but in the main, this one looks at least half decent. OK, so it doesn't follow the actual story very closely, but then, it has been modernised. The protagonist in Wells' original tale has been replaced by three students, you still have the doctor, the religious man ( a curate in the book) and a military man ( who suffered a deep inferiority complex when he saw what was happening). Yet, the ships, tripods and red weed come from Mars, the Martians are octopus like, and perhaps best of all, having brought at least London, if not the world, to its knees, the Martians die from all the various bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that fill our planet alongside us... with strong hints that, given time, the Martians might be able to adapt to them! A film doesn't have to be a big budget blockbuster to be good- think 'Monsters'. Don't get me wrong, because I loved Spielberg's adaptation,, but some adaptations work better than others. The latest offering from the BBC had good creatures and special effects, but made some awful errors. Whilst placing it in its period setting (the Victorian era) it tried to 'update' things by turning the protagonist into an unmarried mother, and getting all moralistic on certain topics, which wouldn't have been seen as an issue then. The result was stodgy and mostly unappealing even to die hard SF fans. There was another adaptation that came out just afterward, but whilst I've heard about it, I haven't seen it or heard very much about it, so wonder how well it did. This adaptation, however, seems to have taken the basic elements of the story and filled the rest in with its own ideas. It looks like it didn't go overboard trying to add anything extra, and though set in a modern day, didn't try to add on modern moral values, at least that I can see. They say less is more, and in this instance, it seems they got it just about right!

    • @@SirKolass It's in no way a ripoff of the goofy 2005 movie, don't get me wrong 2005 is better in terms of well effects and i guess designs though i didn't find the tripods here that shitty but i believe the reason its half decent as some say is because of how faithful it is to the book which is better then both movies lol.

  • After all that time, i still ask myself, why have they never tried to make the Machines stumble?! they got 3 Legs, and are definitely not capable of walking on 2 Legs alone... And why have they never considered Mines, if they can blow them up from "inside their Shields"?

    @petervonfroster8i@petervonfroster8i9 ай бұрын
    • Yeah; in the British teleseries "The Tripods" they brought down a tripod just by sabotaging one of its legs and making it fall down. Anything that walks can be brought down with any number of traps. But that ignores the basic plot device of Martians on tripods, like Wells envisioned. The 1954 "War of the Worlds" probably answered these issues best, and that's why it's so endearing. The Martian war machines float above the ground on electromagnetic "legs" that can't be broken, they have shields to prevent conventional attacks, and they have heat rays and skeleton beams that can't be defended against.

  • You really do see the dilemma for filmakers nowadays making these alien invasion movies.....while even low budget flicks can put out impressive special effects such as this movie...and they are very good hats off to the CGI team on this movie...where you can see the problem is with....people. they just dont have the budget to have lots of people milling around such as would happen in an invasion and the streets seem sterile despite the invasion which just sort of takes away from the movie somehow. still, they did a great job.

    • In the original war of the worlds, the tripods could be taken out by artillery so modern weapons would wreck them, that said a actual alien invasion could win mostly by just dropping rocks from orbit on all major resistance points.@@wackydude101

    • Well, more Mars probes, orbiters and landers have mysteriously failed than on all the other planets put together. More than a 50% mission failure rate on Mars and no decent explanation as to why...... I agree it's implausible, but I still wouldn't say the possibility exists 🤔
