  • I do like the contrasting images of a highly advanced alien war machine and the not-so-advance human society. The Tripods actually look pretty good, kinda like giant insects, but they kinda don't look "practical". With the legs directly attached to the sides of the body and eye, it's kinda like a head without a neck. The legs also seem to offer less mobility. Its heat ray however is actually pretty cool. I love the almost silent, partially visible ray. It just kinda makes sense. But one of the things that just makes the Tripods in Spielberg's version superior is obviously the sound design. That horn sound is one of the most perfectly scary sounds ever. Hearing it immediately gives you a feeling of dread and panic.

    • @@bonn7908 You're correct about what the Martians looked like in this BBC version. They look like a three-legged spider/insect, very much like how their Tripods looked like. I think this design is okay. It looks freaky. But this design doesn't make sense. It doesn't have any arms or even tentacles to be able to grab things. It literally has only 3 pointy legs. It is also clearly not telekinetic so it makes you wonder how did an alien like this be able to create such advanced machinery? Spielberg's Martians, despite not resembling the book, made sense since it had arms. The Martians in the book version had a lot of tentacles. But the BBC version only had pointy legs.

    • @@CEOofRacism "Dude this series had very low low budget than the 2005 version." If you think the lazy design is just because of low budget is 'automatically okay', that doesn't mean it makes the show 'good'. In fact, designing a Tripod more practical is NOT that hard regardless of the budget. "The only reason this movie is different is bc its more similar to the novel" What're you talking about? The 2005 version was set in the present day for a reason as an allegory for terrorism during the 9/11 attack, and while it made a lot of changes, it adds to the themes and contexts of evolution, hierarchy, the danger of imperialism, and the consequences of the abuse of technological advancement from the original book. This miniseries's setting is meant to be the closest to the book, but the way it was executed and poorly written makes this adaptation a complete and utter failure as every element has nothing to do with the themes from the book, leaving the fans of the novel, like me, very disappointed.

  • The martians here are - just like in all adaptations - not intelligent like in the book. In the book, what makes them terrifying isn't just their heat ray or the tripods. It's their methodical, adaptive approach to eradicating human civilisation. Like exterminators, not some invading force. This happens a few times: 1. When they arrive, one of their number underestimates the gravity of the planet and falls out of the cylinder into the pit below. The others quickly exterminate all life around to ensure nothing can harm it while it's down there. 2. One of the tripods gets destroyed by a lucky shot from an array of cannons in a town, they don't attack larger towns directly after that, instead shooting massive cannisters of black dust from afar like artillery. The cities become coated in massive cones of black dust, with no survivors and no risk to the martians. 3. While wading out to sea, two of them get destroyed by the Ironclad, Thunderchild. They immediately target ammunition compartments after that, detonating the ships or making them unable to attack before coming too close. 4. They fortify their landing zones and dig holes to hide their work and machines in, so they can't be spotted easily. 5. They create various types of machines to dig, to build, to perform extremely accurate procedures that baffle the protagonist since he didn't expect such accuracy was possible for a machine. 6. They hide in the ruins of London to observe humans having festivities at night, getting drunk and living the good life because they're soon to die anyway. And they watch the humans do this without attacking, waiting until they're inebriated before rounding them up with ease. 7. They created the parts for a flying version of the fighting machine, since they were only the makeshift expeditionary force and the tripods were multifunctional tools, not just weapons. The martians were terrifying because the longer it went on, the clearer it was humanity didn't and never would stand a chance. To them, were were the animals to be herded and controlled. Nothing more. No adaptation has gotten any of this right.

The one and possibly two fighting machines cut down by Thunderchild, were caught off guard because it lay low in the water and they couldn't see it, and because it kept up its momentum even after it had been melted to wreckage, hitting them in the legs. Yes, these martians were overconfident, but they quickly corrected themselves using the black dust immediately after and it's not even sure those Martians died, given how there are other instances where their machines take damage and are repaired in the field because the hood carrying the Martian was intact.

Nowhere in the known universe is that fear more readily prevalent, than our own oceans. In fact, Lovecraft's fear of the water is the reasoning for a large swathe of his works involving horrors from that deep sea. Oceans are continually used for important settings or to play vital roles in cosmic horror to this day, and to see the sea be the sight of Humanity's first triumph against the Tripods is an interesting spin on the trope.

The best and worst bit is when the idiot playing the hero deliberately catches Cholera or some disease and then goes out to the Martians and lets then eat him! So they then all get ill and die, thus allowing the woman and others to escape! Woman takes over the lead role and becomes the super hero leader of the survivors etc...then it leaves the plot of the book behind and goes off to do some other made up plot set some years later. Its an utter turd of an adaptation and typical Woke BBC garbage.

    • No I am not raging blindly. It was terrible. They made a big deal about it being Victorian set, with tripods, like the original. And the opening was not bad. But then, like many things it deviates from the book way too much. I mean its so different its almost a completely new story, with only the names of some characters, the period and the Tripods remaining. Ogilvy survives to pop up later with the women boss to take the fight to the aliens at some point, I cant even remember much about how it ends as by that point I had given up. What really hacked me off and caused to "rage blindly" is the male hero, the lead in the book decides to sacrifice himself, which he does not do in the original story. And there is no woman along with him for the ride there either. All of that is by the by, but it was the truly stupid and idiotic way he does it, catching a disease so that he dies, and lets the aliens eat him, so they die too! Truly a blind leap in the dark writing! Then the woman becomes the lead and carries the rest of the story. ALL NOT IN THE BOOK!!!! Which goes back to the point I made, where you may as well just make something totally different, some alien invasion series, as its not really war of the worlds.. Killing the male hero lead, to replace him with a woman is about as woke as you can get. Heaven forbid they show a male hero saving the day in the end. And killing yourself stupidly does not make him a male hero in my book. Have you seen the other War of the Worlds series set in France? Its nothing like the book either. Other than the name, but its a fairly gripping alien invasion story, and was worth watching and way better than this BBC disaster....

    • The perfect adaptation would actually just be the book. People who haven't read it think the adaptations we got are pretty good but trust me 1 for 1 adaption of the book would blow minds. Couple of scenes or things that would be mindmeltingly cool. - The initial human response to it. Dinner discussions about the helpless but dangerous Martians in their pit - The rapid onset of Martian presence in the background, where we see something has gone horribly amiss before the protagonist even gets back home. - The attack on Woking and other towns, this is where humanity first sees what the Martians can do. Houses dissolve, rivers boil, mass exterminations on a horrible scale with horrible weapons. Five tripods in one area! The luck shots that down one... - The apathy of London on the eve before calamity, confusing, refugees trickling in, the slow onset of unrest and beginnings of worry and concern going through the 6 million populace. - The miliary moving en masse in the largest military operation ever. Cannons, guns, soldiers everywhere, in a landscape for miles and miles, with thousands upon thousands of troops sent to destroy the invaders. And then... the silent, methodical response from the Martians, the black vapour. Death to all that breathes... - The great London panic - this one would be a scene going down in history - the brother waking up to banging on the door, being yelled at to wake up and leave. Opens his window, every church is ringing its bells, every car blowing its horn, every trumpet being used to wake London in the middle of the night. People, drowsy and confused coming onto the streets, seeing the red glare on the horizon. And then... once the meaning of this becomes clear. The army is wipes out, the government dissolved. The Martians are coming. The rout, the mass panic as they know there's nothing now to ward of the invaders and they have the means to kill millions of people in moments. Geezus, that would be a banger. - The beach scene... god so much more...

    • Pendragon's version was thrown aside in a legal dispute with Paramount over the use of the name War of the Worlds, since Paramount already had their movie in the planning stages. I've seen some scenes from the Pendragon production but not the whole thing, the CGI was awful, even for 2005 standards, I'm sure a lot of work went into it nonetheless but it was an ill fated project right from the start.
