War of the Worlds - 1 Hour of New Gameplay (2024)
Work in progress pre-alpha gameplay, everything is subject to change, nothing is final
It’s been a while since our last public update but things have been moving behind the scenes. I wanted to have this video for you guys around New Years but I had some severe project corruption issues around Christmas that set me back quite a bit. We’re all caught up now though.
This is our biggest update video yet.

Thank you to all the other insanely talented people who have blessed this project with their hard work and skill. This project is a culmination of thousands and thousands of man hours by only a handful of passionate people. Everyone working on the game is a huge War of the Worlds fan.
This wouldn't be possible without our Patreon supporters who are funding the development of War of the Worlds. Thank you to the community and those who support and have been following the progress patiently. We hope to create the game that we have all always wanted.
To our closed testers, thank you for your contribution and support to the project. Your feedback and suggestions have shaped the game into what it is today.
FAQ Were the 2005 tripods replaced? : No, as you can see in the video you can play with both the 2005 tripods and the new tripods we've added. It's up to you. Why were sounds replaced?: Sounds were NOT replaced. The 2005 tripods still have their original sounds, the new tripod we've added has its own sounds. Was the Tripod changed cause a copyright strike?: No, there has been no issues regarding copyright since the project began. War of the Worlds is public domain meaning anyone can make an adaptation of it. We made our own tripods as to not use the movie tripod designs in a way that could be considered a copyright infringement. The 2005 tripods are a free addition to the game while the new design is the new default tripod. This game is boring, all you do is run and hide: There is a lot that we haven't shown or is not ready to show yet. There are hostile NPCs, probes and aliens that can search inside buildings you are hiding inside of, NPCs you can team up with, Multiplayer, extermination mode where you can play as the invaders. There is more we have planned to bring more depth and replayability to the game Do the tripods always know where you are?: No, they treat you like any other NPC. They wander and search on their own not constricted to paths. This video is meant to serve as a development update. Not as a gameplay trailer or marketing for a public release. All of our videos are meant to be interpreted as a development update to show what we have worked on and improved. Many comments criticize certain aspects of the game such as graphics, performance drops, lack or unfinished nature of some gameplay elements etc. This is pre-alpha. We try to be transparent by showing actual gameplay with the FPS counter open so people can get an idea where we are at in the process.
Rafael I agree with you
I hope that someone will see my question. Sanctions. I live in Belarus. It is known that sanctions were applied to Russia and Belarus, limiting not only websites on the Internet. We lost a lot of games on Steam, just because of this. So here it is. Will this game be subject to sanctions, due to which at the time of its release I will not be able to buy it, or not? This worries me very much, since I have been waiting for the game since childhood.

Love the progress of this game. I've watched all the videos. The audio from 21:45 to 22:40 is phenomenal, that's terrifying to listen to. Also the nature has improved amazingly as well. I think a cool feature would be that if the player walks into a house and finds tools, boards or plywood somewhere, maybe they could board up doors and windows to stop the aliens from getting inside. Or make it harder to prob the house. Along with that, the ability to move objects or stack them to make a hiding spot to try and survive. Another suggestion would be coding small buildings to be destroyed if the tripods walk through them. Just a couple suggestions :) Keep up the great work, this has been fun to follow progress of, and I also love these videos. Thumbs up!!!

@@Ebalosus I think there's been games with the topic before, but this sort of game hasn't been tried because what we see here is the most asymmetrical multiplayer that's ever existed. Or at least I can't think of any game where "too insignifcant to be noticed" is a central gameplay feature. _Maybe_ plane vs. infantry is a similar scenario, but the asymmetry in that is mostly dependant on if the war your game of choice depicts involves rocketlaunchers.

I'm no expert but 48:30 really got me. The developers must be genius, this is IMPRESSIVE!
The new tripods are honestly so much cooler while still honoring the 2005 versions.
Sounds a bit dark. But I was think that having signs of the destruction reaching across the area could be good. For example: having ash falling from the sky, bodies floating in a stream, or burning cars and trains moving around.
Oh for sure. Kind of like what Black Mesa did- initial days, blue skies, not much damage and such, but as days go by, sky darkens with smoke, you can hear the fight raging on around you (ex. artillery, fighters going overhead, bombing runs), etcetera etcetera. I’d love something like what Project Zomboid did with survivor houses or holdouts.

Grimdark like Warhammer + Warhammer 40k enjoyed watching this on the big TV , fantastic work here.
I agree with this except for the bodies floating in water. That scene never made sense cause the tripods dont really leave bodies, and when they do, I doubt they toss lots of bodies into water of all things all at once, they kinda just drop people onto the ground and harvest them rather than dump the bodies. Will admit that the scene was pretty messed up tho.
the new design for the tripods looks great but the sounds of the old tripods is far more terrifying
Totally agree...they somehow became way less intimidating without the sounds.
agreed..the ooldtripod "howl" was awesome if possible bring it back
This design resembles those from the Tom Cruize film, which I prefer in both visual and sound design. Might be a copyright thing. Maybe they'll create a new "horn" that's spookier
They should do both, not sure why the howl was taken away, its iconic.
It's almost definitely a copyright thing. War of the worlds itself is public domain but the version of the tripods in the 2005 movie is copyrighted

I LOVE the soundtrack that starts at 48:02. It goes from suspenseful to something that feels hopeful/empowering and then adds more suspense to it. Very nice dynamic. It also fits really well with the footage showing how the animation of the tripods have reached a new level of realism.
Adding the fact that it matches incredibly well with the soundtrack from the movie.
I personally think it would be nice for the sounds of battle to carry much further. For one, it would be much more immersive; hearing the rumble of gunfire and dull roar of aircraft in the distance would be a constant reminder that there is a world beyond just the player's vision. And it would be much, much more apparent that the silence you hear afterward isn't because the battle is offscreen; it's because there is no battle anymore.
Hmm yes batlle sounds could become a reason for more tripods to travel to the area as well.
@@geronimo5537that would be a sight. Imagine seeing a battle of in the distance, running in the opposite direction just to see a small group of tripods coming to render aid
Or hearing people scream as they walk over you (in the movie you could hear them scream in the storage thing)
Good thought, however our brains somehow respect acoustics that are more in keeping with realism. I know it's a game and artistic license allows for embellishment, but there's something genuine to the senses about hearing things at distance closer to how they would in real life. I think it adds to the terror when you hear it up close
@@stevesteve2198 Then in keeping in line with reality, we would be able to hear firefights at a much greater distance. Modern war is loud, and with the kind of ordnance the military is pulling out to delay the tripods, you'd by able to hear them miles and miles away. To be completely honest, there's a good chance that we just might be deafened up close, given that we probably don't have hearing protection designed to handle tank cannons and rocket barrages.
the addition of the EAS playing over the radio during the invasion just sends absolute chills down my spine.
Your sound people are amazing. This is absolutely incredible. The sound detials are very precise, such as the distance delays for some sounds. I put in headphones and I feel like I'm really there. This game sounds absolutely phenomenal. Of course - the visuals, the gameplay mechanics, everything, in general, looks excellent as well --- but, having been into writing music and doing sound design on the side for most of my life now, these are the things that just always catch my eye above all else. The way that the Heat-Ray sounds when the tripod is far off into the distance? The way it just splashes off the atmosphere, almost like the sound of a fighter jet engine? What's more, the mechanical clanks and cyclical noises as the things just lumber around. It's so well-done. I'm not sure if this was just added, or if it's just the first time I'm seeing it - but I absolutely LOVE that super dissonant, ring-modulator type "chirp"/croaking" sound that the tripods make now! Not sure if this was added before and I just hadn't seen it until now, but it is absolutely perfect. It's exactly the last thing you would want to break that silence at night in the middle of the woods. It reminds me a lot of that "accurate depiction of the T-Rex vocal sounds" video that had just gotten popular / was circulating around quite a bit over the last few months. Outstanding work!

@@slaapliedjehe just find out their plans early lol
@LaneB16 there is a podcast that he was on where someone asked him how he was able to predict the twin towers attack before it happened and he explained that he saw the signs based on the movement and actions of political figures, where they were moving money to and from and how they were acting towards other countries and sure enough after he was confident that it would be the twin towers that would get attacked they were and exactly by how he expected and by "who" he anticipated it to be from. He apparently does this same thing with all sorts of other predictions, and apparently it's right most of the time. Sounds insane but it's a tried and true method it turns out. Like I stated before, if he came out today and said "stay inside tomorrow and do not expose yourself to any of the sun's rays or else you will get immensely sick" I would likely call into work and stay home not because I believe what he's saying, but because at this point the things he has gotten right is uncanny and I would rather NOT take the risk of him being right about something crazy yet again.

Jlex Aones tried to warn them. They didn't listen. Now they pay the price.
@ZoomerStasi never downvoted or disliked it zoomer. In fact, kind of hoping to be another person who can maybe test the game if I had the chance. And in reality, you better hope and pray the conflict in the Middle East doesn’t escalate to an extreme degree.
16:45 I'd love to see a scene like this where you're exploring and suddenly all the animal noises stop, and a short while later a tripod comes out of the ground. it'd make players so much more on edge.
I have an idea - instead of tripods coming out of the ground, it could be Mr. Bean.
I agree. At the very least, I think the animal audio should go silent when a Tripod is in the vicinity. It's very realistic as the animals would flee or hide when a predator is nearby. Genius detail. The silence with a faint thumping of the footsteps would be incredibly eery.
What an awesome video. I have been "following" this game for a while now and the evolution of the tripods is awesome. Please release this for us gamers (like myself) to purchase.
This looks splendid. Phenomenal work!
God I hope KZheadrs gives this game the attention it needs.

@@radiationhazardsfather6310true. It's going to become just like many other games once the big youtubers get on board to milk the content dry. Smaller channels that want to cover it just for fun will get hate because it's just them "copying other more bigger content creators for clout" I hope that's not the case because the devs have put so much love and care into this for it to end up that way. I'm almost certain that Sean (Jacksepticeye) is going to love this game.

Was that an Alex Jones and Stephen Colbert impersonation at the beginning? Lol
That it was lol!
i like the radio in the beginning, they are joking about something that is really coming, small details like that make the game so much more enjoyable espically easter eggs
Sounds like Colbert vs Jones

I saw the 2005 War of the Worlds movie when I was about 8 years old. I had watched all kinds of horror movies like Alien, Predator, Aliens vs Predator, Pitch Black, The Thing... other sci-fi horror stuff. My Dad loved it cos I just thought the monsters were badass and cool. But War of the Worlds...That scared the shit out of me. There's just something so unnerving and unique. I couldn't move a muscle for weeks when I went to bed because I just kept thinking about that Telescopic Probe Camera thing watching me through the window or in my room. What I'm tryna say is, I was locked into watching this gameplay and loved every second, while also shaking and shittin' my pants at the same time. The rhythmic, mechanical noise of the tripod walking closer and closer in the pitch black...I need this game in my life so bad.
When I was young I was terrified of war of the worlds in a way like nothing else. I remember I stopped watching around the scene where the military was unable to hold back the aliens. It was a hopeless scene in my eyes, more than the ones before it. That scene probably opened me up to have the fear of the size and sound of these tripods. Hiding in a corner in a house as the sound of tripods swarms you, and the light peeks through the windows is pure anxiety to me and I love that the game can capture it.
im literally about to rewatch the 2005 film cheers to tom cruiseantology
Yeah, this movie also terrified me when i was young. I wouldnt even go outside at night. I wanna get this game just so i can play as a human and take these fuckers down.
This may sound crazy, but I recently saw the original original (1956-57) and believe it or not it was still a damn good movie. The S/FX were dated but what really stuck with me is what u said about the movie scaring the shit out of you. Even though the original came out in the mid '50s I still got a chill up my spine. 😀
That eye camera thing scared me to, when Rachel sat up and it was just there. Anytime I woke up in the middle of the night, I'd peek one eye open and look before I turned over
The sound design is absolutely amazing.
I wonder if they’ll have different starting roles you could be. Imagine spawning in as a Survialist with a Headstart (basement, stockpiled food, etc) or perhaps even getting to play as the Military/National Guard!
3 things I would love to see would be: -The little camera arms from the tri pods scouting houses so you REALLY have to hide -Trees should stay knocked down after tri pods walked through them -A little more detail to destruction as falling broken parts of big buildings kinda look sus right now (7:28) The flawless walking animation is just *chefs kiss* The Horn sounds are nice (and scary) Would love to game this piece of gamery
He's shown the probe in prior videos, so its there.
They do have the camera probs. Now the matter of will the A.I use them to scout the area is definitely worth checking out. But so far they did show in the previous gameplay video before this one that they have them for you to use as a tripod.
Search KZhead for the probe video. It's about 6 mos old or older, but it searches the houses very realistically.
@@moviemaker2011z A previous video shows the A.I use the probes so yes, they do use them to scout buildings, but that A.I was also with the 2005 design Tripods, the new design might need to adapt that A.I.
Trees getting knocked down wont happen, seeing the engine they are using. (Seriously, why are game engine evolving backwards)
I have a cool idea in real life when a predator comes around crickets and other noisy bugs go silent. Imagine when a tripod gets close the crickets at night go silent indicating one is close. It could be a cool warning of an enemy and if you don't pay attention you will die.
It looks awesome. I hope my video card can run it. I cant wait to see the update on the probes or controlling the tripod like in the older video releases. Thank you for the progress update!
i love the radio thats gonna be an amazing future.please keep updating it i feel like it can be a big part in the game
I really like how you set the stage with the ignorance and over confidence of humans by having that radio show on
Brilliant
The guy who voices the comedy-radio channel is just such a good voice actor.
Two of the voices sounded very recognizable...one was Stephen Colbert, the other was not as distinct, but reminded me of Rush Limbaugh.
@@NoelKerns Alex Jones. I wasn't sure if the host was supposed to be Stephen Colbert or Conan O'Brien
@@venomousgoose5023alex jones is correct! it wasnt colbert, tho. i collected a ton of footage of random newscasters and talk show personalities and mixed them all together for training data to get a very average and generic voice. it just so happens that he sounds very, very similar
Love the dieselpunk tripod design spewing black smoke like they're run on combustion engines. They look sick!
I think the black smoke is actually something straight out of the original book that's only touched upon _once_ in the 2005 movie, shown as exhaust when deploying the heatrays Take this with a grain of salt because I did not read the book, but I think the original idea of the black smoke was basically a crowd control weapon, where if people breathe it in, it's basically near-instant fatality!
@@alexrva433 I like the black smoke in other WoTW variations but I kinda feel it looks bad in a game going for the 05 vibe, since it makes the Tripods way easier to see coming and way more "telegraphed"
I personally don't like it. Nothing about the tripods design says "we still use fossil fuels" guarantee if you can build something like that, relocate it to another planet and return to said planet and pilot it, you're beyond combustion engines. Though the new designs are cool, still look very alien.
@@elsienova4269I don't think the tripods need to care. It's not like they're stealthy in any other way...
BTW, check out the 80's Omni Magizine War of the Worlds issue for some cool artwork.
I remember randomly coming across one of the earlier vids you made for this game. I'm glad to see that it's still coming along, and well it seems. Now that I'm on PC rather than console, i will definitely keep a closer eye on this game
HUGE props to your composer team, they've done an incredible job of capturing that classic gut-twisting John Williams feel from the 2005 film. So glad y'all went that direction with it!

05:11 alright that is scary, hearing in the radio how the aliens are attacking and killing the people
that part gave me chills
5:09 If you listen closely you can hear people banging on the door to let them in trying to hide from the machines The amount of detail on this is phenomenal
Just imagine hearing the hoax broadcast that actually happend back some years ago. I imagine that's where the idea for this scene came from and it was done perfectly
@AeionEX it was pretty good. You can listen to it on KZhead.
At 5:24 I’d be like: “Ohh. That doesn’t sound good.”
I like how the new Tripods look kinda like Reapers from Mass Effect
Tip for devs: Where are the small ones - aliens? Player have to fight also time to time. It semms good... but, try to imagine if there will be opportunity after tripod came to you & after a few minutes you can be exposed by small ones creatures like in the movie - they're trying to find you or search for treasuare (scene with the bike wheel).

If I may, another indie developer wrote about how he implemented building destruction. He said: "First idea: at the time of the explosion, the engine takes a snapshot of the house just as it’s seen from the camera . . . Next it generates a particle effect that fills the space of the exploded zone, and apply the snapshot to the particles as a texture, so that from the camera, the first frame of the explosion is seen exactly the same. Continuity achieved! You can follow every detail with your eyes during the explosion until they disperse. Besides the particles are GPU-accelerated 2D billboards. The PS4 can handle bazillions easily." He also said: "Second idea: given a building and the position of an explosion, how do we generate the wrecked version of the building, including thick inner walls? The trick is to keep a “paper” version of the building (with walls with no thickness), that the player doesn’t see, and an “inflated version” with thick walls that’s displayed on screen. The engine has the feature to “inflate walls” of a “paper” mesh very fast. When a new explosion takes place, we discard the inflated version, we remove the triangles of the “paper” mesh near the explosion (updating the paper version), and we regenerate the inflated version based on the paper version." His ideas might be worth a try if you have the time.
This needs more likes and comments. Hopefully it'll get more cause these ideas are genius
yeah, the destruction kinda looks weird right now in the game
Just follow how the BF devs did it for the finals using unreal 5. It might be hard to indie devs due to how tedious it could be however.
Being a pre alpha, i wonder if better building destruction is just on hold for now. Seeing that janky building destruction in the beginning did kinda take away from the experience a little
