  • It's a shame seeing people disliking the fools video :( For me the fools result videos are, above all, my preferred ones since they show how this communnity is still pretty united after all of these years. Thank you anyway for all of these events!

  • It's sad to know that people dislike your April Fools videos, I look forward to them every year even if I don't participate in the events because for all I love glitching and hacking games I don't have the technical knowledge :c thank you for all of them and for the hard work during the years!

  • The game was unreal good, its definitely at least 10 hours of content since you will spend some time around learning the mechanics and figuring how to deal with them (this is especially true for the bossfights). In fact, that was the main thing that made the game difficult. I struggled a lot with Zapdos and the glitch lord, but once you got it figured out, its pretty easy. If you put even more content, even fewer people would have been able to clear it. For the time given, it was already quite a lot. And the soundtrack is a massive banger! The challenges were pretty interesting, in the end I was able to do number 3 and 1. I didn't had time to tackle 2 and no experience for 4. But for a first time, I consider this a win. You could use the community tab to announce the April Fools or release a "normal" video on that day and put it into the description and mention it in the video. I totally missed the 2023 since I was not on the Discord yet. Also only close to 300 people even beat the hooked metapod. That would be my metric to base completion percentages on - the others either didn't link their account or didn't play the game at all.

  • I admit I had some frustration with difficulty, but reading your explanation here unironically makes me prouder that I actually went through it. I’m glad I grinding the final boss out at the end of the day. The event was great fun! Thank you for all the effort you put in, and thank you for helping get me off my ass and learn so much about these things! You are very much the reason why I’m as proficient with lower level hardware and programming as I am now, directly!

  • Ahhh of course I'd forget to write a message. I was so excited to see there was an event this year that I immediately stopped feeling the physical need for food or sleep. I'm disappointed I couldn't figure out any of the coding challenges, especially with the amount of hours I put into #1 and #3, but I think food and sleep might be important for good brain function??? (maybe) I did eventually get some food and sleep... only to then go crawling around in the Australian wilderness for 24 hours after my cat got chased off by a loose dog while we were on a walk. After that I was absolutely destroyed mentally and physically and had to give up lmao (My cat turned out to be fine though!) Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that I have a deep love and appreciation for these events, but as much as I hate to say it, it's definitely better for both of our healths if they're scaled back from now on :)

  • I always find the April Fools vids/games late but thankfully not this time! I was barely able to reach 1000 points thanks to my experience with the Free Trial of the critically acclaimed MMO the combat takes inspiration from, but it was a good time. Cool engine, clever bosses, and it didn’t overstay its welcome. The difficulty curve was brutal but also made it so I had to actually learn the final boss’s mechanics rather than cheese it. Great music choices too. My only thing resembling a complaint is that it took a bit to grind Blast Seed cash for the “have everyone in the Support/Defend role” achievements. I also bothered to read the long post-credits textboxes, and I’m glad to hear you’re doing better. See you in 2025.

    • Personally I just settled for rolling a few concentrate/brilliancy procs from the pearl for those achievements which I think I would still rather attempt even knowing that it's possible normally now.

    • @@Flametix I carried a few blast seeds, but it should actually work without. Especially if you hope for a little pearl RNG so you don't get doggo'd

    • Oh I think I rigged Turn 1 Concentrate from the Pearl so Venusaur gets 1 boosted Petal Dance for at least one of the final boss achievements, but it seems possible to reach the DPS requirement without it. I just wanted the extra breathing room for later in the fight.

  • When I noticed that event for the first time, I was surprised. For the April Fools Day, we've got a fully playable PMD-themed game. I really enjoyed it! Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it because of the Hack Jam(hello from SkyTemple server, by the way!), but I'll try to finish it soon. (What's strange is that sometimes my gaming sessions were interrupted by... anticheat. The only thing I had turned on is OBS, so I'm not really sure what happened. Oh, and the game crashed once)

  • I thought the game's length was just right for the event and difficulty wasn't too bad, but I did take notes and go around for all the items. Zapdos was probably the hardest boss to deal with, at least at first when I thought it resisted Grass and had never used Petal Dance yet, but that might also be biased in hindsight from fighting Glitch Lord so much for completion. I liked Marill's advice especially on pressing Wait which is honestly relevant for every boss and not obvious at first. The battle system was much more engaging than PMD bosses typically being raw back and forths or just status/seed checks, and the role system was interesting though I feel like defenders were the least relevant, I'm not sure what use Skill Swap was intended for and I didn't bother with it even in the all defender run because I didn't want to forget who swapped types, though it would be a neat tech if you could use it on enemies. Fun to read how the challenges were approached in these different open ended ways.

  • Hey! Honestly I considered doing a much, much longer write-up than my short message, but I wanted to make 100% sure people who watched the whole video would read the message I did put in, and... well, I didn't really have enough characters to do what I wanted to wherein I'd both wish everyone a nice rest of 2024, express being happy/surprised I managed to actually make it to the leaderboards, and mention that I kiiiind of wanna take some notes on the design of this game all at once, while *also* then fitting in a link to a more complete writeup. So I just... didn't do a write-up at the time, saved that for later, after the video dropped. I'm... probably not gonna do a writeup of the scale I wanted to right now, but like... dang! This game is actually really cool, not sure I've seen a turn-based game that works like this before. There's a lot that I really liked about this, and, idk if it was intentional or not, but to name a specific sequence that stuck out to me, I really like how in practice the easiest way to take on the final boss was basically to document its behavior and learn how to exploit it almost like, well, y'know, how one learns to take advantage of a glitch in games? There was a lot else I liked of course, but I felt like that was worth a mention specifically since I'd probably rather save more specific remarks about individual things for a more complete write-up that I will hopefully maybe do some day. A shame about the postgame stuff not managing to get into the game in time though, that would've probably been pretty fun admittedly, but ah well. Life does happen! I'm glad you managed to make this at all, it's actually a really cool game that I wanna throw out as a recommendation for friends of mine who I'm pretty sure haven't even seen your stuff because like. It's kinda just a neat game even without full context? ...also, I am in fact completely serious that I honestly kind of want to take some notes on how this game works. It... actually kind of solves some design problems I've been trying to figure out solutions for when it comes to "what would one actually do with a turn-based RPG where you could freely move around that takes cues from action games"... that, mind you, I've kinda been trying to work out in my head, for, uh... years? I think? Haven't kept track well but it's been a while. It's a concept I think I've had in mind for a while, and here an April Fools' Day game of all things went and actually solved a lot of it! Amazing, genuinely truly amazing to see it. A shame that apparently people weren't actually particularly interested in the April Fools' day stuff, I've been looking forwards to seeing what wild thing you'd come up with next for a few years now even if I haven't participated much in the past directly. (I *tried* to do two of the others though! I just wasn't very good at them and felt like, "oh well, maybe next time I'll do better", heh...) To that end, yeah I think I wanna try to keep up with the smaller April Fools projects going down the line, even if they're gonna be a lot simpler than this and this is the end of an era, well, this was too dang good a sendoff to that era for me to wanna stop there and ignore whatever comes next. I uh... honestly was pretty close to poking the hacking challenges to see if I could manage them despite me... uh... not being... the most skilled programmer ever out there, but it took me long enough to get some of those last gameplay achievements for the final boss that I uh... kinda just decided that I probably had done well enough and didn't have time to learn what I might need to actually solve any of those, heh... which, uh, seeing the relatively *easy* solutions, I was probably right about actually, whoops. EDIT: Oh right, forgot to mention when I first sent this: The soundtrack is indeed a banger. I really wish I knew what that boss theme and final boss theme was originally from, those songs in particular are particularly amazing imo, heh... Anyway! Short version, event was good, game is good, happy to have participated, might do a writeup on my thoughts on the gameplay some day. Might even take some cues for future game projects, who knows?

  • good times. I never managed to get challenge 1, and I even found the original save file it was based off of and attempted bytewise compare to figure it out (hoping the payload was just a jump somewhere else obviously) without success. obviously I missed out something obvious, time to read a writeup and realise how obvious it was. (oh, it was implemeting the gen 1 sprite decompression algo in reverse, yeah ok) i solved challenge 2 because I happened to open it in windhex32 with the correct encoding table, and noticed the string in plaintext, haha. challenge 3.. nice binary exploitation. took me a couple of readthroughs to find the bug, but got it in the end and challenge 4 was kinda cheating for me because I did exactly that before (ok, fine, I was using my RCE exploit, but it just ends up being memory writes anyway), took me longer to get everything ready, pokeemerald built for unstripped ELF, etc, than to actually complete the challenge (took me like two minutes or so with everything set up haha) regarding the actual game, I ended up gettingn bored with what seemed like endless grinding, so just ran it inside debugger (the online js variant helped me with doing static analysis a bit), and having breakpoints on the right instructions I could patch the savegame in memory before the custom crypto is done :) -- then restart the game to see my savefile changes. I ended up getting ALMOST all the achievements this way, and with patching my party's stats, the rest of them were easy enough. ended up doing more static analysis to find out where some of the pokemon were to complete the dex though.
