While I know about contribution of all 4 names you mentioned, Bhagat Singh and Bose are as alive in national consciousness as anyone else. • Gandhi was a convenient personality for the British to allow to be worshipped. The white world liked the idea of this peaceful protestor who poses no immediate threat. The British didnt leave India because of Gandhi, but because they had already taken from her what she could give, and the political atmosphere was getting increasingly hostile. This was fuelled by non-peaceful revolutionaries. Gandhi just delayed the independence movement by at least 5 decades.

Or more precisely, you have been systematically kept unaware of his contemporaries and their thoughts and actions. Had he not supported the Partition, Indians would have been saved of so much of heartache; so many lives would have been saved. We wouldn't have the Kashmir issue. You know only that you've been told. And that's exactly my original point.

    • Real Indian freedom fighters got whipped, thrown into dungeons and hanged because they were ACTUAL threat to British. Meanwhile, Gandhi was getting 4 meals a day in his so-called prison sentences. Tbh That tells you the whole story. Gandhi was a monk, a cult leader who was given supreme political power which was dumbest thing in history of humanity. No monk or philosopher can be nation’s leader.

Look for Ben Y in comments and see how many people still agree to that ridiculous justification of colonial rule. Like they selflessly went to another country and literally caused discord, poverty and torture to "civilize" them I bet you money they still think of slavery same way. They don't care for us, unless they want to insult us. They are DELUSIONED heavily and entitled. Racism is still here because of them and some of us even. We hate our own nation and would try to appease any white person because we are still hungover by colonial mindset. Otherwise justify the comments here. • I think it should be noted that he never really stood up for womens' rights and their empowerment. For example, in his famous Dandi march, he had forbidden women to take part. They however, did take part because of the Sarojini Naidu who persuaded him to do so. At the age of 13-14 after he had got married he had explicitly told his wife to never go out of the house without his prior permission. It does not end there. He also thought that it was always the fault of women when they got raped and also they should never fight their rapists. he also stated that the jews in germany should "jump off a clip" and thus refrain from using violence in defending themselves. Also the sole contribution of his towards the indian freedom struggle was that he led to thousands of unnecessary deaths at the hands of the british police which could have been easily avoided by using force and the most important contribution yet was making the arrival of freedom slower, without him and his methods, we would have gotten way long back in our history pursuade

Gandhi believed Dalits deserved to be discriminated and when British PM Ramsay MacDonald gave rights to Dalits that were already given to other minorities like Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, etc, Gandhi went on a fast to deny Dalits their voting rights. Dr Ambedkar, the greatest Indian of all time and a Dalit himself called Gandhi's denial of rights to Dalits as the worst blackmail of all time

People aren't aware that Gandhi was an upper-caste Hindu, who supported the oppressive caste system in India. The real MLK of India was BR Ambedkar, who fought for the rights of the untouchables/Dalits. On the other hand, Gandhi believed that the untouchables, whom he called Harijans, were supposed to be doing menial jobs because it's their "Dharma".

  • We learn about Gandhi's life mostly from his own very voluminous and frank writings including about his inner desires and fears. So, nothing quite hidden there. He grew up in a wealthy family in a caste-ridden society and got educated in colonial Britain. So, his views on race in his youth were rather as expected. His later years were marked by well-known struggles against discrimination. Clearly, he evolved in his views on equality. His main contribution to the Indian independence was spearheading the masses into a nationwide movement with help from loyal colleagues, of course. The eventual independence could possibly have come without Gandhi, but his many movements unified a diverse nation and offered templates for many local movements both in India (e.g., Bhoodan, Chipko) and elsewhere. For perspective, his experiments in nonviolence were innovative and inspired millions while those in celibacy were bizarre and surely avoidable.

  • Yes yes yes! This is what I've been looking for. Gandhi wasnt a perfect man but he was not necessarily pure evil. But we should look more into the wrong things he's done before we look into his work for the freedom of India. But we should give him the due respect for his work and efforts. India needs to label him as 'the noble Saint who did nothing that was wrong', and in my opinion, no man is a pure and unevil Saint. Thank you for uploading such an eye opener for a lot of people who didn't know Gandhi's dark doings behind the closed doors. And people like Bhagat Singh, and subhas Chandra bose need to be praised for their actual efforts for our indias freedom Love from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳

  • A lot of ignorant comments here. I don’t care if people view Gandhi positively or negatively, but we need a few history and humanities classes, based on these wildly limited conclusions; as if many of us can’t see beyond “good guy” or “bad guy” rather than understanding the complexity and nuance being discussed here. Gandhi’s darker views were pretty run of the mill for that period of humanity, unfortunately. That doesn’t make those actions and attitudes okay, but it does make him less “pure evil” when it’s the only thing he knew at the time, based on the world around him. So I say that despite his flaws, he was trying to do good things with what he knew at the time, while obviously having poor judgement and making mistakes in the process. Which is what we all do.

  • The sad thing is modern Indian youth are aware of the one true liberator of India, Subhash Bose who did unimaginable things under those circumstances, went to any lengths to see that India gets Independence. He got the job done but had to go recluse since the ww2 was won by Allied Forces. Yet till now Indian govt spends millions of dollars to further sell the image of Gandhi to west, the white colonizers are very happy as it shows they gave India for the non-violence movement, puts them in great light. The story is the transfer of power was a scam, the power went to the same boot lickers who used to have tea in the evening with their white masters.

  • I've found, in reading a lot of history, that it's difficult to really understand the mindset of a particular time. However, the thing that did disappoint me about Gandhi is that his interest in racial issues only really became strong when it was in relation to his personal experience. He wasn't prepared to fight for respect and acceptance for all, rather for all those like himself. This doesn't mean his contribution isn't significant or a great thing, but that we need to stop seeing figures as either totally good or bad. Try to understand why they thought in certain ways and acted how they did. I imagine this will give a more realistic and well rounded view of people and the world they lived in and in turn, of ourselves.

  • Gandhi also was very ignorant towards the caste system in India, although he did condemn the untouchability part for public show, he ultimately did believe that people are born into these different castes and they should do the work they were assigned by birth. He also made a fasting-till-death vow until separate electorates for the untouchable/lower caste were not canceled. Don't forget that at last, he was a lawyer and a politician.
