Why Eat Bone Marrow? Benefits of Collagen, Minerals, Fat & Stem Cells in Marrow by Thomas DeLauer

antlerfarms.com/blogs/article... Bone marrow is the soft, gelatinous substance that fills the cavities of bones. It is a nutrient dense and energy rich whole food, containing hemopoietic stem cells, healthy essential fats, collagen, and minerals.
However, much of the western world views bone marrow as a byproduct of meat. The nutritional value of bone marrow, and the corresponding health benefits, are thus greatly underappreciated. This has been a common belief for many decades but fortunately bone marrow, and its lesser derivative bone broth, have been making a strong comeback.
There are two types of bone marrow - red bone marrow and yellow bone marrow. Each performs a different function. Red bone marrow has a rich blood supply, and produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The red coloration comes from the presence of hemoglobin in red blood cells. Red marrow occurs throughout the skeleton during infancy. At birth, a calf’s bone marrow is comprised completely of red marrow.
Yellow bone marrow mainly occurs in the marrow cavity of long bones. As a calf ages, red bone marrow is replaced by the yellow bone marrow. It mainly acts as a store of fat cells. The yellow coloration comes from the carotenoids in fat. Yellow marrow produces fat cells, cartiliage and bones. From a nutritional standpoint, red marrow contains more active substances, such as hemopoietic stem cells. Because our bone marrow is extracted from young calves, it contains a high percentage of red marrow and thus has greater nutritional value than bone marrow from older animals.
Bone marrow is largely comprised of healthy fats. Not too long ago, nutritionists erroneously professed that eating foods containing fat would lead to obesity and heart disease. But they were very wrong. With more research, scientists now understand the importance of consuming certain types of fat in a healthy diet.
The monounsaturated fat in bone marrow is an essential nutrient. The human body cannot produce it; it must be consumed. Fat is required for many bodily functions. It is a source of energy. It is needed to absorb some vitamins and minerals. It is necessary for cell function. And it is essential for producing hormones and controlling inflammation.
The most prominent benefit of consuming bone marrow is that it can improve overall heart health.
Bone marrow's fatty acids may improve cardiovascular health by lowering harmful LDL cholesterol while raising beneficial HDL cholesterol levels. This enhances the function of blood vessels throughout the body. Bone marrow is also a natural source of collagen, which is beneficial for connective tissues, bones, skin, hair and nails. Bone marrow has conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a super-nutrient with fat burning and anti-cancer properties, and many vitamins and minerals including calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus.
Our bone marrow begins with 100% grass fed cows raised in the beautiful Canterbury Plains of New Zealand. Our cows live entirely outdoors and feed on lush, green pasture year round. New Zealand’s climate, clean air and plentiful water in are perfect for raising cows that are naturally robust and healthy.
Antler Farms® Bone Marrow is freeze dried to ensure its beneficial nutrients remain preserved and highly bioactive.
When choosing bone marrow supplements, it is particularly important that sources are pure and clean. Toxins are stored in the fat cells (bone marrow) of animals. Therefore, the consumption of bone marrow should be limited to only naturally healthy, grass fed animals. Our bone marrow is 100% pure, with no added fillers or binders. No hormones, antibiotics, hyper-immunizations, or GMO’s are used to raise our cows.

  • I am going to be 76 years old this year. I have very good skin, hair, and nails. I never could figure out why until collagen became, THE THING. I am very fond of gristle in meat, and have always preferred the less meaty parts of chicken. My mom and I would take the wings and all that gristle. The legs, simmered, make the best tasting marrow. Another favorite is when I cook spareribs and sauerkraut, I remove the soft end of the bones, and if you bite down the marrow rolls out. It is so good. Here I was improving my hair, skin and nails without knowing it. I make my own skin cream now, using a good base cream, and adding vitamins, such as E, and Coq10, vitamin C, and little tweaks for foot cream, and reducing the heaviness in the face cream in summer. I feel we all require more emollients in winter. I have gotten many compliments, over the years, on my skin, hair and nails. When my husband had to undergo chemo eleven years ago, I researched the foods with the most protein. In my curious brain, I got the notion that protein would perhaps replace cells that chemo would destroy. Chicken was highest on the list. We had every kind of chicken those months, and he did EXCEPTIONALLY WELL. The doctors called him their miracle. He had stage three Esophageal cancer, and had his esophagus removed. Nutritious foods can heal our bodies.

    • I haven't made my first batch yet but trying to figure the best way to use the marrow. So you mash it, strain it, and remove the solids of the marrow? I wanted to try keeping it in, but I don't want a ton of "scum" either. Does the marrow sink down? I'd just leave it in if it does probably.

    • @@jeanmader2302 I should tell you that that was back when I first started making bone broth. I don't do it that way anymore. I extract the marrow from the bones when they come out of the oven and eat it. I then simmer the bones for 6 hours.

      @jamessheridan4306@jamessheridan43062 жыл бұрын
    • @@jamessheridan4306 I guess it depends on the type of bones you get. Your talking larger, and I haven't been to a butcher to get mine. I usually use chicken or spareribs, or beef if you simmer them long enough. I don't see putting them in the oven as bringing out the marrow. But, if it does, is it dryer, and less plentiful?

    @emptydog1109@emptydog11092 жыл бұрын
    • Pressure cooking wouldn't make bone soft. You are probably referring to cartilage or tendons? And yes, its healthy to eat both - they are rich in collagen.

  • A questions that I have is does cooking bone marrow kill any of the stem cells or beneficial components?

    @Dlowr7@Dlowr72 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, cooking will almost always degrade the nutrients in foods, and that includes bone marrow. Our bone marrow is raw (freeze dried) for maximum nutritional retention and bioavailability.

      @AntlerFarms@AntlerFarms2 жыл бұрын
    • @@AntlerFarms I have seen some information stating that the stem cells are largely killed off in bone marrow supplements due to the desiccation process and general fragility of the cells. However, the same information stated that the ‘dead’ stem cells still have nutritive properties despite not being fully functioning. Is it true that the stem cells in bovine bone marrow supplements are technically ‘dead’ and if so do they still have similar benefits?

  • Just bought some marrow bone, the guy cut it in small peace’s and I quickly understood it’s best to ask them to cut it straight sideways instead of those small rolls It looks pink and has blood vessels. Thing is cows don’t live long in the industry, not dairy cows and not bulls, so chances of getting an “old bone” are about zero from conventional farming. I eat it raw, like unsalted butter, could be put on bread, but F bread, put it on churrasco.

  • 3:42 You say "A-dino-pectin" repeatedly. Wrong. It's A-dipo-nectin. Misspeaking once can happen to anyone. Repeatedly misspeaking means you rehearsed this without proper knowledge and your team didn't correct you. That too is okay, you are not a medical professional but a very good actor, who can convincingly relay medical information to the benefit of the company who is paying you for this advert. Yes this is nothing but an advert 🤫. Replay the video, talk to your team, correct it, add a disclaimer that you are not a medical professional but an actor and continue with the good adverts 😊. • Dr. Surya, many doctors are not talented speakers and may not perform well in front of a camera. Sometimes, it takes charismatic individuals to relay Heath information to the masses in a meaningful way, even if they are not doctors. Who cares if this video has an ad for a product if otherwise the rest of the content is both pertinent and accurate to our health?
