Why Sheep Were Sacrificed

  • You're right, you don't sacrifice trash. When people in ancient cultures sacrificed a goat, or sheep, lamb or adult, it was genuinely a sacrifice. It was them giving up something very valuable to their god. Sheep provided so much for ancient people - wool for cloth, leather, bones and sinew for tools, meat, and milk. They were a central part of human life for a great portion of the world, for thousands of years.

We bred them to produce unnatural amounts of eggs, hence their short life span in the industry. So that's just a bad argument. It is a true one but it is a bad one.

  • When I was five (1964), my family took a vacation on a working sheep farm that had a cottage for rent. It fascinates me to this day. I was able to observe a shearing, and it was amazing. Most of the shearers used electric trimmers, but some of them were still using actual, scissor like shears. The guys with the electric shears were only slightly faster than the guys with the old-fashioned model, but obviously had way more stamina. I hesitate to think what sort of grip might come from someone who had spent a career using those things. I noticed that the sheep sheared with the manual clippers tended to be cut. Not anything really serious, but still bloody. These guys were painted with what I can assume to be an antiseptic on their way out of the shed. Also, as part of the visit, I got to see the farm's dogs work the flock. To say "amazing" just diminishes the word "amazing." With just a series of clucks and whistles, the farmers were able to get forty+ sheep into the pen. My sister and I both got in trouble for feeding grass to the farm pig. We probably extended its life by a week or so. I, myself, fell to the farm's goose. She took a particular dislike to me, and I left the farm with a much blackened right buttock.

There is, unfortunately, a lot of misconceptions out there surrounding the proper care of farm animals, particularly large animals, and the best thing we can all do is keep learning! We're all here because we love and respect our animal friends, right? Whether we're keeping them for companionship, protection, wool, meat, milk, eggs, ect. P.S. We owe them because we selectively bred something harmful into them for so long that now they literally face health issues from missing a haircut. What once was a wild animal that could regulate itself naturally by growing and shedding its coat as necessary is now completely dependent on humans because we wanted to exploit a part of their bodies. What is cruel to me is breeding a creature to have traits that are harmful to it because it helps us humans exploit them. IMO, sheep like this are up there with those messed up dog breeds that can’t give birth without a c-section, or who constantly have breathing problems because we bred them that way. It’s just sad what we have done to them.

    • Sheering isn't but the wool industry is. Because this is not the reality of your average wool that you buy in the store. Your average wool comes from sheep from Australia, those that survived the winter lambing which is a practice that kills approximately 20% of all new born lambs. After they grow up, they are sent via live transportation ( which is a form of horrific cruelty) to developing countries like Bangladesh or India where low paid workers sheer them. Being paid by sheep and not hour hence they don't care how the sheep is, investigations found sheep with half their faces sheered. This practice per sheep happens in Australia as well, videos with cruel sheering were found in every country where wool is being sheered for the wool industry. Look up mulesing, watch a video with it. See if you can go through the entire video. This is the reality of wool, lambs frozen to death, dead of pneumonia, live transportation, mulesing, cruelty during sheering and this is why it is controversial and considered cruel. This video here is not representative of the reality of wool and why shearing is controversial.

But it never stops growing until it gets so heavy that the sheep can’t even walk or eat and it even develops mold and flesh eating diseases under the wet matted pelt. It is our responsibility as humans to take care of our sheep and shear their wool to maintain their health because we are the ones who domesticated them and made them this way through selective breeding which took away their ability to shed. There is no undoing what we have done to them already so now it is our responsibility to take care of them.
