Investigating China’s Secret Overseas Stations | 101 East Documentary

In Europe, a Chinese dissident fears for his safety.
He says his life is being destroyed by harassment and threats he believes are linked to a network of unofficial Chinese police outposts - and he says he has evidence to prove it.
A human rights group has revealed more than 100 clandestine “service stations” across the globe linked with police in China, which they say are being used to hunt down Chinese citizens living in exile.
China denies the claims.
101 East investigates allegations of stalking and intimidation of Chinese dissidents and delves into the secretive world of China’s influence overseas.

  • Is it safe to assume that there must be some high ranking government officials who were paid very well to allow this to happen in their countries and to encourage others including the police to look the other way?

    @alysonturcin-weller7443@alysonturcin-weller744311 ай бұрын
    • You could make that assumption, but you'd be very wrong. Between the language barrier, Chinese communities being fairly insular, and w*stoid naivete, there's no need to purchase officials to overlook such actions, as they'd be overlooked. In fact, trying to do so would be a massive risk, as you'd need to ensure the dumb official you hired not only keeps their mouth shut, but also that they have sufficient authority down the chain to hide your op. And that's assuming the official you target won't snitch on you the next moment. I get the idea that the "authorities" having perfect knowledge is appealing, but it couldn't be further from the truth, especially nowadays, when safe communication has never been easier. There's a Chinese food delivery network in my city that's been running underground to avoid taxes and controls. Whenever I order something, and the delivery guy sees who ordered, they're in absolute shock, and I have to go through the motions of proving I actually made the order, and have to promise I won't tell any other laowai about it. It's a pretty hilarious experience, and the food is top notch, as they make it properly, not the "westernized" version. From what I could find out, they've been running this gig since the 90s, and only one shop got caught once since then.

Most don't care about checking facts when the disinformation is about China for fear of being attacked for siding with China in Washington's new politically correct atmosphere. Problem is not china but an ideological bias that west has created in order to defame other countries ! People in west dont check facts but need a story to enjoy and remain active even if it's about bombing and massacreing millions in iraq,afghanistan,syria,libya etc. And i dont know how that makes you like angels of God !

You in the west have got addicted to the sensationalized and concocted stories to enjoy and to remain active even if it's bombing and slaughtering of millions in Iraq,Afghanistan,Syria,libya etc. In its more than 240-year-long history since declaring independence on July 4, 1776, there have only been 16 years in which the US was not at war. From the end of World War II (WWII) to 2001, the US has initiated 201 of the 248 armed conflicts in 153 locations, accounting for over 80 percent of total wars fought. Since 2001, wars and military operations by the US have claimed more than 800,000 lives and displaced tens of millions of people. Do you know what this all means ? The US' obsession with exporting war will leave the US with an indelible shame.

  • For those who couldn’t read Chinese. These organizations are called “Tong Xiang Hui”, or home town assembly. They are organized by immigrants who came from the same region in China. To be honest, they can carry a bit of gangster style, just like Italian mafia. Chinese governments’ mistake, is to allow the local government branch to use them to facilitate drivers license renewal. Then it grew out of control. People outside of China tend to think Chinese government has total control over every branch of itself. We Chinese know that the so called Chinese government’s total control is just a joke. It’s 1.4 billion people. No matter how well organized, the party has so many different layers that the top can’t really know what’s going on at the bottom. I think Al Jazeer tried its best to report without bias. But I still think boxing the Chinese government into this ironclad, single minded self consistent entity is just playing towards the western stereotype. The reality is far from that simple. Like any country, there will be good and bad people in the CCP. And evil people will use their rights for evil things such as intimidation, threatening and bribery.

      @cowpotpi3@cowpotpi311 ай бұрын
    • That may be true. But you can't tell me that something as organized as this has zero ties to the central government. They have official media as shown in the video and the fact that they are able to harass these people no matter where they go shows that they have connections to the intelligence services. There's no way you just randomly find people as quickly as they seem to find them. I do understand what you are saying though. It is a huge country and as far as local stuff goes there is no way that everything going on could be monitored. However something as potentially damaging to international relations as this would certainly not go unnoticed by the authorities at the top.

Where are these police centres where they might actually be useful? Nowhere because the right people have been paid off i guess. I highly suggest any investigative journalists to look into this. So far i havent seen any western journalists look into this. Give me a shout out when you get your Pulitzer.

  • If the Chinese government was really after these people’s lives, they’d never leave China, because one can’t run from China that easily, especially a landlocked city like Beijing. Leaving with your family is a totally different level of impossibility. I’ve stayed on and off in mainland China for 3 years before COVID-19 hit the world and locked down China. You can’t enter, nor leave, China, if the government doesn’t want you to. As long as you don’t go against the communist party, the level of personal freedom one enjoys inside China is more than what one enjoys in most of Asia. Going against any government in most countries, will make you a marked person inside or outside said country, even in alleged bastions of democracy like America, France, or Britain.

Especially when we are talking about the CCP. They screw things up all the time. Just look at how they handled covid😂🤣This is common practice by the CCP mafia. There are videos of CCP police officers calling Chinese people after they left threatening them and telling them to come back to China. They even take your family in China hostage. China is turning into North Korea.

    • What might not be considered 'dissedent' activities in the past has become more and more scrutinized, many so called 'anti-government' agents are simply people who who have left a few years ago, and freely entered and left China despite have personal grudges against the government, which is many many and they simply voiced their opinion, not trying to conduct anything illegal. I'm not denying there aren't foreign funded activities in China, but there's foreign funded activities in every single country from both enemies and allies, so China is not unique but how they treat these cases and their own citizens is unique. I know a family who had always hated the CCP because of the prosecution they faced during the cultural revolution, when they left China they thought it was okay to share certain articles on the cultural revolution and CCP critiques (they didn't even write them, just sharing articles to their friends from places). Shortly afterwards, their wechat began getting monitored, things taken down randomly and retricted from sending things, when the wife went back to get their mother from China, she was questioned in a room for an hour and told to hand over her phone. Luckily she had a different phone so they couldn't find evidence it was her. That's how scary things have become, they think it was probably tracked from their Chinese identity card attached to the Wechat payment account. 10 years ago this would have been unthinkable. In fact the administration before a certain someone came on was very lax and open to criticism as long as there wasn't any organized rebellion. Funny how stable and prosperous things were back then....the protests earlier this year in China were on a scale not seen since Tiananmen. It's almost as if the harder you try to control people and push, the harder a spring bounces back. Maybe just maybe this current CCP admin might have something to learn from the admin previous 20 years? Just a thought... again not saying the CCP is bad or evil, the previous 20 years post tianamen shows how good things can be under a benevolent dictatorship, but the past 10 years is showing the ugly side of it.
