Inside one of Kabul’s largest drug rehabilitation centres | Witness Documentary

2023 ж. 20 Мау.

Afghanistan has one of the world’s highest drug addiction rates. According to the Taliban, there are an estimated four million drug addicts across the country.
Babrak, a former mujahideen fighter, used to be one of them. Now, he is committed to supporting addicts to detox in one of the capital’s under-resourced drug rehabilitation hospitals.
Since the Taliban took power in 2021, international aid has been withdrawn and public services are on the brink of collapse. Babrak and a handful of medical staff struggle to offer a line of hope as the Taliban's anti-drug policies are put into action.
A Second Shot is a film by Marcel Mettelsiefen.

    • The gift of democracy and 20 years of occupation brought significant challenges to Afghanistan. The previous governments in Afghanistan were marked by corruption and instability. Warlords, drug dealers, and mafia elements held positions of power within the government, leading to widespread lawlessness and insecurity. Even near the presidential palace, people were not safe and faced frequent robberies. During this dark period, kidnapping, land grabbing, and embezzlement of public funds were everyday occurrences. Bribery was rampant within governmental offices, further perpetuating a culture of corruption. The president lacked the authority to make meaningful changes, as the country was effectively controlled by powerful drug dealers and warlords. Police officers and military personnel often engaged in extortion, stopping individuals on the streets for money. Regrettably, drug abuse was pervasive among high school and university students, regardless of gender. Additionally, distressingly, there were training centers where women were taught how to engage in kidnapping activities. These circumstances were further exacerbated by the unfortunate support provided by Western countries to these unsavory individuals over the span of 20 years.

  • I've worked in substance abuse field for years in the USA. It's the most rewarding work. Hard work, but worth it. To see people change their lives around for the better, become healthier, and repair relationships, is just so beautiful. Watching the hopeless become hopeful, the scared become brave, and the uninterested become the most motivated. It's so beautiful. I've met some amazing and incredibly intelligent people. The stigma in the USA is that addicts are unintelligent criminals. I've met psychiatrists who were detoxing. Doctors who were detoxing, forensic scientists in rehab, teachers, CNAs, artists, bakers, police officers, fire fighters, so many people. People are more than their addictions. Addicts are not their addiction. It does not define who they are. Please be kind and help those in need. Narcan training is often free at local Healthcare facilities.

  • Ex addict here. Such a well made documentary. I also work with Afghan refugees in the UK and was aware of the addiction issues but not the scale of it. I hated the beginning and the violent forcing of people into rehab but it was great to see how healthy people look after a few weeks not using. I believe the ones who said theyre not exactly well fed or clothed in there as it would be impossible to do this on a tiny budget. I also imagine there is a fair amount of violence in there which wasn't shown in this sanitised documentary. My concern is with women as it would be too shameful for them to get help, I imagine there are many female 'hidden' addicts, which is awful to think about. I imagine there would be so much help from willing international volunteers (myself included) if only the Taliban weren't so bonkers.

    • Ironically you put a negative spin on the whole situation. The people you claim are brokers are the one's that made this rehab possible. They also eliminated 99% of heroin production under a year. When they were condemned for it they admitted that the country was poor but heroin was not only destroying their country but the wider world. Honestly western hypocrisy is too much. Yes they may have laws that are not fair but what did 20 years of American occupation achieve?

    • I know. I was shocked at the way they treated those men. Literally kidnapping, imprisoning them, degrading them (forcing them to shave, strip, shower) and then torturing them by forcing them to go through full withdrawal with no medication-not even giving them the privacy of their own cells. The way he so casually glossed over some of the addicts suiciding over withdrawal was… brutal. I agree they need treatment but kidnapping, torture, imprisonment then releasing them back into poverty is not the answer.

Third, in order for a detox to work you need a program after that helps with getting a job and getting back on your feed, otherwise 95% of these users go back out and use after again, over and over. This guy doesn't want them all to get clean, if he does he is out of a job. The same goes for all the other rehad places all over the world. It's a big business. That's why they don't hunt down dealers but the users, because it's of the drug users on the streets that these business make money from. You get rid of dealers then you get rid of the problem, but do they really want to get rid of the problem when it's a big business and employees a lot of ppl. Think about it.
