Steering Linkage Fabrication - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Build Ep.14

2020 ж. 31 Жел.

In this video I'm fabricating the steering linkage system that allows me to use left hand side steering rack with power steering on my homemade off road 4x4 UTV that now has right hand side steering. This custom steering is a result of necessity - I have to accommodate the steering system over the BMW differential that gets the drive from the rear via prop shaft. Originally the steering rack was right behind the FWD differential / gearbox on the same level as the drive shafts. This homemade system seems to be working but the steering linkage carrier frame still needs to be properly fabricated and welded in place once the brake booster / brake and clutch pedal assembly is installed and placement of other components is figured out.
This is part of a series of a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

As always Donn, your making many complicated ideas come to life and humbleness shows through out it all and it is amazing. Best wishes for the New Year, safe, healthy, peaceful and prosperous for all your friends and family. Thanks for the trip here and look forward to 2021!!

  • Donn I bet you have forgot more about fabrication than most people will ever know and I love the fact that if you don’t have a tool you make a tool. Lol. Reminds me of when I was a kid growing up on the farm and my dad and uncles would build things like you do and that is how I learned so I hope you are passing down your craft to someone that wants to learn because you my friend have got a lot of skills to spare lol.

  • Hey awesome build and enjoy watching. The tie rod ends you used are all right hand thread. Not sure if they were all peugeot, but having a left hand thread with a right hand on the same tie rod would be easier to set the toe later on. On your design, if you have to make a toe adjustment you would need to pop out one tie rod and rotate it. Having opposing threads on each end you only need to loosen jam nuts and rotate tie rod with a pipe wrench.

  • Bell crank steering is similar to the Sabra, with a big difference. The Sabra is front steer, rather than rear steer, meaning that when bump or droop is encountered, the front steer will induce toe in, while rear steer will bring about toe out. The longer the tie rods, the less you will experience. Keeping the tie rods level with the ground at ride height helps. You may have to use spacers at the outboard ends of the tie rods at the steering knuckles. You could change the existing ball joints to Heim joints, which will simplify the tie rod angle. Save that until the vehicle is finished and you have established actual ride height.

  • I think you should make it 4 way steering, just to reduce the steering angles on each tire - which reduces the stress on the suspension. It makes cornering with a trailer on a tight track also much easier, since the trailer will take a larger diameter arch in the curve.
