Gear Shift Linkage - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Build Ep.21
Fabricating gear shift linkage to convert the usually transverse FWD gear engine+gearbox combo shifting pattern into longitudinal shifting pattern. Using old and new axle stabilizer rods from unknown cars and the original shift lever from the donor car I got the engine from.
This is part of a series of a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

make it a challenge add a second transmission ,, that way you could get lower gears ,, that would be a good workout for you to get it done .. great build love the videos ,,
@@randytravis3998 His hearing is already going to be low since the Peugeot transmission goes to the BMW differentials so whatever the transmission ratios are it is multiplied by the ratios of the differentials.
Tere, mees!
From one home fabricator to another, much respect to you! That linkage is a complicated mess. Glad you got it taken care of.
My friend, you are the epitome of 150 years mechanic evolution 👍😊
The gear linkage is a work of art
Cheers man!
-And Functional art as well; the best kind, in my opinion. :]
This gear linkage is still short of his previous demonstration. Check out his previous amphibian truck gear creation portion. More interesting than this
@@stingehte Too late, friend; I watched the whole series already. ;D
@@clarkb1900 so do you still think this one is better than the previous one?
Love the sound of the plasma cutter on the water :-)
On your way to a million subscribers! Great job sir.
Looking good Donn, moving forward with excellent engineering skills!! So fascinating watching you work. Thanks for sharing with us. Keep up the good work and videos and have fun with what you’re doing. Stay safe. Fred 👍👍👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, Fred!
Very good things are invented now I ran into your video where you did the backstage through the rods I myself am also such a small inventor I like your videos
I really liked the thought process and fabrication of the linkage set up in this episode! Adapt overcome and improvise. Cheers from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺🐨🦘🇦🇺
That shifter mechanism is so cool to watch
The cure - friday, got a new meaning when Don upload a new video! God and interesting content!
That is some Project Binky level linkage and bracket wrangling! Nicely done, Donn!
Not long enough, I still had some popcorn left.
Good to see you've got the project in gear. Enjoyed 👍👍
When I see how it's built in my car (205 Peugeot) I just said one thing : Congratulations that you made it yourself !!
My goodness are you extremely smart and patient! That is genius
Now that is cool I love that linkage design !! It works like a charm !! A true fabricator for sure !! Very nice !!👍👍
Nice work! Great solution for the linkage!
Bravo.
Brilliant job on shift mechanism!
Another part figured out and adapted to usable, nothing short of perfectionism for the UTV Donn, stay safe and keep the moving forward coming !!
Thank you, Barton. Stay safe. 🖖
Its is a great engineered machine, awesome setup for linkage gear, may god bless!
This work was brilliant, and really enjoyable to watch.
You are like the Master of linkage. Love it Donn.
Very nice job!!!! Greetings from Hungary!!👌👏
Greetings from Estonia.
Bend your shifter at a 90 degrees and add an extention pointing upward at the end. It would entail pulling up and pushing down instead of forward and backwards but you can quickly adjust to that, I did on one of my builds so 20 years ago.

Perfect linkage job!!!
Nice job, love the project!!
This is really awesome, can’t wait to see it drive!
this plasma cutter is great, it does the job very well, and it saves hours of work to machine the sheets
I was thinking of one thing! once the assembly is finished you will dismantle everything to protect the steel from corrosion?
Prototype project, I'm very fan Good tools, good fabrication !
Awesome work. Un trabajo magnífico.
Looks like something you would find in the Terminator! Great vids.
Excellent video Gear Shift Linkage - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Build Ep.21, my respect frrom Venezuela.💯💯💯👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘🤘
Brasil!!!
Nice job!
Beautiful job 👍
Donn, I'm working at building a garden tractor using a few unconventional parts. I'm using a drive axle from a Hyster fork lift as it's complete, and will not require narrowing to work. It's about a meter wide from center to center on the tires. My engine is a Kubota 3 cylinder gas engine that I bought and had repaired, and that's in good condition. I plan to go hydrostatic transmission as it's simple to operate and maintain. I want this tractor to look old, so I'm not looking for all the "bells and whistles" found on some equipment today. It will just be a tractor. I'll be making a video big it as I move along, but I'm still acquiring parts for it...
Fantastic Engine earring!
All the best for your work bro.
Brilliant job on the linkage Donny. Yr a wizard!
Cheers man!
Ingenious, creative, astounding. Pret-ty Good. 😉 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome job !!
Fascinating, as always.
In case you didn't know you are a great engineer. Love it something from nothing awesome 👌
Gear shoft linkage, thanks for sharing boss
All those linkages melted my brain.
Always happy to watch you
Looking great
Your doing some really impressive work here sir keep it up
Welcome to the most beautiful series😍
Awesome video.... Keep Them Coming
If you think that gear linkage is a bit awkward you should try driving the one tonne Land Rover Forward Control, these were only sold to the British Army and I think their primary role was as artillery gun tractors. They had the 3.5 litre engine that was fitted in Range Rovers but the engine was behind the front seats so the gear lever was behind the driver's seat and was enormously long!
Z wielką przyjemnością i ciekawością oglądam Twoje dzieło...👍🇵🇱😃😃
Can't wait to see driving offroad
Very nice job
BEAUTIFUL!
Love seeing CAD to a working product, that cnc must save you some time!
Looks good. More please.

great job man!!!
very nice job on the gear linkage, looks well solid....
Cheers man!
Can't wait to see some off road action with this thing 🤩 Congrats, awesome build
I can't wait either. I've looked up some muddy spots already. Let's hope I can test the 4x4 soon before they dry up. 😁
@@DonnDIY Not sure how the terrain is in your area, but here in Romania we have mud spots even when it gets hotter outside so you should find some mud anyway 😁
You're a clever young man. Cheers from Sweden. 📐🍻✏
