    • I'm puzzled by your inability to think of other stories that focus more on the settings. Lots of stories do. Especially video games which mostly have silent protaganists that are plopped into a world without much explanation. The setting is all the game has. Silent Hill is a perfect example. Pretty much any haunted house movie. Lots of movies about virtual realities (Matrix, Tron). I would say even the original Halo was more about the setting. That was a heavy focus of the advertising. What the hell is this mysterious ringworld? That was the focus. A lot of historical dramas are focused on the setting. Jurassic Park has much less focus on characters and a lot more on how the park was built and why it is failing, specifically written/filmed as an example of how Chaos Theory works. Bioshock again is about the downfall of a great city. There is a great character element to it as well but I'd have to say the setting takes centre stage. Many Bethesda games are more about the world and lore. I can't even give a shit about the characters in most of their games and I don't think the writers do either lol. Just a few examples off the top of my head. Otherwise, good video as always dude!

Not so much for real Halo fans who have played them all for years, but it’s forces everyone, especially those not very familiar with the franchise (outside of Chief) to understand the gravity of how fucked humanity was the whole time. And whine Spartans and especially Chief are insane. There’s only so many of them to be thrown at the covenant.

  • "Six! That AI chose you. She made the right choice." I remember hearing that line for the first time, and it gave me chills. It pays homage to the relationship between Cortana and Chief. For example, at the beginning of Halo 3, Cortana made a reference about how she could've chosen any Spartan she wanted, but she chose John because he was the luckiest of them all; he's also the bravest and the best of the Spartans as well. Cortana made that same decision with Noble Six. He was simply the best of Noble Team. And as a player, you feel emboldened because the game puts you in the shoes of Six. You ARE Noble Six, the Spartan who passed the mantle of responsibility.

Just remember: That pussy Jun retired (yeah whatever he supposedly was too depressed over the loss of his entire squad, but Chief lost way more comrades that he GREW UP WITH *cough* Spartan II program in a nutshell *cough* ) Six could have been just as good as Chief, I mean the dude was a solo headhunter in all likelihood before being shipped to Reach.

  • I couldn't agree more with the whole "not every soldier gets remembered for their sacrifices, but war shouldn't be glorified either" theme of Halo: Reach. Take Jorge's death. Jorge made a heroic sacrifice. He took out the Covenant command ship. He did everything that was necessary, in the situation at hand, to defend his home. He achieved his objective successfully. And yet, immediately after he died, his sacrifice was nullified.

    • Yeah I love Reach for what the story is. The whole team is so bad ass and you get to experience all their roles in the missions and get to know them and how invincible Spartans seem to be. Yet it also shows how brutal and down to eart Halo's world can be even though Noble Team seems like it could mop every floor. It also makes Master Chief seem even stronger for those who like him, he's truly special after seeing how Noble Team fell, they did everything near perfectly, yet the force of the world outshadows even the best Spartans.

His goal is to see their downfall and avenge his brother more than anything else. The closest we get to a story about noble team was the live action trailer where the original Noble six died and Kat lost her arm Also, imagine Noble Six made it onto the autumn. 1 UNSC ship. 1 Halo ring. One covenant fleet. 2 hyper lethal Spartans.

Edit: Also one of my favorite touches of the scene where your character says "Sorry I came alone" is it's after 2 of the longest missions in the game and being separated from the rest of the squad. It takes so long before you or Nobel 6 can even really process the death of George.

But when noble 6 says "negative, I have the gun" refusing to leave and ensuring that the Pillar of Autumn can get away safely, I just can't help myself. I dunno about you but I looked at Noble six as myself, I was him, I wasn't simply playing as him I kinda forgot that other people had the same character. For the first time in a Halo game I felt like I was there, everything was on my shoulders and I had a duty. I felt like I was going to die with six when he made that choice, and when he died I felt like I lost a part of myself along with him. Sorry, I hate being feely but I dunno how else to get my point across for this game.

With Chief, there was a bit of immersion, but in Reach, you customize Noble 6 to change what his armour looks like, to what YOU like. He pretty much never talks so that you can respond to the characters in your mind as if you were Noble 6. That's why Reach is great, because your spartan is shaped to seem like YOU were caught in this conflict as hyper lethal spartan. It makes you feel just as special as Chief.

  • I think Halo Reach and Rogue one have a lot in common with each other. They have similar themes of the night being darkest just before the dawn. We see the lowest point of the Rebellion and UNSC, and the need for hope in their respective universes. Where Rogue One sets the stage for Luke Skywalker to save the galaxy, Reach sets it up for the Master Chief.

      @TotallyRealistic@TotallyRealistic5 жыл бұрын
    • TotallyRealistic it wasn't retconned completely. I'll have to find it but they actually fit Reaches story with the book Fall of Reach. It's not perfect but it does work. Personally I Follow the books and I just think of Reach as a game and just a game. Btw idk how anyone else felt when they first read Fall of Reach but it's what got me hooked on Halo and I was 13 or so and I been a fan and reading the books ever since. I wish they would have left the Forerunners more mysterious and I wish they never appeared in the games. I also love the Black ops of ONI in the books. I wish we had a game that was about the insurrection while playing as a Helljumper squad. Kinda like Halo Odst but I wanna feel more human. I felt like you could play like a Spartan still in that game. I shouldn't be able to melee a Brute as just a normal guy. A game based around more tactics and strategy rather than run and gun. Being able to call in air strikes, having squads where every member had a specific duty (heavy weapons, sniper, medic etc.) And always feeling like you are hopelessly outmatched when coming across a group of brutes or elites. Until the SAW came in Halo 4 I never understood why the UNSC never had a light machine gun. So in this dream game of mine the soldiers would have one for the heavy weapons soldier. Sorry for rambling,kinda stoned and just talking bout halo and the what ifs.

Also, whatever helmet you have on cosmetic wise is the one that ends up in the cutscene when Cortona is talking at the end. Last level has some awesome details, the marines holding out in small rooms against the enemies, some areas boarded up w stuff put in the way of the doors to keep the covenant out. The entire game has an amazing back against the wall feeling. It feels like a real world with a real struggle against an overwhelming enemy force.

  • Jun always interested me. He’s this cool sniper wearing green armor, and with a helmet that kinda looks like Chief’s, but his personality was so different and had an interesting twist on what we knew about the Spartan IIIs. He has this one line, which doesn’t come from the campaign but instead his firefight voice: “I kill the enemy, but do not hate them.” To me that said so much about him compared to his brethren. The Spartan IIIs were war orphans who joined up to fight the Covenant after their families died in the war, and most were ultimately disposable heroes out for revenge, yet here was this guy who presumably had been around for years given his appearance without his helmet who had tons of covvie kills under his belt yet bore no animosity towards them. I always though that was pretty cool, definitely got me thinking as a kid when I first played the game.

  • I love this game the first one I ever played seriously & honestly it's my favorite for a lot of reasons first you are the protagonist it's unique as you are the main character along with your comrades but it's not a character-based story but it doesn't need to be it's more of a mix between the tragedy of war the characters who fought it & where they fought it & why they fought it the best example of why it doesn't need to be a character-based story is myself when Noble team dies one by one it was like watching your comrades die as you fought alongside them as a team & this is the element that was needed in a Halo game a game that has you on a team that you care about overtime people who hated Reach may not have realized it but you slowly start to care about the characters to the point where it might not be noticeable to them it's setting based because it's a story that emphasizes what your fighting for not who your fighting for that's why it feels like your team is shrouded in mystery you don't know their backstory their motivations why they are the way they are because it's not truly about them it's about the planet they're defending, you also can't forget that this game is about the time before Master Chief & how Cortana was created in the first place & why they were even there in the first place the lore fanatics of Halo hate this game because there's next to no lore behind it because the lore is solved in a way that's not satisfying to them because it talks about the one's before Master Chief & the origins of Cortana & why the battle between the humanity & the Covenant is fought & solves almost all the lore behind Halo, it's also important to note that you are Master Chief before Master Chief except for a different personality & different goals, the ending is also heartfelt & very bittersweet because you die alone it's not satisfying to die alone you feel empty as you watch yourself as the Lone Wolf die alone it kinda sums up how Bungie left alone as a studio that was told to leave alone it's not a game meant to make you feel happy or satisfied but more upset & paranoid when the Campaign's all over & done with because you wonder why you fought at all if you were gonna die & there seems to be no real purpose in the haters eyes because when they finish the game they ask themselves why they even did it at all the haters of this game that finished it feel like the whole thing was a big waste of their time, & the idea of strategizing in this war & watching the tragedy of normal soldiers doesn't feel as traumatizing as watching your team die because you didn't care for them but you still knew that they died with purpose just like your team the reason people hate this game is because they failed to realized that they died with purpose & that this game was never a character-based story I feel like this represents a common problem with videogames & it's that everyone expects a character-based story that's incredible & with a whole ton of purpose but everyone seems to forget that there is hidden meanings behind the way that you die & why it's written like Reach but it's just so weird to me as to why people piss all over games like Reach but I don't know.

  • Reach was the first proper halo game that I played on my own console, halo holds a special place in my heart and gaming life. I was never allowed to play any of the Halos when I was younger and being born in 2001, I am the same age as the halo franchise, these games were all my friends talked about in primary school (elementary for anyone who isn't from Aus), I felt so left out. After years of hype and anticipation, my friends bragged to me how they just got Halo 3 on the new Xbox 360. That night my mother said I could play Reach, I was 10 or 11 so it had just come out. That's when it all started, and I'll never forget it, I was absolute dog shit at the game but I still had the best time. I could finally contribute to the hype and anticipation. I was invited to halo LAN parties and sleepovers. It was a bit of a prime time and I'll never forget it. Unfortunately, that would be short-lived as my mates all got into the CoD hype, never been a big CoD fan, at all really. I was once again left to my own devices. "Halo, it's finished." But for me? "No, I think we're just getting started" My love for Halo lives on to this day as one of my favourite game franchises of all time. Remember Reach

It’s a very easy story to pick up, because there’s nothing a director needs to add to make it more about what it is. Dunkirk was about Dunkirk, and the people in it were all so important, yet unimportant. Again, Dunkirk is definitely setting driven, but I feel like the comparison is too easy! :)
