Why is Halo 5's Campaign So BAD!? (Part 1) Marketing, Expanded Lore, & Intro Cinematics

Halo 5 has one of the worst campaigns I have ever played through in it's entirety. And it is the worst in the Halo franchise. But what exactly went wrong with it? And why is the story disappointing to so many fans?
In this video, the Act Man dives into the campaign, and talks about the reasons why the Marketing, Expanded Lore, and Opening Scene set up Halo 5's campaign to fail.

If I'm being honest having so many Spartans took away from being the spartan. This game just didnt make me feel like a badass spartan. Reach handled it much better.
I always thought it was kinda stupid how many spartans exist now. reach was the last stand of the spartans. masterchief was like the last hope of humanity. that’s it’s pretty intense. for me anything after 3 is just filler. 4 could have existed but they handled it poorly imo
All this time we were eluded to the last hope for humanity, it made us feel like the last one and there was no hint in games or other spartans other than reach. Now theyre all just copy and pasted and the feeling of being a Spartan or a last hope is gone
Oof, if Reach handled Spartans better than this game's depiction must have been really fucking aweful.
@@pezdispencer113 it was a big oof, they were corny and annoying. Not much screen time meant we didnt care, they weren't memorable enough plus they were just power Rangers

The only thing about the marketing that wasn’t a lie was Chief’s visor being broken.......

I listend to hours of a prequel podcast all excited about the storyline and it was completely irrelevant
And then it didn't distort vision during gameplay like it did in reach. That should be a crime.

KZheadr Analyst People complain about 343 "ruining" halo, yet if Bungie, the makers of Destiny, stayed as Halo developers, they'd fuck up worse with Halo.
Typhova How do you know what exactly? Can you see things that others can't? Can you see different Universe as well ? If Bungie stayed they would be still with Microsoft and plenty of Bungie that quite different would of stayed. Not to mention they wouldn't have to start from scratch since they know Halo since the company was created.
KZheadr Analyst You're contradicting yourself right now, how do you know they'd be doing well right now? Can you see different universes as well? I'm basing my thoughts from what is currently happening. If you gave your kid a new car after he had an old one already and he crashes it, he wouldn't have crashed the old one, right? You can't see different universes!

Marvel movies have better openings. Well, except for almost all of the Thor movies. Ragnarok was awesome though.
@TheDestroyer2alltrollsYes, agreed. It is a garbage movie but compared to other Marvel movies it's pretty good. Halo 5 similarly is a garbage game but is even worse compared to other games. I think only "Sea of Thieves" can compare to Halo 5's shittiness.

True Halo 5 was nothing to what it's marketing advertised.
I'm starting to think if they even had thought about it. They would tell their detractors that oh you should have guess that you're supposed to experience the story of Halo 5 with the trailers. And the excuse to avoid having the same we hiked the s*** out of absolutely nothing like beaks from the DuckTales reboot with his Tada idea. Which was basically nothing tada. But at least beaks had a plan of stealing someone else's invention and playing it off as the investment. These guys had nothing and came forward with nothing and still expected praise for nothing. Five years of lore and build up going back to the Kilo-5 trilogy of books just to be unceremoniously killed in the first mission of the game. That's Halo 5 in a nutshell: Completely ignoring all established canon to go it's own, shitty way.
What I liked about Halo: Combat Evolved was the mystery of the Forerunners. Not knowing is what moves us. 🌿

The only piece of “essential material” that I actually got and recommend is “New Blood”, even if you don’t like Halo 5. In fact, it has very little to do with the Halo 5 story other than how Buck became a Spartan, that’s it. It details what happened to the team from Halo 3 ODST, including how the Rookie died.
+Tristan Hunter I read that book and yeah I agree. I like that book, but it’s really flawed with bad continuity (the events in the book are out of order which spoils some major plot points) and the Rookie’s death (I’m not saying him being killed off was bad, but the way he was killed off was unbelievable considering he was able to survive against and kill enemies much bigger and tougher than him like Brutes but ends up being murdered by another human being who was a nobody).
@Legion You mean a former member of Alpha-Nine? By the way, Captain Ingridson was never an ODST nor in the UNSC, period.
@Legion Mickey only double-crossed Buck and Romeo, he never tried to kill the Rookie nor any of his other fellow members of Alpha-Nine. He only tried detaining or imprisoning Buck and Romeo. He was against killing other human beings.
I hate that they killed rookie in a book smh

Swagshoes68 Either A) she stayed dead B) She never died C) She came back but in fractures and not a full piece, so Chief had to search around the galaxy to find her fractures.
That wouldn't have made sense. There were forerunner allies to the flood (Corrupted AI) but it doesn't seem like the human AI's are advanced enough or useful enough for what the flood would want. What does Cortana 'control'? The fire and flight controls to The Pillar of Autumn, basically a flying fortress, other AI handle cities and such, but all of this PALES in comparison to what one like 343 Guilty Spark was given: The Controls to a superweapon, The ability to control and manuever Sentinals, which are far stronger then 'humans' The ability to manufacture en mass such things as sentinals and enforcers. Sorry this was a nerdy comment. lol

Has anybody else realized that the Halo series is going through the exact same thing as the Star Wars movies? Original Trilogy: Brilliantly sets up the heroes, villains, weapons, vehicles, and motivations for the universe they exist in. Known as perhaps the greatest Space Action series in their respected platforms. Reach=Rogue One: Prequel. Main character is unimportant but more skilled than the NPCs/extras. The team is killed off as they deliver a valuable piece of technology to the ship that escapes and sets up the very beginning of the entire series. Reach/Rogue One are both enjoyed by almost everybody. (Halo does not have a prequel trilogy, so I won't mention Star Wars' prequels) Sequel trilogy: Changed the art style and design of clothing, vehicles, weapons, and buildings; not exactly something people wanted, but we rolled with it. The first entry to the sequels was decent for some, but terrible for others. But then the second entry to the sequel comes along and holy cow were we unhappy. We are disappointed by characters from the original trilogy because they are nothing like they were back then (Luke/Cortana), we spent so much time with characters we didn't like (Rose/Locke), and political messages were smothered in our faces (Women are superior to men/ Justice for the enslaved AI's). After seeing the dumpster fire that was Rise of Skywalker, I am very concerned for Halo: Infinite
Same can be said for Gears of War.
Jamie Arnold spread the word.
They badly need to move on to new ip's
Rise of Skywalker was way better than last Jedi though. I had fun watching it. The characters didn’t make me cringe every other sentence lol not great but it’s was fun enough. Never want to see it again. I almost left during last Jedi
To compare the Halo sequels to the Star Wars sequels is an insult to the Halo sequels. At least Halos 4, 5 and Wars 2 are their own new storyline that isn’t copying the old games wholesale.
Here are the things Microsoft should've done. 1. Release Halo 4 as a launch title for Xbox one so they can finish up a better story. 2. Delay MCC for the Xbox One S 3. Never make Halo 5 guardians. 4. Should of made Halo infinite the 5th entry of the franchise.
Better yet Try bungie with respect and keep em far away from activison

Exactly! Most people don't care for the novels at all so they'll be lost on the story a bit. For example Jul Mdama. All that development shoved into a book, just to kill his ass off in the game. Wtf..
Ghosts of Onyx was the last Halo book I’ve read so I always thought that Halo 4 was a retcon.
@@deeta000 what??? Halo reach retconned fall of reach and onyx
@@centurymemes1208well halo reach technically retconned the fall of reach novel. Certain things like the brutes not being present in the book but were present in the game. Cortana somehow not being with Chief during the events of Reach even though in the book she was with him the whole time up until they left the planet and how Halsey interacted with Spartan IIIs in the game but she didn’t get introduced to the Spartan IIIs until Ghost of Onyx. What angered me the most was the mistreatment of the blue team. As a hardcore halo fan who have read the books, I was so excited that blue team was actually coming back. I have always wanted to see how fast Kelly could actually run, or how amazing Linda was with a sniper, but they never had a chance to shine in the game. Blue team was never portrayed in the legendary status that it should be, and most important of all, they should be the family that John has ever known since the age of 6. They should have acted much closer in the game, but to my disappointment they were just like any other generic squad mates cloned from countless video games. Screw you 343 for ruining blue team and for shoving generic Locke down our throats. Even if Locke was inevitable, I would have been much happier if the boss fights were taking on the blue team one at a time, each having their own unique abilities and needed the players to overcome them. Imagine how amazing it could have been..even if it meant killing Kelly Linda and Fred, then master chief could have an actual reason to hate and fight Locke :(
Exactly blue team were the best Spartans in the spartan 2 program and they kicked major ass through the entire war
I wish I could see Kelly just sprint around and Mach 5 :( Or see Linda dangle upside down from a rope and snipe people But nope. Team Osiris happened.
Yup I got all the books for my birthday. I was excited to play alongside blue team but I got slapped in the face
I read all the books up until Halo 4 came out. I'm not going to waste my time with any more, I may go back and re-read those old books though.
I know this is old, but I loved the older books (there's been 8 since i dropped Halo holy shit) and after playing the campaign at a friends house I had literally no idea that Blue team was the same ones from the books. For claiming to be big fans of the extended universe they mishandled that so hard.
H4 Lasky: I was sent here with orders to prevent you from leaving and going awol. But take this fully armed pelican and good luck to you both on stopping the Didact. H5 Lasky : Locke! Arrest that man! He refused to return to the infinity when I told him to.
Look at how they ruined a potentially great character
Look how they massacred my boy
They could of justified chief going rogue by making him kill other Spartans because they are killing civilians. The spartan program was designed to put down civil war and revolts originally. Since the covenant are defeated they could make it so the Spartans are doing their original purpose. Eventually it gets to chief cause he keeps thinking about what Cortana said about not being a machine. So in order to save lives he kills Spartans he's with and is declared a traitor. The themes could be about being a good soldier, ends justify the means, PTSD, soldiers being machines and so forth

The worst thing Halo 5 did, for me: it made me question whether the previous titles were any good to begin with. Let me explain: The series has been a substantial part of my life. I sank countless hours into Halo CE and 2 and 3. And even later titles, like Reach and 4, while not as good, were still fun to me. And I have come to realize that the story is a big part of why I love Halo so much. It was the first time lore in a video game really sucked me in. I was worried the writing would take a hit when 343 took over, but 4's story was really damn good. I had faith the franchise was in good hands. And then I played this. I was mesmerized at just how awful the writing was, how cobbled together it felt. And after that, I started noticing flaws with everything else in the game; the poor sandbox balancing, the pitifully short, obviously rushed campaign, the bland level design, the cringy dialogue, the shifted focus from campaign to multiplayer, the dumbing down of the gameplay to appeal to a more COD audience, movement being made more sluggish, bad enemy AI, visuals being dumbed down compared to beta, etc. It all started to leave a really bad taste in my mouth. I wanted to go back to previous titles, to get this trash pile off my mind. But when I did, I'd find those exact same flaws sprinkled in other titles in the series. The repetitive level design in CE, the shitty weapon balancing, rushed campaign and downgraded graphics in Halo 2, the slow as molasses player movement and sepia color palate in Reach, the laughable dialogue and multiplayer focus in Halo 3, the dogshit AI in Halo 4. Those flaws had always been there. I couldn't stop seeing them when I played through. It got to the point that, for the longest time, I didn't want to play a Halo game. I've thankfully managed to get back into the series as of late, and come to realize that many of those flaws weren't as egregious as I initially thought, and were more a product of technical limitations and time constraints than bad design. But I will never go back to Halo 5. It tainted the reputation of one of my favorite series, and nearly gaslit me into thinking the franchise was always bad. And I can never forgive it for that.
I played Halo 5 before any of the other games in the series, and I just assumed that the story didn't make sense because I skipped ahead to the fifth game. But after seeing this... wow.
As a guy who never read the books and then blue team was introduced in the second mission... I was like WTF?!! I thought Master Chief was the last OG spartan!! Who the hell are these guys and where did they come from? No explanation in any of the games and now you're suddenly gonna slap this in the player's face. 343i needs to get this out of their heads that campaign is meant for the hardcore lore enthusiasts while the rest of the players only play multiplayer anyways so its no big deal if they are lost... what kind of logic is that?!
To understand Blue Team, you only need to read 'The Fall of Reach'. It's dirt cheap too; I got it for £5 YEARS AGO!!! It's probably barely a quid now.
TRITON K175 yeah the fall of reach its a good movie for explaining the Spartan ll program and it is quite cheap but why should I watch it just to understand the Spartans and how blue team was formed
RedLightGamers if you really want an explanation as to where was blue team after the events of Reach simply go read Ghost of Oynx

I had read the fall of reach (luckily) but I also immediately hated the way Blue team was handled. Was cool to see them but the immediate thought it, wait, its Blue team from the book, where's their introduction? How did they hook up with chief again? Thank f*** I read Fall of Reach or I'd have no clue who these people are. Just spent a pointless mission with that dude from the trailer I don't care about and Buck and now I'm with Blue team and they don't even get an intro....
You forgot to mention, that you have to play all of the Spartan ops missions in Halo 4, to understand why Halsey was captured.

NO NO NO NOT THOSE AGAIN
True
They were God awful
No no you don't really understand how dumb that scene 13:11 is The covenant and their massive army brought down the UNSC greatest space research base, codename Reach (where they created the fuckin chief) and decimated the galaxy best squad on that planet in 12 days....12 DAYS. They were already a few months away from winning the god damn human-covenant war in 2525. This scene was humiliating. The elites are the best of the best of the sangheili warriors. When a sangheili warrior is given a blade that means they have what it takes to be the guard of the council or higher ups (of what was). It basically means they are officers. The fact one idiotic spartan took down 5 officers at the closest range is a horrible way to make this scene.
I like how they built up cortana into this dangerous foe that was going to light the rings then in the next game she is just beaten before the game even begins and replaced with a new enemy. So basically halo wars 2 was more relevant than halo 5.
I just started Infinite after replaying 5, and 2 hours in I'm so baffled. Wasnt Cortana about to tyrannize the galaxy with giant robots? Now i'm going up against a Tartarus Brute rip off and apparently Cortana is already defeated somehow?? Wtf.
I can't express in words how much I hated that opening scene. I like to think of the covenant as the formidable opponents I faced growing up with through the original games and not these pathetic targets that don't fight back. I immediately judged the game before I even started playing because of that scene
because it the fall of the covenant and the banished are the new threat if you ever played halo wars 2 you would know nothing sucks about halo 5 dont get all the hate its amazing and tbh alot people are ruining it because they know nothing about halo !
Okay, squeaker
@@The_Legend117 "because it the fall of the covenant"... they would still be the same soldiers with the same technology. But hypothetically lets say the during their fall training files were deleted. @@rodneylittle5756 is still worse than Halo 2, 3 and Reach's multiplayers by far... Funny how even with sprint you still move slower than you did in Halo 3, yet it slows the game down by preventing movement. Also, crouch jumping > clamber. Weapons have less character to them, req boxes are just more modern style CoD bullshit, and the maps design is far far worse than halos 1-3.

4 years later and I stopped playing after finishing the campaign I only reached SR23, meanwhile in bo3 (game from the same year) I reached prestige 10
As someone who've read the novels, I was SUPER excited for Blue Team's appearance. Marketing was dope. And then the game came out. I highkey wish that Blue Team didn't appear in this mess of a game at all.
Blue team was Fred, Linda, John etc right? I remember reading The Fall of Reach, The Flood and First Strike last year, great books, but I kinda forgot most of it! 😅
This channel does not exist. pretty much, also don't worry I haven't remembered much of the other spartans as well (aside from those who died aboard Unyielding Hierophant). On a more positive note tho it makes us re-read the novels again, good lords I specifically enjoyed First Strike.
I think they put them in the game specifically to deceive people like you lol. Remember the Chief vs. Locke fight where the 6 squad characters just kinda stand around as if they’re looking for something to do? I think that mostly sums up their role in the story.
The Big Yes deceived? I feel betrayed my dude. They just inserted Blue Team for the sake of having coop stuff even tho they don't serve much purpose in the story. Now I can't really be hopeful about 343i integrating the expanded lore stuff into future games.
@thebigyes8482 Blue Team already went through the portal. Osiris stood down because if they'd jumped Chief he would've been destroyed.

"Just an ODST"
I felt that they fucked with Buck's character. Sure his signature sarcasm was and cynicism was there, but a lot of the stuff he did was out of character. Him becoming a Spartan IV in the first place goes against what he was like in ODST; a muddy boots hardened leader of soldiers, not part of a flashy clique of Spartan super soldiers. Plus the fact that he just seemed to go along with working with the elites, after they glassed Reach and nearly killed him time after time. He was out of character far too often.
Bay is Bae nobody cares. Halo 5 was good and that is a fact.

we miss you so much bungie. damn its so sad.
Bungie worked miracles. The Halo Franchise is to Bungie as the Mantle is to the Forerunners.
John Stuart not even joking whats the mantle? You can see how little i remember from halo 4 or 5? Didnt even finish 5
+TwinBorn The Mantle is the Forerunners' responsibility to safe-guard all life-forms in the universe.
The game they shat out two years ago was shit too..
Hell I didn't even finish 4. Once 343 got hold of Halo I was uneasy. I gave it a shot because it seemed like it might be a pretty good game. The only thing "good" that came out of it was watching the ending cinematics(legendary or otherwise) that I didn't even get to myself. The story bored me and I went straight to multiplayer. I can't imagine what 5 is like now after seeing this video.
I loved how 3 books setup jul’mdama as the new threat to the UNSC/Elites and dude gets killed in a cutscene
343 would have gone down as legends if they made Halo 5 a two part game. Part 1 you deal more with Locke and his team and how he Came to be and how he came to hunt chief, to include a lore accurate fight between the two where Locke realizes… he’s not the one. Part 2 ends part 1 in the realization that Locke NEEDS to help chief find Cortana. They save Cortana from corruption BECAUSE the didact “hacked” her and was using her to activate the guardians. Cortana at this point either fully “dies” or is saved and no longer suffers rampancy.
There are so many developers that manage to weave expanded universe into the actual games without alienating non-EU players and giving players that do enjoy the EU a ton to appreciate and discover about the story and world. Franchises like Dead Space, the Starcraft or Warcraft series and so many more are prime examples of how to let people who just play the games enjoy the games and how to give people that absolutely adore the lore and universe a ton to love 343 could've done that, but instead of having EU compliment and provide greater context or understanding of the story, it becomes a barrier to entry, and that's a shame. Halo 1-Reach and even 4 to an extent didn't rely on EU to simply enjoy the campaign, it only made the experience more enjoyable when something that happened in the books or comics was referenced in some Terminal, Data Log or cutscene dialogue. If you didn't get the reference or understand the full weight of the references you were fine, the game didn't use these references as story focal points and they generally explained a summarized version of what the reference is about to give at least some context to what was being showed to the player Halo 5 doesn't fail because it uses and references EU in its story, Halo 5 fails because it requires you to have expansive knowledge of the EU just to enjoy or understand the opening cutscene. Maybe that's what you actually meant, but I just figured I'd throw my 2 cents in regardless
This right here, man! EXCELLENT COMMENT! And you give perfect examples of other games that are able to please both crowds without alienating one or the other
Keep up the fantastic work man, I didnt realize Halo content creators of this quality existed, but Im gonna have to binge your channel because every video is absolutely top notch and Im loving every second of it I seriously cant thank you enough for all of the thought pieces and well done analysis videos. The first trilogy for Halo did a great job in that aswell. As someone who knows a good amount of Halo's backstory and lore, I was still confused as fuck as to what was going on.
Illuvial whats EU?

Bringing Cortana back was a bad move imho. It serves no purpose to do that. Yeah, she as a favorite character, but it was also a great opportunity to teach us how to deal with loss. The more you like/love someone, the harder it is to let go and I believe it's important for all of us to learn how to overcome it.
In my own head canon, the series ended with Halo 4. Master Chief abandoned his life as a machine and became a human and that was a great place to end in my opinion especially since they showed his eyes at the end.

"You have to read a comic book, before you play a video game .. we've entered a new level of nerd" -Conan O'Brien
As someone who read all of the novels released before Halo 5, I can safely assure you that reading the novels does not make Halo 5's story any better. As a matter of fact, I'd argue that it actually makes the story worse, because there were a lot of cool things in the books that got little to no payoff in Halo 5.
I had a feeling that was the case
Master Chief? You mind telling me what you’re doing in this game? Sir. Doing it for money.
BTW halo nightfall was garbage

I am literally surprised they were never sued for click baiting because the trailer stated or acted like you could chose an ending where Chief or Locke dies
They would have said "that is why its called #huntthetruth" or some shit like that.
I understand now why none of the marketing was ever shown in French media. Put quite bluntly, French law actually makes those trailers illegal so Microsoft probably decided it was better not to advertise here unless they wanted a first world judicial system fucking them up.
How would they make a game following that? You are stupid if you thought that was a possibility.
>halo >choose an ending Sacrilege
@@alexanderholzer7392 Nay, it was heresy!
You know what would be badass. If they made a halo game based off of buck becoming a spartan, and forgetting the shitty halo 5 plot
The opening scene was suppose to show how good lock and his team actually are, being able to take in sooo much. And that’s why they were picked to hunt down the best Spartan 117
Doesn’t help that the enemies are a bunch of dipshits who don’t know how to fire a gun or fly a ship.
Its still a dumb af cutscene that doesnt fit Halo's narrative and storytelling in any way. It looks like the writer Just tried to fit a generic action scene from a movie featuring Keanu Reeves or The Rock and think Its brilliant. No, Its fucking not. The Covenant are known for being formidable foes and not weaklings like the scene represented them. Remember How in Halo Reach the Noble team, which were Spartans III, was struggling to defend Reach from the covenant attack and How they eventually Lost the planet and It got destroyed by the same army? Keep in mind that each Spartan's generation gets weaker due to being less exposed to the same dangerous experiments that created past Spartans, John 117 is a Spartan II while Locke and his team are Spartans IV, there no fucking way he would even be able to be equal to Chief, and realistically the Spartan IVs would get killed the moment they started doing those fancy jumps because the covenant are a serious threath to be dealt with. Remember thel' Vadam? Or the arbiter for easy remembering, before he got punished in Halo 2 and became the arbiter he was the commander of the covenant army that destroyed Reach, His army wiped out almost the entire Noble Team, and Noble Six himself. And them Halo 5 expects me to believe that the weaker generation of Spartans known as Spartans VI would easily destroy the Covenant like They're grunts? Please.

You're a fake Halo fan HaloFollower.
My biggest problem with Halo 5 is the fact that nothing happened at all to create any emotion whatsoever! In Halo CE, you found the flood which was scary, and you lost the whole entire Pillar of Autumn and your whole entire crew, in halo 2 the elites get kicked out and 2 prophets die, a bunch of characters that have been building up throughout the whole series die in Halo 3, and in Halo Reach you and your team die and you lose an entire planet. At least in Halo 4 it seemed as if Cortana died which created emotion, but in Halo 5, I guess Cortana becomes evil for uh... some reason or another...
Uncultured
The action scenes are visuals are gorgeous but it's all for nothing. There's no reason to care because everything we cared about in the marketing is absent
Spartan Locke and his group were clearly not playing on Legendary in that opening scene
What went wrong? The team that made spartan ops for halo 4 is the team that made halo 5. From what I understand, the majority of the team that actually made the good bits of halo 4 left 343 industries early in halo 5s development. That's why it's pretty bad.
@Litza nah Halo 4 did have amazing parts open your eyes wider
Litza The story is the best one in Halo.
Halo 4's story would've been awesome if everything we needed to understand was in the story and not described through terminals. It still had its emotionally moving moments and cool moments; Introduction to Didact, Chief disobeys Delrio, Cortana's death. Wasn't good in comparison to the previous games but still pretty good. Chief and Cortana's relationship in the story was really well done, and ultimately ruined by her resurrection and being a villain in 5.
@@Fazer_600 Halo 4 had some of the best character writing in the franchise with a lot of it coming down to how John was reacting to the slow and painful death of someone he truly cared about and probably loved. The rest of the game just completely destroyed the overall mythos of the universe.
i always thought 343's campaigns where shit
+Nikos GR117 true
+Nikos GR117 Halo 4 certainly got a lot of flack at release, but given time (and the shit we got with Halo 5) it has made Halo 4 a better game story wise. Gameplay was still boring as hell, but the story has come into it's own.
+OozyGorilla no they made halo 4s ending mean nothing anymore because cortina gets out of charecter and turns bad. And it couldent be someone controlling here because she still loves chief. It's fucked
Oh, no. I agree. Halo 5 made everything plot related to Halo 4 irrelevant. What I'm saying is, the story and the storytelling grew on people. It now being irrelevant is ancillary to that fact.
Right? Halo 4's story was at least slightly compelling, but the campaign was from a gameplay and settting standpoint just stale and repetitive, lacking that halo magic.
whats worse about the game is the fact that the covenant design is almost as bad as halo 4. also it doesn't even feel like the player is the spartan it just feels like they are just controlling master chief
Also why in the hell would Master Chief need to wear a robe in the desert? I think that bothers me the most now
Even with or without reading the books, Halo 5 still is no different, still hard to understand anything
I agree, I've read all those EU materials except for Hunt the truth and Nightfall and it did nothing for the plot.
why is that so true?

I just keep rewatching these videos every so often, because they’re so god damn good! Even back then Act Man was blessing us with masterpieces like this
Plus that opening scene looked so cartoonish. They’re falling down a hill at what, 60 mph? And also shooting people? Lol ok
It reminds me about that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles scene
Halo 3: ODST introduced Buck, Dutch, Romeo, Mickey, Dare, and the Rookie effectively, I think. Even though some of the lines are clearly so that you know who is who: "How 'bout you show some respect, Romeo!" "Just sayin', Dutch..." "Dunno, Mickey..." The lines are delivered very naturally. In Halo 5 it seems like Chief's "Thanks, Kelly." was him looking to the audience and saying "Okay, did everyone catch that? Her name is Kelly. Kell-ee!" While it isn't necessarily "fair" to so aggressively drop the hammer on 343i for the shit-show that is Halo 5, I feel like when you're following the footsteps of Halo, you really need to put your best foot forward. You don't have to stop the rotation of the earth, 343i, but slow the spin down a little bit, we expected better.
Damn it, so true
Honestly, I’ve read and watched the majority of Halo’s extended lore, and I still thought the story was dog shit.
Why would you call yourself the Act Man and not title the parts as "Acts?"
Bungie released masterpieces on a rushed timescale and overhead pressure. 343 released dumpster fires with Hollywood-level funding and overhead support, repeatedly showing that they don't understand Halo as a story or a game. I don't understand how people can defend 343. Contrarianism maybe?

I'm late, so I dunno if I'll get much interaction. Nevertheless, I gotta say this. Marketing? Looking back on it, I can definitely say it's off. Chief facing down the Guardian was never present. Sadly. Hunt the Truth as well as the dynamic between Chief and Locke, though? I take it as the narrative HTT upheld itself to. ONI propaganda. Although it seems like it's necessary to know of expanded lore, it isn't. We've always yada-yada'd a lot of things even with Bungie Era Halo. Example? Johnson as well as Chief finding their way back to UNSC space. Earth nonetheless from Halo charted space. The Arbiter, breck-neckly introduced in the opening of Halo 2, which supposedly held a campaign against the UNSC in Halo CE. Overall, I believe every Halo has setup future installments well enough to not spoon feed us what we can already piece ourselves. New Spartans? Easy, SIV-Program was introduced in Halo 4. A new team of centralized character? Piece that from the former stated. It's the same as being introduced to Arbiter from the get-go. You don't need the extended to know them, however, you know them as you play along or you know them prior because of the Extended Lore. It's an either or without much needed balance outside of enrichment. Lastly, I say a big downer of the marketing was the ONI spin. ONI is a known boogeyman, yet not enough to every Halo player. The marketing was meant to be seen as ONI alienating Chief. Making him out to be Hero turned Villain. Thus giving public backing to the hunt of the most famous War Hero of the Era. What we got was the boring in the act of. The hype built didn't match the expectation. Simply because we all known Chief isn't getting killed. Nor is a famous actor getting cast just to die, unless you're CoD. More or less you expect what happens with the manhunt based on Buck's remark. "Y'know when they find out what we're doing, they're all going to hate us." Implying even members of the UNSC don't trust the propaganda placed by ONI to rationalize the hunting of the Spartan. Extended Lore? I understand honestly. It's homework more or less, but if you partake whether getting the summary or paying for it--it's not like you wasted anything. You simply enrich your story. Fuck Destiny Grimoire. That's the embodiment of storyless story. As for Halo, though, I mean it's been there since the beginning. We needed a book to even understand that Blue Team, other Spartans, and Johnson even existed prior or after certain events. How shady ONI was prior to ODST even remotely unveiling them. It's certainly not new to Halo, nor the last of it. Sadly, I think it hurts it more that we won't see much more of it come Infinite due to the backlash. If they find a better synergy, then by all means please do more. I love the extended universe. Especially in Bungie's Era because it was more than a Kid's version of Aliens bad, and Humans good that Bungie stuck to. Intro/Story? Story--you got me. I personally enjoyed it for the clustered mess it was. There was value to get from it. Especially if you know the Foreunner-Human conflict. It essentially sets up the resurgence of the Flood coming to test Humanity. Turning its advancements against them, this case being Cortana rather than Mendicant Bias. Twisting her with what she thinks is the Domain as well as the AI she turns to her side. Halsey's Intro--you got me there. Either a plot thread or meta commentary on her assuming she and John will be killed. If not Cortana. As for the overall action scene. I dunno. I disagree. Behind enemy lines works in the sense they quite literally drop behind a main battle line while on the clock. Taking out a large fraction of forces along their path before entering the main battle line. Spartan IVs are meant to be Spartans IIs yet cheaper and advanced. Sure, and I can't stress this enough, S-IIs are still stronger via augmentation, however, the iea most fanboys have saying they're the indefinite best is the same as saying the 300 Spartans, considerably the worlds best Warriors in their time, would be capable of beating modern day soldiers without breaking a sweat. Just because they found a method of making Spartans without abducting children and brain washing them until the ripe age of murder doesn't mean they any less effective. S-IIIs even had an 'ability' to operate beyond death. Pumped up with so much adrenaline was was able to fight with a large portion of his back blown out until falling to the ground dead when the fighting settled. As for the display of power and agility. The scene simply captures the prowess and speed of the new generation. A commentary you made about seeing the Old and the New. In Blue Teams intro we see the reserve-cut throat method the S-IIs use as they effortlessly dispatch Storm Covenant members with a trip into space. Vale entering the Phantom is mostly flare, however, when you consider Elites aren't as careless as Brutes and won't simply hack with friendless ahead, the reaction the Elites had is reasonable. It's like modern swordsman say when they'd just slash someone spinning about. Sure, but what about the moment they built? A fight is ensuring you live in the end. Killing someone mid pirouette still leaves the x factor of a renegade blade swinging at you. The Elite in the case isn't just going to slash the Jackals, and getting hit in any fashion by a Spartan isn't something you just shake off in a second. Her entry into the ship put a lot of favor in her court simple because none of the crew expected in. Sword or not, they're fighting the ships sway as well as the blunt trauma accompanied by 5 tons of armor slamming into them.

Just so you know, you can buy all the Escalation comics in 2 easy collections. Nice, right? Well, if you do that, you're forced to read through Palmer's origin story. Heck, Palmer is somehow one of Escalation's MAIN CHARACTERS! So frankly, you're better off going online and reading the relevant bits. Edit: Palmer somehow sneaks into Bad Blood, too. I kid you not, you're basically required to read about her in order to understand any of the expanded universe.
The worst part about it requiring a lot of pre reading/watching is that the majority is shit they made specifically for Halo 5 rather then continuing storylines from the trilogy, 4 or any of the old EU stuff. It's like they created this whole new set of lore that was specifically made for newcomers yet they put it all in comics and web shows. Should of seen this shit coming when the main villain in Halo 4 was killed unceremoniously in a comic. I was kind of disappointed in 4's story, yet it was done with a level of care that made me have faith in future storylines. Now I wonder if I'll even buy another Halo game, like this game just kills me on every level. It's truly amazing how a series can go from being so prestigious to a blatant cashgrab. I'll never get over the 100$ microtransaction either.
I thought Last Light and HTT were good.
The Didact was never quite killed. He was turned into a digital essence.
The Didact wasn't killed in the Comics. He was composed (even though that should be impossible), leaving him to be able to be brought back (and I think, was supposed to be the villan in Halo 5 in place of Cortana until the upheaval I think happened halfway through development derailed all that). However, that was only clarified by Brian Reed in an interview after the fact. I honestly believe that Halo 5 doesn't live up to the leadup in the EU and the marketing, not the other way around. Halo 5 doesn't make the EU or marketing shit, Halo 5 makes Halo 5 shit.
you sir have hit the nail on its head perfectly!
I was pissed off that they killed off the Rookie from ODST in the comics. I ONLY read about that from his page on the Wiki. What the fuck. And you know what killed him? The fucking rebels. Not the covenant or the Prometheans. The Rebels. Glory to the Empire.
God Halo Nightfall is so bad I didn't even finish it, shame because I actually loved Halo 4 Forward Into Dawn

I fastforwarded through all the episodes. It still counted as watching the series. Saved me a lot of time I would not have wanted to waste on a bad story.
+TheEliteGuy I don't want to question it, but how is Nightfall a fat ODST compared to Helljumper?
yeah forword into dawn was good but night fall was alright...I guess...
About the trailers, they sold Locke as a ruthless hunter who would take Chief head on and put him down without doubts, that is what hyped me up at that time.
It's funny because all these years later I finally decided to try Halo 5... and you know what the very first thing was I had ZERO idea what the hell was going on. I just replayed through Halo 1-4 + Reach and ODST and then I was like "Alright lets tackle Halo 5". Literally off the bat... WTF is going on. The dialog for Osiris is competely lost on me... they could have easily put in some simple exposition to fill players in who hadn't read all the expanded universe stuff... After like 4 missions I went to the internet to read up on the story elements I missed. Honestly it's like playing Halo 3 without playing Halo 2.
Halo 2 has the best opening scene. Finally seeing the civanent side of things, seeing an equivelant to chief, seeing chief again, and DIRECTLY linking the games together.
The marketing lies is what i'm most salty about.
Man I remember seeing them and being like: "Woah woah woah, Chief's betraying humanity?! What the hell going on? Oh my God is this the end of Chief?!" Then I watch the desert one "Wait is that Cortana?!" My brother: "she died man" Me: "what?!" (Btw parents stopped me playing halo after reach similar to the act man) Like I wanted to play this game so bad Then I remember seeing this chart of all this lore stuff and I was like "What the hell, I have to read all this?"
"I figure if God can hear how scared I am, so can everybody else..." ... No, no seriously, I will actually kill myself if somebody doesn't explain to me what the fuck that was even supposed to convey or mean... Did the writers ACTUALLY think that was supposed to be insightful?
if it was "If everyone in the world can hear how scared I am, so can God" that would make more sense. it wouldn't make sense for him to SAY it but it would be actual words and not nonsense
Serrously I never played ODST but I wouldn't think a ODST that became a spartan 4 would be someone that is scared enough to say it or to be scared in general.
I only played Halo 5 once, like partially, but my stepbrother bought it, one time is enough.
