The way Ricky's face lights up every time someone roasts him just warms my heart. This man is a slave to comedy. He can't help it. lol
Goddamn, that's a beautiful way to put it.
I heard him say when he was young, his brother told him he always had to say something if it was funny, damn the consequences...it worked out for Ricky and us.
Made my day 7 months ago, made my day today ❤ Best comment.

Well he did say he wanted to drink copious amounts of blood.

I love the relationship between these two. Colbert can accept Ricky's atheism, and Ricky can accept Colbert's faith. We should all be like that.
Indeed, this should not be anything noteworthy. Why is the US so intolerant these days? It was founded on religious tolerance, but there was always a strong streak of implacable intolerance, such as is otherwise found these days only in third world countries, and only a few of those.
Gottenhimfella yeah civilized behavior is seen as a unicorn lol
@@Gottenhimfella Because in the US the most important thing is to be right, especially when you're wrong.
@@Seekarr Wonderfully put. Thanks!
It's an act. They are actors....
Love that they can both joke and not take things too seriously. Stephen doesn’t get offended at Ricky’s atheism, Ricky doesn’t get offended when Stephen roasts him. Mutual respect.
When does Stephen roast Ricky ever? I've never seen a guest on his show get more cheers against Stephen and for Ricky when they debate atheism and religion. But saying that, Colbert has always taken the debate to a new subject when he knows hes losing and can't control the crowd.
@@daniellysohirka5079 Ohh the religious always take themselves VERY seriously.
Why would anyone find atheism to be offensive?
Their stark contrast in beliefs combined with the ability to respect one another intellectually, and have a great sense of humor about it, makes them talk show gold!
It also makes them great role models, filthy language aside.
The only truly filthy language are words used to tell a lie,or silence someone from speaking the truth.
Great role model who use homophobic slurs on national television.
hey +Corey Lahee , you're a trump supporter aren't you?
Of course, I love the liberal logic. "no nuance exists if you have a different point of view you must be a trump supporter" So fucking pathetic. Just as retarded as conservatives.
I think Colbert finds the fact Ricky doesn't like Lord of the Rings more offensive than the fact he's an atheist.
YES! And that's kind of cute.
+Gray Maven _more offensive than the fact he's an atheist_ That's funny. It really is. But "more offensive"? Doesn't that seem weird to you? Try the substitution test. "Colbert finds it more offensive than the fact that he's a Jew." How does _that_ sound? :) I just think it's funny. You could be an atheist yourself for all I know. But why in the world are so many people fine with others who don't believe in their god _except_ when it comes to those of us who don't believe in _any_ gods? Again, doesn't that seem weird?
Bill Garthright Excellent point, sadly that's the world we live in. Maybe because as Stephen points out, you can just dismiss other religions away as cults when you also believe, maybe because they see it as a direct threat to their own beliefs and their own sense of worth or maybe that most of the world still incorrectly believes that without religion there is no basis for morality.
Bill Garthright Is Atheism a religion like Judaism? 🤔 Also, you never heard anyone say worse than being "Black" or a "Jew" 😒 Those things do get said btw #MAGA
+luckyjason _Is Atheism a religion like Judaism?_ Say what? Maybe you should read my comment again. You seem to have missed the point.

my grandfather told me this “joke” 30 years ago..
Stephen Colbert is one of the few Americans who understands and loves to participate in genuine British banter and one of the few who can with the Brits 🤣😭
He hasn't got much competition with Gervais. I speak as a Brit - Mr Colbert is far above him intellectually. I'm only surprised that people here can't see that.
@@ljo642 Maybe, but believing in a made-up sky fairy is hardly the mark of an intellectual, especially on who states that only his made-up sky fairy is real, as opposed to all the other made up sky fairies. He admits this. Yes, very intellectual, I'm sure.

Shadowdrs somebody should pay him to make an audiobook version
Shadowdrs i think he will say to pause in between and give lecture about why hobbit have dirty toenails
Eh, he mispronounces everything, unfortunately.
Rawin Hilario Yeah, isn't that weird?
That isn't weird. In fact, being a brazilian, I totally understand it. Why? Because when I read something that I never heard, I figure it out on my own. And, since many words are made-up, you tend to get it wrong. Menzoberranzan, for exemple. How are you supposed to pronounce that? I only know because o Drizzt's audiobook
"['Cause] It's nonsense!" _"It's fantasy! What do you mean, like what's wrong with nonsense? Does everything have to be true to you?"_ *"OK, I'm a catholic."*
I think Colbert misunderstands what it means to not like fantasy. At least, for some people, (well, OK, me), it's not that for us, everything "has to be real", but it's just not very interesting when reality gets suspended, because when everything becomes possible, nothing is a surprise. As an example, plot twists are meaningless when they're achieved by fudging what's possible. To me, it's a bit like inheriting too much money and going shopping: it's no fun anymore when you can just say "I'll have everything in the shop"
@@Gottenhimfella I think not liking fantasy has more to do with how detached you like your fiction to be from your reality? Super Heros, while very out there, still operates from New York and enjoy most of the regular day to day tech you do
@@Gottenhimfella I guess it does take a bigger step to suspend your disbelief enough to be invested in the fate of Hobbits and Dwarves and Elves. Before I read Lord of the Rings, I was very sceptical about it - all the goofy sounding names and places... how could anybody ever care about Aragorn, descendant of Isildur, wielding the sword Andruil to defend Minas Tirith? It sounds bonkers, I do recognize that. But then Tolkien came along and somehow sucked me in. Because yeah, it's all made up, but with so much love and effort and detail that you can FEEL this universe living and breathing beneath the pages. And before I even realized, all the ridiculous names meant something to me and felt honestly more like history than the word salad they look like. And obviously, a fictional universe also has rules that you can't just break for a random plot twist (unless it's just a bad story, that happens in every genre). It needs to be consistent and believable, and that's a lot harder than it looks.
@@baguettegott3409 You make good points. Thanks for that thoughtful reply.

For anyone who's interested, no, the majority of Icelandic people do not actually believe in elves. We do avoid "disturbing" places that in olden days would have been considered an elf habitat, but it is mostly just out of tradition because Iceland is very focused on preserving its history and culture. The idea that all Icelanders believe in elves is just something we tell tourists.
Shhhh... don't tell Stephen. Let him have his two fantasies. Elves in Iceland and God.
He is very focused in converting Gervais

The icelandic law thing is not because they actually believe in elves, but because nearly all the fairy tales and legends are tied to certain places in the landscape. Any human that narrowly escapes a giant wanting to eat him or a servant completing magical chores or whatever - you can GO where the story takes place.
