Arwen was barely there in the book version ... other than the Appendix ... and was just a minor background character. Maybe one or two speaking lines. That's what she would have seen herself as having been offered, when she got the part, if she had known the book version. Other than what's alluded to in the Appendix, everything else is a creation of the movie, not the book.

I just recently rewatched it and noticed that he was using it or a sword very similar to it. It also didn't look like it had an inscription on it. One of the lines during the banquet from balin to bilbo he mentioned that swords get names for deeds they've done, so if elrond did have hadhafang in the hobbit, uninscribed, maybe in the few short years between the hobbit and fellowship he could have given the sword to arwen and had the inscription added.

    • With good reason, IMHO. The energy spent in making both LOTR and The Hobbit RIGHT beyond reason continues to boggle my mind. The detail that is so subtle, so subliminal, just has not been done in cinema before - or since. Tolkien created multiple actual languages, and Peter Jackson's characters faithfully speak them. WETA Workshop created almost magical animatronic heads and creatures to speak them also. Klingon is fun, but not a match. All in all, the books were fun, but not as inspiring as the cinematic recreation. (And I am NOT a Tolkien buff. But I AM enamored of the six-film Extended Blu-Ray series, a tour de force of film-making.

      @thesoundsmith@thesoundsmith5 жыл бұрын
    • David Kempton The movies *made* me into a Tolkien buff lol. I agree, the books are a little...bland, but reading wikis for the lore is really interesting; there's actually a LOT of similarity between Tolkien's world creation mythology and Elder Scrolls'. Personally I'm enamored with the fact they used actual weapon and armorsmiths to make all the stuff

      @gangl1234@gangl12345 жыл бұрын
    • David Kempton That's what you get when a linguist starts writing stories - you get languages that live in a world, where the history of that world influences the languages. Only when that is sufficiently developed do the stories get written, using languages that actually work. Klingon was much more of a "let's put guttural sounds together into words and use English grammar" way of creating a language - its purpose was to sound alien, not to be an actual functional language.

Same goes for someone who doesn’t know the source material. They could not have the heart for the movie and are just in it for the pay check. (I believe that was one of the issues with The Last Airbender.) It falls on the Director to make everything come together and to get the best people for each role.
