I'm really happy that Tom Dumoulin is back, great to see someone find joy again in their profession
No, he didn’t. He had to, for his contract
I usually don't watch TT highlights. I'm glad I did this time. VERY entertaining, good job!
Apparently Luke Plapp crashed in the TT reconnaissance ride, and they couldn't get the bike ready/fixed in time for the race. It looks like Adam Yates has been working on his TT position over the winter, but I'm always surprised by the number of riders who don't do the work. Especially the riders who have terrible, or completely outdated positions, like the designated leaders of some of the lesser or weaker teams.
Maybe Plapp crashed because of his "updated" position!
@@AndrewBlucher or maybe he slipped over on the cobbled corner like some other rider did.
Yates has looks more like Dark Helmet from Spaceballs
He was hoping for ludicrous speed!
Jam the radar!
I was about to comment this!
@@ralr "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate." -Adam Yates
You are missing the point of Froome's opinion. It is about training. He feels that TT bikes are not safe to train on because training has to be done on open roads with cars and other things around. In a race, it is a closed course. Another point he made is that it would level the playing field as lower budget team can't afford the time in wind tunnels.
Except as can be seen with Plapp, riders still will take a position that isn't much if any safer compared to an ITT bike. Arguably it would just be better to improve ITT bike with the aspect of safety in mind, like brakes on the middle bars, a mirror or screen+camera to still have a view of the front when looking down, ... As for level playing field, I can maybe agree on that in the lower categories, but if you are a world tour team, this shouldn't be that much of an issue. Even if it is, just give riders that aren't GC or ITT candidates a regular bike and only have ITT/GC candidates in your team ride ITT bikes, probably would already relief a lot of pressure on logistics and mechanics as well as the number of needed ITT bikes in the entire team. Wind tunnels would still be used though, most use of wind tunnels by teams now is with regards to other equipment (like helmets, suites, ...) and position, I don't think the bike spends that much time in the wind tunnels, considering how aerodynamic it already is. Only the really well of teams might do that for marginal gains probably.
@@MDP1702 I pretty much agree with your points. I was just explaining Froome's position. I think I would personally miss it if they stopped using the TT bikes.
@@MDP1702 The UCI can just enforce the same position for road stages: body can only be supported by hands, feet and butt. In this case, Plapp's position would not be permitted
Spot on RE: Froome on his candid honestly It is about training, you cannot find clear roads to train on to race a TT later
@@MDP1702 sorry? it's not much safer? he's literally on the hoods just like you would usually ride a road bike... Actually it's safer because he's got 2 more contact points with the bars with his forearms and his upper body is much more stable and more locked down so the front wheel won't be easily swayed by the wind. I ride around in this exact position on my road bike almost 50% of the time with the other 35% being on the hoods and 15% on the drops.
still waiting for video on Quintana's video on tour de alpes martitimes
Yates and his “Spaceballs” helmet really surprised!
hahaha good one
He has mirrors in his helmet
@@veganaus makes sense
I'm so happy to witness the UAE tour stage 3 in person!! We are near at the cornering part of the route
I loved Yates in Spaceballs, as the Dark Helmet
Is it wrong that I picture in my head Adam Yates saying, "commence operation.... Vacu-suck"?
Enjoyed ALL the Spaceball references. I think it's my favorite part. I have been following this conversation since it began and I still have no real opinion. I can see both sides. Training safety seems to be key regardless of the bike. Great stuff. Thanks again!
Really nice highlights
Thanks for what you're doing!
As a South African it would have been great to hear your take on De Bod's performance seeing that he made the top 10. Great video as always though.
Canyon might have the best mechanics in the the world tour, what they have done to MVP on the itt of tdf and Phillipsen now is amazing
What was surprising though was the result of Adam Yates...not a time trial specialist at all!!!
Adam Yates went ludicrous speed
how is this not clearly the top comment LOL
I’m glad I read through the comments and someone else thought of it before I did, bravo!
And he didn't get last place either with the road bike, no deep/disc wheel, etc. His position looked pretty good too, may be catching some wind in his chest without his arms close together, but his head was pretty low. Solid effort, if there was data up from people around him to compare it'd be interesting.
Thank you....Peace
Super Content!!!
Is there a pattern where GC leaders over perform in time trials? I can think of Philipsen today, Gaudu in Algavre, MvdP in TDF, Alaphilippe in TDF, and for sure more examples
Well Philipsen isn't a GC leader, I think the motivation of such a good time is the points jersey, but what you say is in my opinion explainable by the fact that they have to lose the minimum time possible in order to stay in contention, and thus they'll not only outdo themselves in terms of power, but also positioning, a rider who is racing an ITT with no interest in said TT won't put themselves in too unconfortable positions to be more aero, while those who have interest and don't want to lose time will try to be as aero as possible even if it is painful or incomodating
The Yellow Jersey in July gives you superpowers. The prospect of losing it from a TT probably sounds offensive to the likes of Alaphilippe and MvdP. It doesn't hurt that those guys have tremendous 30min-1hr power.
"How could Pogacar recover (from COVID)?" The answer is always really well
Long COVID is a thing. It really affected Cam Newton and Lewis Hamilton for example

so what was the time difference on the tt bike vs road bike?
Ghanna size is just more aero drag than Bisse? Also EF uses a special tire rolling resistance scientist from Zipp wonder if we can get the equipment used

How fast can they go on a regular bike vs a TT bike?
"Now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb." Adam Yates, Spaceballs
Yates wrinkly skinsuit definitely a few seconds in that
Can anyone answer on the rules, if during a TT using a road bike riders could still use the now banned "puppy paws" position using forearms on the bars? Seems like Plapp wanted to do this at points but didnt.
Good question. I think even the UCI doesn't have a clue
He could have, as the rule bans the use of the forearms as a point of support "outside of time trials". Within a TT like this he could have.
Adam Yates us ready to fight the Bugs 😄
disc road bike at that, ugh brrrr, yeah xD

It’s actually crazy that there are still so many world tour athletes with aero positions so poor🤦🏼♂️
It’s been reported the inspiration of Adam Yates TT helmet is from Dark Helmet of Spaceballs.

A good day
Rules for position on a road would prevent the position Plapp used. Riders are only allowed to support themselves on the hands, feet and butt. Plapp was using his forearms to support himself. If TT bikes are banned, TT rules would likely change to match road stage rules, and Plapp's position would fall foul of the rules.
I think his position was fine. Looked like his hands were on the brake hoods.
@@geoffreyholmes5447 He used his forearms as point of support on the bike, which is not allowed in road stages. So no, on a road stage his position was not fine (if by that you mean allowed)
Position might be slightly different but the problem would be the same. Just have to look at the hood position the riders use today, their hands are on the top of the hoods, not the brakes.
Yates helmet is so big because he has mirrors inside his helmet. Mirrors help him keep his head slammed down while still being able to look forward.

Yates with a helmet straight from Space Balls.
I'd take Yates as leader. He deserves his chance.
why don't they run a disc front wheel?
Try it and get back to me with how it works out for you 😉
A disc front wheel cost Fignon the ’89 Tour. The problem is that the front wheel ends up catching every little bit of crosswind, and really screwing with the handling.
@@TheGotoGeek cheers, banned by the UCI too I just checked. The UCI do some daft stuff This less so but I was watching it thinking why not in such binary wind conditions!
@@huwsparky175303 well I clearly don't know, hence the question, whats with the redundant answer?

LORD HELMET from Spaceballs!
Helmet manufacturers are tacking the piss at this point, surely. Socks aren't allowed to exceed UCI parameters but you can wear an aerodynamic fairing on your head? Forget the TT bike debate (lol, more a storm in a teacup than a debate) helmets that encourage protracted intervals of dangerous blind riding, that are an aerodynamic element masquerading as a piece of safety equipment are far more worthy of attention. It makes more sense to keep TT bikes AND ban head fairings than vice versa.
Platt was on his road bike because he crashed his TT bike in the recon. Unlike an Ineos rider I know😂
Safety is a secondary thing to cost. TTing was a lot more popular in te US before time trial bikes became the norm. You'd just have your aero bars and clip them on, and you were good to go. Now everyone thinks if they don't have a $10k ITT rig why bother, and so TT participation dropped, and there's basically no TTs anymore. Best approach is just to set the rules for what's a legal bike, and that applies to all road races. Simple. Want TT bikes? No problem, but then it's okay in a crit as well as a TT. May the odds forever be in your favor! If aero head position on mass-start bikes is such an advantage then it's a problem already in mass-start racing, where breakaways are basically ITTs. If it is a safety issue then that's something which needs to be addressed for mass-start races anyway.
all one has to do to see how a TT would go on a road bike, just look at pre-aerobars 80s vids of TTS Adam 'Dark Helmet' Yates
Dark Helmet!
If Adam Yates can tap into the dark side of the force on Jebel Hafeet... watch out. Use your aggressive feelings boy.
It looks like Gana is riding a little kids bike haha

Sith Lord helmet!!!!!!!!
Meme time, guys. Yates at #buckethelmet??
Should have posted plapps time tho
Ganna going to the tour not the giro this year, no need for his form to be as good in previous years
Maybe they should add breaks to the ski’s. Make it a rule and problem solved. Also instead of UCI doing nothing and then dropping a bomb maybe make it a rule for next year. This would give time for makers to figure it out
I feel sorry for the one using rb
Sneaky Nelson Powless ,watch out for tomorrow and in GC
Plapp crashed in his warm up and damaged his TT bike
Thoughts on ineos abandoning the marginal gains approach? They have moved to bioracer kit which is clearly baggy and not as fast look as castelli. They had Yates running a 2x chain setup in the flatest fastest course possible? Theyve stopped trying to control races as they used to? Everything which made them successful seems to not be done anymore. No way 2015 sky would let riders use inferior kit like they are now
I'm pretty sure this is a statement for the rest of the field showing just the position and helmet I would imagine and the baggy skinsuit may like the press camouflage on cars, can throw it all at the wall for UAE
@@coreygolphenee9633 ?
Bioracer skinsuits are faster than castelli. Ganna is using a custom skinsuit with no texture and is using a custom textured baselayer
2x front is an absolutely minor aero penalty in the realm of 2-3 watts. To get full aero gains derailleur tab must be pulled off, costs a shitload of money for not alot of return.
@@willsitz4901 I would imagine its like press camouflage why would ineos show off the hottest newest trick shit if they don't have to
Banning TT bikes is a ridiculous idea. If you're not looking where you're going, you're going to crash eventually. Doesn't matter what kind of bike you're on, aero means head down, so unless you want to mandate a fixed position for people to ride in, it's always going to be dangerous finding your TT position
Why would a sprinter go hard on a tt? Team points?
Philipsen had many bonus seconds to play with. He had an outside chance to keep the GC leaders' jersey, that's why he went hard. And probably to test himself.
glad they have those disc brakes on those TT bikes. So aero,
I've been arguing against the use of TT bikes for several years now. There's absolutely no reason in the world for them to be used when everyone uses them. If some did and some didn't, then those who did would likely have an advantage on the typical TT course. But if everyone is gaining the same benefit, then why the ridiculousness of it all? I'd be far more interested in seeing what the top riders could do against each other on their regular road bikes. Who cares if someone is a TT specialist only when the conditions present themselves with a mostly-flat course and specially-designated bike? What does that have to do with the rest of the entire stage race? More often than not we see riders make fools of themselves on TT bikes, and there's been no shortage of disasters when it comes to Team Time Trials on TT bikes. I've yet to come across one good reason as to why TT bikes are even allowed. Thanks for the highlights, btw. Outstanding work!
Of course, LR knows about Sith lords, but not baby yoda. 🥴😜😂
💥 Gloves ☠️ Are Drag💥
To suggest that Plapp on a road bike is no safer than riding a modern TT bike shows a distinctive lack of experience on a TT bike. Maybe a road bike too.
What a big helmet you have. Lol.
I don't care about the position of the TT bike... I care more about parity. I don't want to see the guys on the best bikes get a huge advantage. I want everyone to be on more comparable equipment.
Gannas bike has pursuit track drops on basically and I would say not having a flat section to bail out to can feel sketchy
You can throw a blanket over the bikes, it's how you make your body interact with it that's the clever bit. If you can't be bothered to test kit/positions then you don't deserve any better.
Banning TT bikes would make sense from a cost-effectiveness standpoint, IMO. Factories spend hundreds of thousands on developing them. And unlike a road bike, they'll never sell enough of them to ever get back to anywhere near profit.
looks like back in the days, fuck tt bikes, leave them for triathlete
Nah. TT bikes are way more dangerous
Hope we ditch TT bikes.
