WHAT MAKES COILOVERS AWESOME - How it Works | SCIENCE GARAGE
This Science Garage hits the road to talk with Formula Drift driver, Odi Bakchis. Odi runs his own suspension company, and makes coilovers for all the sick cars that need them. He runs us through the ins and outs and ups and downs for performance suspension and coilovers. We talk about what makes one coilover better than another, and how to know you’re getting a suspension upgrade that does more than just look good!

So strange seeing Bart speaking instead of shouting everywhere.
Ikr? So relaxing to the ears.
@@Jarejander69 Strangely, i felt depressed...
@@EdAk333 yeah, I miss Ronald Lee Ermey too...
Very happy actually.... no need to be loud and obnoxious
@@EdAk333 when you watch old "up to speed" vids
I like how Bart is speaking quietly. He’s being taught something and it shows that he is taking all of the information in. He’s truly paying attention. Despite teaching us about cars a lot, he’s not ashamed to be the student here and there. You never stop learning. Even if he already knew every single thing, he still stayed humble.
I legit thought that was two barts in the beginning lol
Me too and might be many others too.
Yea me too i wasnt looking at the screen for the first 10 secs and when he said Odi’s name i looked up and replayed it lol
That's racist
Haha they look the same
lol same here! :D
Have we found bart's lost brother??
No that's Odi Buttcheecks
Bort.
Yes but still no sign of James' DAD ??
They look strangely similar
For a moment i thought it was just edited but no it was real 😅
Thx u
Just one has more body build than the other
It's actually Bart but stronker
QUIET BART IS PERHAPS TOO QUIET
finally sum 1 says it!
mohamad ambrose Bone apple tea!
It's kinda unsettling
Honestly, using graphics to demonstrate seems better. But I am still glad to see Bart working it out with his twin brother!!!
Somehow graphics explain better, even better than the real thing
I found myself missing the diagram style animations, they can be very helpful especially when the action being described occurs internally. But pretty good job of explaining. They must have adjusted Bart's meds again, his tone was more subdued than usual, or his manner was noticeably even-keeled.
I was thinking that throughout the whole video. not only am I a beginner at learning mechanics but english isn't even my first language. so basically the good old "draw it for me as you would for a little kid works better" XD couldn't really keep up with all the info so a visual representation is a lot more useful to me and other beginners. still I learned so much from science garage the past year :D this added to the mechanics in the driver's manual necessary for driving school and what I learned from experimenting with the tuning in Forza Horizon ( lmao I know ) are really starting to pay off. I've always loved cars but only on a visual level ( car models and manufacturers and such ). thanks to Donut Media and Forza I've finally started understanding and loving the "guts" of the cars too haha
@@DarkSignal59 I get what you are saying and can relate. playing racing sims helped grow my appreciation and understanding of the underlying physics and mechanical aspects of cars. I've been into cars since I was a toddler and the fascination continues!
U2 reference?
Never seen so much decent silence and concentration even myself. Very educational.
I swear, Science Garage makes some of the only videos here on KZhead that I can watch without having to fast forward/skip, like....my attention is grabbed throughout the vid. Great Job Donut!👌🏽🤙🏽😆
Most serious science garage ever!
I came out with more questions than answers after watching the video
Please keep doing videos like this, tons of KZhead channels do general stuff about car parts, but all this in detail stuff with a manufacturer was amazing
You guys should do an episode about the difference in controlling AWD RWD and F(ront)WD vehicles, the differences in handling and what conditions each would be suited for.
It just works
You're already here?
Damn
Hi Nappy new year
you've said this already months ago, something more original you fuck.
@@Omar-em7rl He is right tho, Coilovers just work XD.
Keeping your orfiaces properly oiled up when you're using them violently is super important guys ;P
@casey escobar indubitably
🤔🤨😑
@casey escobar for real I always suggest going over everything at least once a year if your going to go crazy with it, at the very least even if it doesn't need it, it helps you feel better knowing everything is at 100% and locked down so you're not going to be slowly losing bits and bobs over several different events and then worry about some crap getting free or having a catastrophic failure of a vital part

Sick Iron Maiden shirt 🤘🤘🤘
Up The Irons!
This is a great video that talks about many aspects of how a coilover damper works. Great job!
The most sciencey of science garages yet...
Got a set of Feal coilovers in 2016 for a track Miata and loved them. Thanks Odi
this is the most in depth I think Ive ever seen a coilover video go. great video.
So when I initially saw how this was going to be a “at location” episode and wouldn’t have as much goofy shit I was a little worried but hands down one my favorite episodes. Love how in-depth this was. Awesome as always
This is such an exceptional channel, always learning something new. 👍🏼
Odi = bart with eyeglasses
This was a great video to understand high end suspension components. I’ve always wanted to understand them. And, now I do. (:
One of my favourite episodes of Science Garage!
Oh boy here’s my chance to say something amazing to donut.
Nailed it bud
Love what you are doing with the channel. I have learned so much. Could you do an episode on pushrod vs overhead cam differences?
Love you guys so much xD I enjoy all these videos so much, I just love learning all about cars
Some of you guys obviously don’t know but odi is a formula drift legend
And he’s also a complete IDIOT and calls a strut mount a “upper control ARM”.
I was looking for info on these all weekend. I love you guys
great stuff! thanks for the detailed breakdown.
This was ace! I'm not even a car guy really, but this was fascinating! Loved it
this was a very helpful video thank you!
These are the kinds of videos we wanna see. Great video!
For the past few weeks you've been hitting subjects that my teacher is teaching in my class and this video is no exception.Thank You!!

Very informative video. Keep up the good work
you guys are awesome. I love the bits of comedy everywhere, all of the content you cover, and most importantly, that IRON MAIDEN shirt. hellz yea
This type of science garage is the best type of format.
Well explained, in depth 👍🏼

Best damn explanation of sprung weight suspension I've ever seen.
Thanks! Learnt something today!
this man should be a hero i love this show
I use coilovers for my opel astra G.. I am in Ghana where there a lot of bumps on our roads... I realized after changing to coilovers, performance has increased together with handling.. I love it.. Unfortunately it isn't readily available and quite expensive
awesome channel and I love the iron maiden tshirt too
Yall make the perfect videos that force me to click them
Very interesting stuff, reminded me of similar techniques used in F1 car i watched some long time ago.
Sick video guys!
Man if only we got more people in the industry for How It Works. Would really help bringing more info onto the table.
TJ Hunt need to watch this video, dude spends half his time fixing his bags
Facts 👌 I just don’t like bags 💼 just my opinion
Wow.....I guess he should
This is so sad that Science garage is gone this was my favourite show... now I'm stuck watching reruns to get by in life.
I think Jeremy and Zach Job does a great job to fill in Bart’s place but I do miss him and science garage
Science Garage is what got watching roughly about 4 years ago.
can you guys talk about lifting cars? love my hybrid sedan and ive already done a couple mods that make me want to keep the car rather than buying an suv. uh thank you. this episode was great btw. thanks for the work.
Love Donut. Love Science. Love Garage. Love Science Garage
i like how you can adjust ride height with the adjustment on the mounting body.
Fantastic information i need this in the dialect of OFFROADING coil overs like bilstien , fox, king, fabtec, icon, ect
Please do an episode on Long travel suspension
great work thanks!!
Awesome video!!!
This was b-e-a-utiful. Science Garage!
Awesome shirt Bart. Class.
i like this more "relaxed" episode instead of the screaming-all-over-the-place type of episodes. i enjoyed this video a lot.
Ok, now i know where to buy my coilovers when have my S14! :D
About time you made a video about coilovers.
Ok. Number of the Beast shirt you sir got some newfound respect XD .

Drift alone in the hills, with the wind in your grille.
Who needs coilovers when you can cut the springs on a Honda!? Sike! Get the real thing. Cut springs suck.
Here you are again
Nowadays i see more honda with coilovers than with stock suspension
Or u could weld the pieces of metal stock in between the springs like the 4x4ers do when the wanna suspension lift for their truck, that's really top notch work!!!, maybe??
Your telling me too bad coilovers don't exist for my car
Very good vid!
Wow, I didn't realize Odi was so smart wrt coilovers. Nice.
Budget Volvo slamming: Ratchet strap around both sides of the differential, mounted to the spare wheel well
Thats fucking stupid. But at the same time I'm kinda pissed I've never gotten to witness that.
Just call it suspension pre-loading.
Papa Bart so gentle and quiet. Seemingly Like i am right now focusing on understanding how Coil over works.
there should be that desk-explosion at 1:22 when he puts the coil up straight
I am going to check out Feal Suspension I'm in the market. I've never heard of them but I'm into quality of ride and handling, not flash.
MAN I NEED THIS SHOW BACK....:(
Something I've always pondered about - magnetic damping. I've seen videos of a neodymium magnet dropped through a copper tube, it goes very slowly because of eddy current resistance - a form of damping, with force proportional to speed. Could someone build a shock using this principle? Would be extremely simple, and no fluid to leak. Could get more adjustability by using an electromagnet so force can be adjusted very quickly, still very simple and with very cheap components. No sliding seals, just linear bearings (which would be fairly simple to replace) so it ought to last forever. Would want to put fins on the outside for cooling, but internal components would not get hot as the heat is generated by eddy currents in the outer tube.
i love bart so much
Love the shirt dude
*Who is this mellow-mouthed L7, and what has he done with the real Bart!?!* 😂😂😂
The value truly happens when you get into the second level ones. The lower level ones, are just to lower the car, and take your money. Aka, the $2000+ ones.
Who makes second level?
About to spend that kind of money on my NA Miata and we’ll see how big of a difference a ‘second level’ makes compared to my Eibach/Bilstein combo! I’m super excited. Will post a results video as well.

I actually really like Bart in this type of episode.
great vid!.... sooo does the car lower after adjusting preload?? oorrrrr?🤔
I wish they did a science garage on the active damping system on the SRT vehicles (Hellcat series, demon, yk, SRT)
Could you do a video on air suspension kits
I was so captivated by what Mr. Odi was saing, but that t-shirt with Iron Maden distracted me for the whole video. I want one!! or witn Manowar or Van Halen
