WHAT MAKES COILOVERS AWESOME - How it Works | SCIENCE GARAGE

This Science Garage hits the road to talk with Formula Drift driver, Odi Bakchis. Odi runs his own suspension company, and makes coilovers for all the sick cars that need them. He runs us through the ins and outs and ups and downs for performance suspension and coilovers. We talk about what makes one coilover better than another, and how to know you’re getting a suspension upgrade that does more than just look good!
Check out Feal Suspension:

Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

  • I like how Bart is speaking quietly. He’s being taught something and it shows that he is taking all of the information in. He’s truly paying attention. Despite teaching us about cars a lot, he’s not ashamed to be the student here and there. You never stop learning. Even if he already knew every single thing, he still stayed humble.

They must have adjusted Bart's meds again, his tone was more subdued than usual, or his manner was noticeably even-keeled.

    • I was thinking that throughout the whole video. not only am I a beginner at learning mechanics but english isn't even my first language. so basically the good old "draw it for me as you would for a little kid works better" XD couldn't really keep up with all the info so a visual representation is a lot more useful to me and other beginners. still I learned so much from science garage the past year :D this added to the mechanics in the driver's manual necessary for driving school and what I learned from experimenting with the tuning in Forza Horizon ( lmao I know ) are really starting to pay off. I've always loved cars but only on a visual level ( car models and manufacturers and such ). thanks to Donut Media and Forza I've finally started understanding and loving the "guts" of the cars too haha

  • Something I've always pondered about - magnetic damping. I've seen videos of a neodymium magnet dropped through a copper tube, it goes very slowly because of eddy current resistance - a form of damping, with force proportional to speed. Could someone build a shock using this principle? Would be extremely simple, and no fluid to leak. Could get more adjustability by using an electromagnet so force can be adjusted very quickly, still very simple and with very cheap components. No sliding seals, just linear bearings (which would be fairly simple to replace) so it ought to last forever. Would want to put fins on the outside for cooling, but internal components would not get hot as the heat is generated by eddy currents in the outer tube.
