Kentucky struggled to pull out a win vs Saint Joseph's and then lost to unranked Wilmington because of the same defensive issue - struggling to stay in front of the ball.
Coach Calipari talked about it in the post-game press conference, and this video breaks down the main issue plaguing their defense early in the year. Kentucky did give up several easy driving lanes in their 1v1 defense, but their main struggles came from their ballscreen defense.
This video explains why UNC-W was able to get downhill to the paint over and over because of how Kentucky guarding their pick & roll. Understanding what is the main cause of opponents getting paint touches is crucial when trying to make adjustments mid-game.

Thank you for sharing
Appreciate this brodie, learning a ton
You bet William. Thanks for tuning in! Glad it’s helping
as a uk fan this game hurt to watch, when you break it down it really shows how easy ball handlers are getting to the paint
This is why ballscreens are the most popular action in basketball right now. It takes multiple defenders being on the same page to keep the ball out of the paint. It’s also why UK was so good 10 years ago when they were switching 1-5 and their bigs like WCS could stay in front of point guards.
@@TheFilmRoom1 i remember watching him as a kid shame he didnt turn out to much in thr nba
Yea, the NBA is a unique league. Guys don’t always translate, and especially as a 5 man it’s hit or miss. These days, there’s a few rim protector/lob threats who make a career, but mostly guys have to learn to be perimeter threats (like the Lopez brothers & Al Horford) to stick around.
Awesome stuff..learning alot keep up
You bet! Thanks for the comment.
Would love to know your thoughts on the UK-Auburn game & the improvements between then and now
What is the 10-1-4 rule you keep bringing up in most Defense videos?
The 10.1.4 rule is the standard hand-checking rule that was instituted around 2012-13. It was to increase “freedom of movement” offensively and the reason so many fouls are called on dribble penetration in today’s game.
Yeah... The two hand rule
Always said this is a detail and communication problem. Because this team is full of athletes that should be able to discourage one on one drives.
Can’t disagree with ya. They’ve definitely gotten things figured out since then. It’ll be fun to see how they do in the tournament.
@@TheFilmRoom1 Yeah this is the most fun team to watch Cal has ever had. The fans adore the team's unselfishness, style of play and character. The fan base might go into depression with a first weekend exit. LoL
😂😂 hopefully it’s a great run regardless of where it ends. Rob is so fun to watch!
whats the beat
I’m not sure what you mean by “beat”.
@@TheFilmRoom1 the music in the background what's it called
you know ball
I appreciate it!
In today’s game… switch everything and make adjustments when you can. Everyone wants to shoot the long ball. I’d rather give up a tough contested two pointer than a three pointer.
There’s a lot of teams that subscribe to that method. Villanova has done that very effectively for a while now. Good observation.
You can pack line as well. Most kids ain’t shooting 40% from the 3 pt. There’s always a game within the game.
