Help defense -- which was once constrained in the NBA by the illegal defense rules -- has continued to evolve at the highest levels of basketball. This video starts with the 1998 NBA Finals and then looks at some of the more prominent defensive schemes since then: No-Middle defenses, Pack Line defenses, and Help-Only-When-Necessary defenses. Coaches include: Tom Thibodeau, Chris Beard, Dick Bennett, and more.

Man that illegal defense rule looks atrocious to look at now.
It was -always- wrong and everyone knew it
@@HobbesTamThanhwas also never fully enforced. Why do you think MJ is blatantly playing illegal defense if he knew hed be called for it?
Love how you incorporate direct advice from guys like Coach Nick and Coach Bennett and then you demonstrate those principles with perfect examples. Great work as always!
You always give away the opponents weakness and take away their strength... but that requires you to do your homework and then execute

Great stuff here, really cool how it showed multiple sites talking about the same concept to reinforce his point. Above & beyond!!
Such phenomenal content. Really appreciate the detail you put into these! Keep it up!
Love the video, shared with team, so comment is for detailed discussion. At 4:00 mark, the pick and roll was defended with drop coverage, and no help was needed by the corner 3 defender. One of the best help principles to use is to only commit to the help if it is actually needed. Secondly, when the ball handler got a pick on one side and ended up clearly on the right side, the same corner 3 defender was no longer the help (weak side help). You can see that the weak side help actual came over. So double whammy on the strong side corner 3 defender. I use the pack line because we don’t have a big so best to prevent any inside. And with the pack line, our principle is to just never leave the strong side corner 3 (only stunt).
Great breakdown! This makes me proud to be Red Raider alum! In an offensively driven game, we thrive by dominating defensively
Love it; appreciate the effort! I share your suff with my athletes and it really helps them see where I'm coming from as a coach
Very nice, informative breakdown for any coach looking to develop a proper defensive scheme.
Loved seeing all my favorite BBall content creators in one video! Great content as always
Keep going... I really like that you referenced other bb channels
best basketball channel on youtube 100%
Great breakdown, great content!
Love it, great videos every time.
As usual! Great content!!
Quality content. Shootout to those "can you hear me shaking my head" 😂
I play at a high level division two and i love these videos gives different perspectives of how to win games
What school you play at fam?
Great video. I've always being send baseline player/coach.
Great content!!!
I love seeing SDSU in these videos! Watching SDSU over the years has given me more respect for defense. In games where SDSU is blowing out the opponent I root for the opponent to score as little as possible more than the Aztecs to run up the score.
this is one fucking amazing channel, you really don't have enough subscribers for the kind of content you create
very good! Hope you make more vids
If you have time, I Would love to see you analyze Ayo Dosumnu, Luka Garza, and Cassius Winston's game. I love to hear others opinion. Go Illinois!
Help-the-helper, no excuses.
Find it funny people say modern players couldn't do well with 90s defenses even though certain defenses were banned back then
we are better now, zone and help defense belongs in the game
Yea but handchecking was allowed so it balanced out
Illegal defense was called very loosely back then. Don’t let this video fool you
The defense should be allowed to do whatever they want regarding positioning. Either the offense can make shots or not.
This is the way I have always viewed it (and I'm surprised I haven't heard many others voice this opinion) . You have formation strength and sideline; like football. If you have more players on one side, then you inherently have more of an opportunity to help since they are technically closer together. You also have the sideline which counts as a defense. What a true defense(of the future) should do, is for to the side with the most help defenders. This also includes the sideline when deciding. So to take a trivial example... 3v3 (in 2k) you should force to the help if both are on the same side. If not you force to sideline. Does anyone agree?
Would packline be good in hs basketball. Usually in hs they are not good shooters. Is it hard for kids to lean?
dope video
Florida st would deny one pass away while being in and extreme on the line up the line stance. Then they would guard the ball like a pack line would. U should break this down because u didn’t mention this type in ur video
Old heads complain about how the rules make offense easier today yet you literally couldn’t play help defense in their era 😐
how didn’t i know this
Which of the 3 styles has been best on average?
Great video, but can U break down this past years Florida st
Hey check out these videos. He broke down certain FSU games and talks about their videos kzhead.info/sun/p62EdMZoZGuohq8/bejne.html
Who's video is it at 10:16? Like who is the guy that is speaking?
Hey has anyone heard of the SWARM defense by Wayne Walters?
So scouting is important
Never help one pass away, the easiest play in basketball on offense, passing to someone who is wide open right next to you.
But would i rather let James Harden or Lebron James get to the rim for a floater, or help off a guy who is a 35% shooter? There’s no right answer
@@domination4892 that’s why there’s scouting reports, there is a right answer, just depends on the situation
@@WLyons9856 There is no right answer. Either give up 60% chance layups, or 35% threes. No matter what you do someone will be open. It just matters whether or not they will shoot well that night
There aren't enough RELIABLE Stretch-5/4 bigs to make 3-pointers. 😑😑😑 That would punish Texas Tech's style of defense.
damn man I’ve seen in you in pretty much every basketball video I’ve ever seen lol
I think you can help one pass away if you start in help
I swear google is spying on me
Video was off to a great start, then you involved coach Nick. Bye channel.
you forgot defensive 3 sec also
Would either the Pack Line or the No Middle defense work in the NBA?
Also, what's the difference between the modern defensive three-second violation & the 90's illegal defense rules?
Only bcuz of the mid range is not used
James harden would love this 😂😂😂
Pack line defense Aka "drain 3s on em all day"
The UVA/Texas Tech national title game was the highest-profile contrast of top level no-middle vs. top level Packline, and really both teams were effective at adjusting to the other side and scoring well. Elite well-run offenses beat the best defenses in general, and the best defenses are the ones that can adjust to take away what the other team does best to limit the damage. It is worth noting this year that Tony Bennett has softened the extent to which he plays packline and is more willing to give up the baseline.
That's because Jordan kept trying to help too much
90s defense was easier couldnt zone up on people
zone is better, hopefully zone gets popular again
Bring back those ILLEGAL DEFENSE RULES. 🤣🤣🤣 It held players accountable for being solid 1-on-1 perimeter defenders.
basketball is more strategic now, which is better imo
In today’s NBA most offensive players can get through their man defense. Either they are offensively more evolved or defense today is worst. Imo, I believe today’s players have better offensive skillsets
Personally I find today’s wide open game that incentivizes free-flowing offenses with lots of ball and player movement to be much more pleasing aesthetically. No 98’ Utah jazz spacing, grind it out iso ball for me 🤢
I hate it when a guy's posting up down low and goes one-on-one with four guys just standing around being spectators. Ball movement, from side to side, in and out, is the best kind of basketball.
@@eelcoblaauw6689 Lakers basketball with Anthony Davis in his favorite left mid-post ISO-BALL. 😑😑😑 Dennis Schroder feed the high post then clear-out to the opposite corner. 3 teammates forced to the weakside in a 3-Man triangles with no weakside Pindown Screen action at all. Never making the skip pass to the weakside wing. Low I.Q. basketball.
