Coach Nick gets on the court to demonstrate why helping one pass away is so devastating to a defense, as it gives up way too many wide open shots.

  • Coach Nick, another great informative video as always! I just want to say, thank you for answering our questions and replying back to comments. I think its fantastic that you take the time to actually interact with all your subscribers. Seldom do I see KZheadrs comment on their own videos, let alone answer questions from their subscribers! Please, don't ever stop doing this! Its one of the many reasons why I keep coming back for more. Thank you kindly, Sir.

  • Great video coach! Been following you for a while and it's awesome to see your channel grow so much. On a side note, do you think you can make videos on basic strategies? I regret not playing basketball much when I was younger and only became interested during college. I think my mechanics are now good but I don't know much about organized play...for example, breaking zone defense. A friend who played in HS told me something about high post/low post, in/out, (and being able to hit threes lol)

  • We didn't show the 5th player for simplicity sake - there's another rotation after that. Either way, the more passes you force the offense to throw, the more chance you have to contest the shot.

    • The rotation must be perfect(and fast is not for everyone) and maybe to risky coach.But you are right in your analysis but i prefer help(SMALL) and recover its a game ,one agaisnt one (is a conversation coach)

      @joaoseica9051@joaoseica905110 жыл бұрын
    • Nothing is perfect in this game, but if you drill this rotation correctly, in the long run, your defense will work as best as it can and give u the best chance to stop your opponents.

      @bballbreakdown@bballbreakdown10 жыл бұрын
  • coach. great video. another idea for a video that I haven't seen is the proper footwork to fight over a pick. so many NBA teams run pick and roll that fighting over a pick is such a key step in stopping penetration.

    @basketballfreak24@basketballfreak2410 жыл бұрын
  • It's a dangerous cross court pass - the player that sinks and fills, if he's alert, can steal it or knock it away. Much better than letting the offense have the simple pass for the 3.

  • Thanks for crearing that up, freeking wish I had you as a coach back in HS

    @23Nuwanda@23Nuwanda10 жыл бұрын
  • No, since he can't be one pass away if he's on the weakside. To be one pass away, you have to be on the strong side. I just realized, I didn't quite explain eactly what 1 pass away, 2 pass away, 3 pass away means... hmmm...

  • I like these videos the best, kinda like an intro to basic basketball principles. I would love to see a similar video that deals with rebounding. What makes a great rebounder, what makes a great rebounding team? Defensive rebounds get you the ball, Offensive get you extra shots. Mayhaps in the future? :)

    @pinup23@pinup2310 жыл бұрын
  • Yeah - but there's also a fifth guy out there (that we didn't show for simplicity sake) that would also rotate. If you consistently make the offense make that many extra passes, you'll be in good shape.

  • what if the ball handler does not stop when the defender jabs? since the player is not completely closing out on the ball handler then why not drive as if he was not there? help will likely come from weak side but then you have passing option to the short corner(usually a post player) or to the wing depending on where the help comes from.

    @chitownmo@chitownmo10 жыл бұрын
  • Coach what do you think NYK should have done instead of Melo helping? I don't know why or how the Celtics got Bass posted up on Felton. Should they have had Kenyon try to help of KG and try to block of a pass to Garnett at the same time (double team). I know Felton is pretty big (and by big I mean heavy) for a guard but still. that's 6'9'', 250 pound Bass on 6-1 190-something Felton.

  • Helping one pass away is my pet peeve too Coach. My knicks do this all the time, and its why there 3pt defense is so bad. They rank 30th in opponents' 3 point shooting, constantly u see the knicks leaving players open for 3.

    @funtactics18@funtactics1810 жыл бұрын
  • One of them was in high school, the other (who hit the 3) just graduated - the others are in their 20s...

    @bballbreakdown@bballbreakdown10 жыл бұрын
  • The reason why NBA teams do this is because the're taught to build a wall and protect the paint, force the ball away from the basket so teams rather give up a three than a open lane to drive towards the rim in which i can see the logic in that becuz 3pt shooting is the most inconsistent part of the game.I think players can be a little overzealous and over help which gets them in trouble a lot of time but Coach Nick demonstrated the perfect way to defend this situation GOOD VIDEO!

    @Hannable28@Hannable2810 жыл бұрын
  • SURELY THIS IS JUST COMMON SENSE FOR ANY NBA PLAYER OR COACH! Coach are there any nba coaches that don't agree with this philosophy? what do they preach instead? a video on the options would be interesting

    @coddaam@coddaam10 жыл бұрын
  • Yes Coach!! The Basics will get you far. Knicks on the other hand don't trust Chandler as a weakside shot blocker because he is to inconsistent on help outs. Kenyon is more of a superb weakside blocker but at 6'9" being on the decline athletic wise.. He can't keep it up against most 7 footers who need to be contested all game..

  • awesome video, coach. then what should the nba team do when they face an explosive driver like Russell Westbrook, or very good shooter like Stephen Curry?? If the defender just jab step away from Stephen Curry, he is going to knock down every shot he looks at.

Do you think you would be able to beat them? I'm assuming it would just come down to which team runs the best plays, has the best strategy, do you think you would be able to beat them and outcoach frank vogel?
