Detailed Breakdown of Pack Line Defense

Pack Line defense has been a popular philosophy since the 90s. Virginia's Head Coach Tony Bennett took this defense from his father, Dick Bennett, who had a lot of success at Wisconsin-Green Bay.
This breakdown is broken up into two parts. Part 1 focuses on the foundations of this defense. 1. What the Pack Line is, and 2. Why it's structured to force ball-handlers to the middle of the court.
The Pack Line is an imaginary 16ft line (similar to the 3pt line) that every off-ball defender should be inside, or on, at all times. The on-ball defender is tasked with applying ball pressure to his match-up to influence dribble penetration. When done correctly, this defense forces a lot of drives into traffic that result in poor shots and turnovers.
In part 2, I'll breakdown Virginia's ballscreen coverage, and the 4th component of Pack Line which is post defense. Virginia primarily hard hedges ballscreens, which allowed them to maintain their aggressiveness. When the ball goes into the post, they "post fire" or double team to continue the theme of aggressiveness. Here's the link to part 2 [ • Ballscreen Coverage & ... ]

  • Thanks a lot coach ❤ How can we attack this defense " pack line defense" Your details are awesome 💯

    • I appreciate it! I think the drive & kick 3 is where this defense is most vulnerable, so you need to have guys on the wing who can shoot. The other area is baseline & slot drives. There’s much less help when you attack baseline. Hope this helps

  • Thank you coach for breaking that down. I’ve thought about using this defense against a team we play that doesn’t have great shooters, but does have some strong players that can drive to the basket. The other weakness I see is defensive rebounding since this reminds me more of a zone than man to man defense. Any suggestions to counter that coach? Thank you!

    • Appreciate the comment and hope this is something that can help you against that team. I think it’s a great strategy for teams like that. As far as boxing out & rebounding - I would really empathize AND practice going and hitting when the shot goes up. I think the temptation when you’re sagged off your man in help, and the ball goes up, is to turn and run to the rim. It’s critical that your guys look to go meet the offensive rebounders outside the paint and then pursue the rebound. Hope that helps!

  • Possession on 7:14 couldn’t you drill your defenders to execute a peel switch there. Obviously don’t want to depend on it but if you use the stunt & hold method, then have the POA defender peel off corner I feel like you’re in decent shape. Obviously much easier said than done at game speed.

    • Yes you could definitely implement that there.

  • This video was kept simple, and I am a follower because most are simple. Some vids however are a bit confusing for students of the game such as myself. Try to always make your verbal explanations as simple(straight-to-the-point) as possible. Yes we are going into detail to learn, but allow the learning be easy to understand.😉

  • I think traditional pack line- force middke and hard hedging/tagging ball screens is on the way out. You allow too many 3's. That is why UVA has gotten upset so much in March.

  • Dick Bennett and Pack Line is one of the worst things to happen to college basketball. One of the reasons I have Disdain for Wisconsin. Ugly, slow, drag you through the mud, 1920's stuff
