I cured my thumb shifting problem (mildly painfully)

I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF PEOPLE LAUGHING AT ME, IT'S TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE.
In this Mumbo Jumbo Minecraft video, I chain my hand to my desk to prevent myself from pressing shift with my thumb. After being voted 2nd weirdest Hermit on the Hermitcraft server behind Ethoslab, I have decided to cure my thumb shifting problem. Can 2 hours of playing with my hands tied up change a lifetime of thumb shifting? Let's find out.

  • Turns out your index finger is your pointer finger, and your middle finger is... well, just your middle finger. Also my keyboard is full sized, my hands are just big - I've only had this keyboard for 6 months and I can promise you I have done my weird hand placements on every keyboard I've owned! Mechanical, laptop, fisher price, you name it my thumb is shifting on it.

What IS weird thou, and what he probably meant, is that he never got motion sickness... and THEN started doing so because he changed how he clicks the keys. Getting sick because of an underliying association in the brain between the fingers movements and the expected screen movement as a result. If everytime you tried to walk (in game or in real life) forward, you moved to the left... yeah, that's where the motion sickness seems to be comming from.

  • Hey, Mumbo, fellow thumb shifter here. I've been trying to get out of thumb shifting for a while, and I'm part of the way there, but sometimes I just go back to thumb shifting. I think the reason for this is that ctrl is uncomfortable for your pinky to press, so you train your thumb to press keys in the shift/ctrl area instead. This ziptie thing has to be one of the best gaming ideas I've ever seen, but my advice is if you really want to change your habits, change sprinting from ctrl to something like caps lock like Gem has it. I have it set to z, which is better than ctrl, but I'm going to change it to caps lock, too.

    • Well, I press W and S with my middle finger, D with my pointer/index finger, and A with my ring finger, so there's that. I got it from when I used to play a game called Tanki Online, and I would move the tank using the arrow keys with the same 3-finger deal with my right hand, which made it very easy to turn and go forward/backward at the same time, and with my left hand I would have my pinkie on Z to turn the turret left, my ring finger on X to turn the turret right, my middle finger on C to bring the turret to center, and my pointer/index finger on the spacebar to fire the gun, not even touching the mouse, and you didn't have to aim the gun up or down, it just kinda fired up or down within a certain window automatically. When I started playing other games, I did the same 3-finger control with my left hand on WASD. It's a bit weird, but at least I have a reasonable and understandable explanation for where it came from, unlike Mumbo.

  • this video has caused me more laughter, so I don't think that problem is being solved, but I also completely understand where you are coming from. I have on multiple occasions had to consciously fix things I've instinctually done wrong, from SWALLOWING to holding a pencil and holding a fork (twice), to many more things after them going from inconsequential to genuinely causing me problems (cannot swallow pills and air and bloating from consuming liquids, but also bruises on my ring finger and thumb joint from holding pencils weird, etc., I literally cannot think of the other ones right now, but I know I've had more cases) It's always odd and painful, having to relearn and adjust, but it usually comes with benefits after what was, for me, usually a consistent month of retraining my brain. One issue I don't think I've fixed yet is my typing, though. It feels clunky and like I'm doing something wrong, but I cannot figure out what. I guess I'll keep on making typos. _-o-_ anyways I very much enjoyed you discovering all of your other quirks which were not considered in the ranking :)

  • People did this with factories back in the day. In order to prevent workers from crushing their hands in machinery they would have ropes attached to the wrists and pull back their hands when the machine activates. They are called “press pullback” if you want to look it up. We found out that all you need to do is require the operator to punch two buttons with both hands to prevent them crushing their hands rather than physically pulling back the hands.

    • Lol, this is actually still a thing. They're used in sheet metal manufacturing when the operator has to hold a piece at the same time they operate the press. I also work in the powdered metal industry and all the operators have figured out how to press both buttons with one arm (hand and elbow)

    • Yup still in use for when you are working around punch presses that have pinch points. Trust me after watching a de-gloving video or two you don’t forget the straps lol. I used to work in a metal forming and parts fabrication factory and as annoying as those straps are they keep your digits intact. It’s really easy to become complacent when doing monotonous tasks around heavy machinery.

    @dave-odavingson6311@dave-odavingson6311Ай бұрын
    • Not withdrawal: having to consciously keep on top of your mechanical behaviors constantly is a great deal of additional load on your brain. Walking (for example) is natural and automatic for a lot of people, but if you had a stroke and had to learn again, keeping up the focus to move your body in the right ways drains you a ton even if your muscles haven't atrophied very much at all

    • It's muscle memory. When I had switched from a bicycle with a foot-brake (pedal backwards to brake) to one with a hand brake, but then had to use my old bike for a photoshoot, I kept finding myself reaching for a lever that wasn't there whenever I wanted to stop. Luckily I was riding slow enough that I never needed to stop quickly. Was I "addicted" to using the newer bike's hand brake? No.

Therapy seeks to heal and help the patient, torture is the literal opposite, it's to inflict pain and injury to someone until they give up! Therapy is to help someone change negative convictions that keep them down, torture is mentally and physically breaking them down until they betray their conviction and gove the torture what they want for it to stop. Therapy requires the patient's willing participation in order to work while torture is literally a means to break the victims will! If you think therapy was comparable to torture you either don't know the first thing about therapy, have a terrible therapist or have been forced into a treatment called "conversion therapy", which actually is abuse/torture, not therapy.

  • Here's a little bit of a [tryhard] control scheme for minecraft, I found it perfect for me, but it might take some getting used to 1. movement isn't wasd but asctually esdf 2. instead of using 1234567890 for slots, you can use wqaztgvc. Also your inventory is r 3. jumping is mouse 5 4. throwing objects is 2 and f5 is now 1 5. chat is now ; or ' whatever you want It's based on the setup i've used for fps games [spicifically tf2] where switching between primary secondary and melee is important. And now playing minecraft is just, super easy, you can always instantly shift to any item and so on.
