In this video I demonstrate how to make an item that I have sold HUNDREDS of over the years. This simple an inexpensive to make project funded nearly all of my shop tools when I started out. This video is being published to help people who want to earn money to fund their hobby the same way I did 25 years ago. I hope you enjoy and benefit from this, thanks for watching!
LOVE the music especially when accompanying your smooth turning. Great video. Thanks
Thank you! Big divide on viewers over music or lathe sounds. I appreciate you watching!
Can you show the specs / size / make of your lathe. Interested in buying something like yours.
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman )p
Hey, the lathe I have is not made any longer. The spec on it are 2HP, reversible, electronic variable speed. 20” swing. Thanks for watching!
I had to try these today. They were tons of fun!!! Thank you for the idea!
Hi! They are fun for the first few thousand! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!
A "woodturning addiction" sounds like something great to have! 👍
It is one of the better addictions for sure! Gets expensive the further done the rabbit hole you go! Thanks for watching!
Nice camera work - good lighting 😊👍
Thank you Paul, I appreciate you watching!

Gracias!
Wet wood. Such a pleasure to turn! Nice video! Thanks!
It sure is! Thanks for watching!
I made something very similar for my fiancé recently, and it feels really good to know I am not the only one with this idea and people have found great success with it.
They are a great, easy item for sure. Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed your tutorial. You demonstrated that you are touching the piece of wood with an angels kiss, as you begin each turning.
Haha thanks Robbie! I appreciate it!
After watching this video, I got excited and turned out about 6 just before Mother's Day. I put pictures on FB, sold all six the next day. Oh, my daughter is in charge of the flower arranging. She's good at that. I might have to cut her in for a percentage. Ha
That is excellent! Glad to hear! Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman The vases I mentioned were wild cherry. They were green. Like just cut an hour before green and it's Spring time. Something I'm gonna have to think about in the future. In the Spring, the sap rises. So the blocks were saturated as much they they could be. I actually had rooster tails of water flying off the lathe. I also noticed larger than expected cracks after they dried some. So my plan from now on is to let the blocks sit a few weeks to dry out some. Thanks again for your videos. Now on to your rolling pin video.
Ok I didn't get it at first and kinda thought it was dumb till you showed off your collection now I want some
I’ve sold a LOT of these over the years. Thank you for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman Thanks for making inspiring content I watching your Christmas one now
The music along with the lathing was so relaxing…might just use this video to fall asleep each night😂. Loved it for the woodwork too👍🏻
You aren’t the first to say that! Haha thank you for watching!
Wonderful, the variety of shapes and sizes is very appealing. Thanks for sharing. I enjoy watching you turn. I learn by seeing it done. Thanks again. Roger D.
Thanks for watching Roger, I appreciate it!
My wife watched the video with me.....now I'll be turning bottlebrush vases the weekend...😶 Excellent video!
Thanks Jano, that sounds like an ok weekend to me! Thanks for watching!
Long time , Had an not so great lathe sat in the shed , only now finding time to see what it /I can produce , thanks so much for showing what can be done. the best teacher is listened to as well as watched , thanks again ,
Have fun! Thank you for watching!

Thank you Sahane!
These are beautiful!
Thank you Steve! I appreciate it!
I'm considering making these for the table settings for my daughter's wedding this summer. Thank you for a great idea.
We have used them that way often at different functions. Hope the wedding goes great! Thanks for watching.
OMG! This video is so therapeutic that I'm sitting here falling asleep. Not from boredom at all. It's amazing I'm loving it. Just one more thing I would love to try to do. Such a beautiful way to incorporate nature into our lives. God bless you
Thank you Nancy, I try to go with a relaxing vibe....people need that I think. Thank you for watching!
Same here
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman you're quite welcome. Thank you for posting
I watched this for the first time. Gotta say, it's probably the best small wood lathe craft product I have seen. And yes, I could quite easily see a market for these. Thank you for taking the time to show. I have now subscribed to your channel. 🇬🇧
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Looks as though the large flat tops would make them great as candle stands. Love them!
Thanks Teri. You would want to be careful as candle stands
Wanna know the best part of this bowl? You took the time to help more than one person wanting to do this!!!! Lewis, thank you very much. You're the kinda turner I like. Someone made a nasty comment on a new turners video. I had my say about that.
Thanks Vickie, I appreciate it!
Great project ideas.
Thank you Edward!
Thank you. I really like that you did it in real time. So many more ideas for my shop. Cheers
Thank you Kirk, I appreciate you watching!
Man o man! These are PERFECT for me to turn since my "shop" is at our permanent campsite! I think people will love them and I can get $5-10 each for them! Thanks dude!!!!
Excellent! Thanks for watching Rick!
I absolutely nailed this at school. Never bought a piece of wood. Always worked my way through the scrap wood to get ideas and I got awesome marks. Brings back a lot of good memories. Love it 🙏
Excellent Nigel! I appreciate you watching!
Funny u said the 2nd one is apple and the vase has the shape of a half eaten apple. Love it
I thought it but didn’t say it! Thanks!
very nice at first i thought it was going to be a brandy goblet
Thanks Roy, I appreciate it!
felicitaciones ....un magnifico trabajo que pondremos en practica........mil gracias
Thanks!
You turned some nice shaped vessels. I will warn you about cutting logs on the bandsaw, if no one else had. I had a log catch, spun on me, and I ended up in the er to stich up my pinkie fingers. Now I hol with a clamp. Only mentioning it because I would hate for anyone to get hurt from it.
Thanks Joseph, as you heard in the video I warned people as well. I’ve been at it for over 25 years without incident as I am very careful, hands on the ends away from blade and slow cuts. Thanks for watching.
Thank you sir, wonderful job.
Thank you, I appreciate you watching!
Lewis Great product, you turn like a machine , really clean. When I turn it looks like Harry the Beaver has been having a chew at them. Keep up the GOOD work 👍👍👍👍
Haha, thanks Douglas, I really appreciate it!
I wish I could get to the beaver stage, would be an improvement for me..
Just a matter of time Jack! Thanks for watching!
Amazing, you truly are
You are too kind Jim, thanks for watching!
Ok, if your not going to say it, I will......to JimG.......thanks, Yoda!
Simple, easy to make and as you say readily saleable, and easy for beginners using minimal equipment and no finishes. I have a wide range of great Tasmanian hardwoods growing, dead and dying, s vast supply to choose from in any size. Thank you for sharing your expertise & ideas, certainly tops on my starting in wood turning. Spent 50 odd years using metal machine lathes etc, so that part is already well learnt. Greetings from Tasmania, ‘down under’ 👍😁🇦🇺🦘
That’s excellent. I’m sure you will enjoy making these. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the good ideas
I appreciate you watching Edward!
Thank you for the nice video.👍
Thank you for watching!
Beaitiful piece of art.friend
Thank you!
Ah thats a cracking video and gives me great ideas thank you very much
Thank you Ciaran, I appreciate it!
Great starter idea! Thanks
Thank you for watching!
Another great video! You offer a wealth of information that makes this beginner along with countless others the opportunity to become successful. Thank you!
I appreciate it Wayne. Thanks for watching!
Very well done!
Thanks so much!
Thank you very much for the inspirational video on wood turning. I just recently upgraded to a nicer lathe and I am looking forward to making some things on it. Your video has given me some great ideas. You are a true craftsman and I appreciate your taking the time to show how you make these beautiful pieces of art. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you Rudy, I appreciate you watching!
What kind of a lathe was your first lathe ?
Forstner bits are the Jekyll and Hyde of the tool box! ;-) Awesome..and can be awesomely dangerous!
Yes they can be dangerous! Thank you for watching!
Immer gut, ein Handwerkerwerk zu sehen
Danke fürs Zuschauen
Just getting started in turning. This was helpful. Nicely done.
Excellent! Turning is great fun, enjoy. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for a great idea!!
Thank you for watching Ron!
I have made something similar but more of a novelty that sells well. Making almost the same shape, except I try to find wood with a feature in the center like a knot stub, (I use a lot of driftwood) , I round it down to the spur, take it off and cut it on the bandsaw, cut fish mouth into the spur end so it is gone, cut gills into side and cut your base into a tail. Drill couple of eyes, use beads. Drill hole in bottom to put in metal rod for display to use as yard art or driftwood base as art in your house. No two are ever the same. Fun to make and fast, no finish required.
That sounds really cool John! Shoot me a picture of one of you don’t mind. klondikecraftsman@hotmail.com Thanks for watching!
Id like to see that as well👍
Thank you for this video. I am recently retired and have been looking for something just like this. I love turning bowls so I am hoping those would sell as well. Great job!
You are welcome! I appreciate you watching!
I love watching your videos. You are an inspiration, I think hearing the lathe running as you work is so much better than the music. When I work I don’t listen to music. It’s almost like being put on hold and having to listen to the music being played while you wait.
Thank you, that is very kind of you to say! The audience is 50/50 on music or lathe noise. I’ve decided when it it regular speed to keep the lathe noice but when sped up on large projects like hybrids I use music as the noise is shrill. Thanks for watching!
I agree that the sound of the lathe is better than music to my ears. Music puts me asleep. This was a delightful project otherwise.
Good idea! I have a young friend that I think will be able to make these pieces to sell in our local community art show.
Mission accomplished! Thank you Vernon, I appreciate you watching!
Beautyfully done these flower pots It was not my job But i like wood working You done very nicely
Thank you!
have watched this again very nice piece's and a great display
Thank you Roy!
Great idea.... love the product displays at the also. Thanks
Thank you, I appreciate you watching!
After reading all the comments. I finally found an answer to a question that I've had for a long time. Thanks for that. Great idea btw.
Thanks! I hope the answer was correct! Thank you for watching
Lol. It had to do with the way to think about pricing.
Great ideas and helpful demo. Thanks for the time.
Thanks so much for watching!
Smooth cutting. Those tools are nicely sharpened. Well done.
Thank you, I use an 8” low rpm grinder, 280 grit CBN wheel and wolverine jig. Nothing fancy. I appreciate you watching, thanks.
Did my first one today, well pleased, thanks for the vid.
Excellent Derrick, I appreciate you watching!
Those are a brilliant idea Lewis. I have been a subscriber now for about a year and just wanted to thankyou for the guidence and ideas you share with us all. Cheers Denis
Thanks Denis! I’ve made hundreds and hundreds of them. I appreciate you watching!
This is the second time I have watched this and it is probably the best instructional video Of the many I have watched. As it is pretty cold here in NW Wisconsin I am going to turn on the heater in my garage workshop Saturday and try one of these on the maiden voyage of my lathe. Thanks!
Excellent Francis, have fun! Thanks for watching!
Having retired from my furniture business I was looking for for something to replace my previous daily routine.I have had a lathe for sometime but hardly ever used it.Watching your creative wood turning ideas has inspired me to take advantage of my country location in the Cotswolds where there is an abundance of garden centres and and market places. Thanks for your very useful You Tube demonstrations .
That is great Brian! Nice to have outlets to sell at! I appreciate you watching!
Nice to look.
Thank you Nathon
Thanks for this video. It's so good to watch in real time! I've learnt a lot from this. 👍
Thanks Joseph I appreciate that!
That's been really interesting. Thank you for sharing. And it's been good to see real time turning. They are what we used to call bread and butter pieces when we did the show and craft fair rounds. The artistic pieces were the cherry on the cake!! Thank you
Thank you Brenda, we always found the same thing. I appreciate you watching!
I have started woodwork as well now.I do a bit of woodturning too.Like you I am starting with some old tools. This is a very good idea to get some funding for shop refurbishment. Thank you very much.
Thanks Jose, I started over 25 years ago but am making this series to help people get going. Thank you for watching!
Just found your channel and appreciate the simplistic approach where you show beginners what they can do with the tools on hand. I'm in a bit different boat. I'm new and I'm 'tool rich, but skill poor' so I've been going back to trying to use the simple tools to get a good foundation as I am all self (and internet) taught. Your vids are great learning aids for me.... Thanks!
Excellent! I hope you can get something helpful on the channel. I appreciate you watching!
WOW those were beautiful and made fast. weldone.
Thank you Manjit
Great stuff Lewis! I have actually never turned a bud vase but after this I'll definitely give it ago for whenever I go to my first craft show.
Thanks Hodge, they move well! Let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching buddy
Thankyou. Very Clever. diana
Thank you Diana, I appreciate it!
Thank you for your great teaching abilities. I recently bought a lathe but a bit intimidated on bowl making. These vases are perfect to build my confidence.
Thanks Jim! These are great practice for sure!
Interesting twist, using a bowl gouge to form external contour. I felt myself relax when you brought us into your house to see the finished, saleable product. I want one / I want to make one immediately. Thank you for this!
Thank you Todd, love to see one when you make it! Thank you for watching!
i love this. im just starting out in turning and this helps give me ideas. thank you for doing this
Thank you James, I appreciate it
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman one more question what is the bit called you used i keep forgetting what they are
It is called a forsner bit.
I’m just starting out with my lathe. I’m trying to make some money with it and you have TOTALLY helped me. I lost my job because in to old and my health isn’t that great ,so the boss canned me. Again thank you ,
Thanks Rick, I hope everything works out well bud! Thanks for watching!
What a nifty idea. I need something that I can turn out quickly to support my addiction. Thanks.
Thank you Suzette, that was the plan when I made the video! Thanks for watching!
Nice job...I have passed over these pieces of wood in the past...not any more... Thanks, stay warm..
Thanks Martin, it is chilly today but as far as Canadian winters go this one has been mil so far. Thank you for watching!
Thank you very much for this idea, I have a bunch of cherry branches and ash branches that will be great for this. Can't wait to see more of your videos! Thank you
Thank you Lori, I appreciate you watching!
I like the rustic natural look
So do I Bill! Thanks for watching!
As soon as I signed on there was a knock at the door, so I had to watch the replay. I just got a few chunks of silver birch and I think I'll be making one of these. Enjoyed as always, Dave.
Thanks Dave! Birch works just fine! I appreciate you watching!
Agree everything you said is true about turning being addictive, expensive and difficult to make any respectful money at is so true. These quick and dirty green lumber pieces are sure to spike any novices enthusiasm and bring in few dollars at a craft event the downside is as you showed they'll crack, split warp and the bark will fall off in a short period of time so as long as everyone fully understands that life is good.
Thanks Michael, I’ve not had a problem with bark coming off regardless of how wet they were when I turned them. Thanks for watching
Good job, good video, good background music friggin finally. Thank you Sir.
Thank you Robert, I appreciate it!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman I’ve always wondered if KZhead suggests the horribly ear piercing stinking background music to their constituents that publish their beliefs and dreams here on KZhead. It’s just hard to believe that 99.9999% of the folks that share their lives and works with us could all be that damn ignorant. However yours was actually easy on the ears, again, good job and thanks.
Thank you Robert, I want it to be relaxing. I appreciate the feedback!
Those are really great Bud👍
Thank you Steve, I appreciate it!
Appreciate your videos, been turning seriously for last 10 years and always like seeing other turners work. Great flower vases, I like using Norfolk Island Pine for vases and bowls.
Thank you John, I appreciate you watching! I’ve not turned Norfolk yet but have seen some nice pieces made from it.
Subscribed, love the vases. I'm going to give it a go
Thanks Sue, welcome!
Just turned out a similar lot for Christmas gifts and one just this past weekend as a gift... I appreciate this video as it gave me some confidence to my direction
Nice, people love them! Thanks for watching, I appreciate it
Hi Lewis. Finished a plum log in this style yesterday so thanks for the inspiration.
That is awesome Clive! Fruit wood will crack a lot if it isnt dry but it is certainly awesome to turn and looks great. Would love to see it if you want to email. klondikecraftsman@hotmail.com Thanks for watching!
that is e great tip..... lets hope craftshows will start up real soon. Good luck.
Thank you Peter, lets hope EVERYTHING starts up real soon! Thank you so much for watching!
Good stuff. Nice approach.
Thank you Graham, I appreciate it!
Lovely pieces and really enjoyed you explaining things as you went along. Very useful. Thanks so much. Now subscribed!
Thank you Mandy and welcome! I appreciate it!
Good quick projects!
Thanks Valerie!
Thanks for this. They look superb, I've been given some apple and holly wood branches so definitely going to give them a whirl.
Thanks Paul, watch the apple if it is very wet as it will crack MUCH more than other woods. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing, neat project and I enjoyed the video. Keep well, Rob
Thanks Rob, I appreciate it!
Love these rustic vases. I have a lathe left by me ex, but it is huge. No tools yet but thank you so much for sharing this information with me. Now I know how to get started. ❤🙃
That is excellent! You really cannot have a lathe be too big. You can turn pens on a big lathe but not heavy burls on a small one! Love to see how you make out. Feel free to email if I can help. klondikecraftsman@hotmail.com
I really appreciate the explanations and how to.
You are welcome, thanks for watching Kim
Love the music, very educational. Thank you
Thank you Adam
Thanks for the info they all look great keep turning stay safe👍👍👍👍
Thanks Radar, I appreciate it
That's great. I was trying to figure out what to add to my list of sale items at our fall festival and spring fair. Thanks
Thanks Steven, these move really well. I hope you have great luck with them! Let me know how they go. Thank you for watching!
Good job!
Thank you
Great video, Lewis! I will definitely make some!
Thank you Clayton! Hop it goes well for you! Thanks for watching!
"You’re not building a piano here!" Pretty funny. Maybe a clue to your next video? Very satisfying to watch this video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Priceless.
That was an expression a friend used to say, it just comes out sometimes! Thank for watching, I really appreciate it! oh...no piano building in the next video! haha
"We ain't building' no damn pianer here" is what my boss used to say.
What RPM are you using for the vase?
Would you please talk about how you sharpen your lathe tools?
Your work is amazing
Thank you Lori! I appreciate it!
Beautiful 🤗,thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Thank you for sharing, and thank you for the relaxing music when your turning. I am recently retired and thinking about a lathe.
Thank you Jeff, you should absolutely get a lathe! I appreciate you watching!
